New Music Thursdays on The Aftershock

March 6, 2008

My American Heart – The Shake (Awful Feeling) **** (Album:  Hiding Inside The Horrible Weather)

Review:  There is one interesting thing about this band…and that is, they are all FREAKIN’ YOUNG!!!  All 4 members of the band are 20...I kid you not.  I mean, they are all young and they’re breaking into the music industry very heavily and they can’t even drink legally yet!  Weird!  Anyways…for M.A.H., their new single “The Shake” is a good debut for them.  For these young fellows, the sound is original.  The singer can sing and the band members can play and that is what you definitely need when you’re at a young age with a band.  They’re rising high and rising hard!  Their album “Hiding inside the Horrible Weather” is in stores now!  It’s a must!

Kid Rock – All Summer Long **1/2 (Album:  Rock N’ Roll Jesus)

Review:  I’m going to bash Mr. Rock a little here, but if you’re a huge fan of him…don’t take this offensively.  Kid Rock can sing and Kid Rock can rock the f*ck out…but he needs his own beats to do it.  “All Summer Long” is basically Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” beats and guitars in the background…I understand that Kid has worked with them and has done songs with them (And I assume got their permission for this)…but sometimes you can’t touch Lynyrd’s songs.  I mean…covers are fine, those don’t bother me…but when you take other riffs and beats from another song and make your own song…it’s not original.  “Rock N’ Roll Jesus” is in stores…and I tell you, I’ve only liked one song off that album so far…

City Sleeps – Not An Angel ****1/2 (Album:  Not An Angel)

Review:  You know, you always here about these bands that are making it huge when you talk to your friends or when you watch MTV or VH1…and I have a feeling that City Sleeps will be one of those conversations starters.  Their debut single “Not An Angel” is just full of productivity and so much originality.  They are one of those alternative/rock bands and I have a good heart for bands like that…because they swing on both sides of the fence and STILL sound awesome.  This is a message song and a good one none the less.  It’s still kind of missing something…but I’m not sure what it is.  Their CD “Not An Angel” is on the shelves right now…you have to pick it up!

Exies – These Are The Days ***** (Album:  A Modern Way Of Living With The Truth)

Review:  I’ve seen these guys live in concert twice and every time they come out with a new single…I get over excited like a prepubescent 13 year old!  “These Are the Days” by the Exies is ONE of the songs of the week for New Music Thursday.  (Yes, I choose two!)  This is the third single off their new album and while hearing this one, you have this tingle that makes you want to buy their album.  Once again…it’s a message about living days in your life and how they obviously last forever…something that can relate to anyone.  The Exies get bigger and bigger every time they come out with a new song…and this makes them extraordinary.  “A Modern Way of Living with the Truth” is in stores…you cannot pass this album up!

Black Keys – Strange Times **** (Album:  Attack & Release)

Review:  If you’re looking for a new band to listen to and you also kind of like the White Stripes…this is the band that’ll do it for you.  The Black Keys newest single “Strange Times” is off of their new album “Attack & Release”…and its sounds kind of poppy!  Like I said, they have that White Stripes sound to them but it is also bluesy in a sense.  It definitely makes you wanna listen to them over and over again just to see what the other songs are going to sound like.  I think that’s how the White Stripes were too…very interesting I’ll tell ya!  Their new album “Attack & Release” hits stores on 4/1/08…it seems interesting to me, it might to you too!  Black Keys and White Stripes…I like that!  The combo works!

Rush – Workin’ Them Angels *** (Album:  Snakes & Arrows)

Review:  You know something, I have to give Rush some credit…they came back from their old ages and jumped back in the studio to make an album and they jumped on tour to promote it…but sometimes you have to hang up the garter belt.  Rush’s newest single “Workin’ Them Angels” is the same old Rush…just more enthusiasm I guess you want to say.  It has the same riffs, beats, guitars and all that fun stuff…but like I said, it’s time to move on Rush.  You need to just sit back down in your Barcaloungers and enjoy the retirement because it’s kinda done.  They made a good new album and had enough energy to go back on tour…but sometimes you know when it’s over.  “Snakes & Arrows” is out and about…if you’re a Rush fan, you might need to get this…

Copper – Broken Sky ***** (Album:  N/A)

Review:  This is a band that I am starting to love after hearing this single.  Copper’s newest single “Broken Sky” is the second song for song of the week inside New Music Thursday.  The only thing I am disappointed about is that these guys aren’t signed to a label yet and their newest album isn’t titled yet.  On to the song though!  Copper’s sound kind of hits me like they are true rockers to the heart and there is no way in hell they want to ruin that sound.  Whatever label picks them up is going to get a big ass smile on their face because these guys can light it up any which way they want.  Their newest album is hitting stores in April…but unfortunately I don’t know the name of it…but when I find out, you’ll be the first to know!!!

Operator – Delicate **** (Album:  Soulcrusher)

Review:  Time for the third single off of “Soulcrusher” to hit the radio airwaves.  Operator’s newest single “Delicate” is kinda slowed down a little compared to the other two singles…which doesn’t make it worse, but maybe a little better.  Sometimes, you want to see if a band can make some other types of music compared to either their hard side or soft side…so you definitely need to try and make both…and Operator succeeded.  “Delicate” has a nice tune to it and I have no complaints other then maybe it could have been a little harded…but you know me, I get picky sometimes!  “Soulcrusher” has hit the stores shelves and it’s available to you…go buy it, you won’t be disappointed.
