SUMMARY:Hancock - Girls Hockey Powerskating Clinic
DESCRIPTION:The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association (CCJHA) is hosting a Girls Hockey Powerskating Clinic on Oct. 25 and 26. The clinic is geared toward\nyoung women from 8U through 19U. It is lead by Former Harvard Women’s Hockey Player and Captain Dr. Colleen Linehan. The action takes place at the HoCo\nArena in the Houghton County Fairgrounds. \n  \nLinehan has coached Powerskating for over 20 years\, was Team Captain at Harvard and co-coached with the Mid-Michigan Alliance Girls Varsity Hockey Team.\nGirls will need to be registered with USA Hockey and should already know how to skate. The clinic will help young athletes improve their skills and be more confident on the ice. \n  \n“Girls Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States\,” said Amy Blake\, with CCJHA. “The CCJHA has a 40-year history of girls hockey teams\, and it’s awesome to see girls hockey growing up here in the U.P. and starting to gain more attention as it gains popularity around the world. The CCJHA hopes to keep building its program\, adding more opportunities for girls’ hockey.” \n  \nThe event is free to young female athletes\, but they must be registered with USA Hockey. USA Hockey registration and the Powerskating clinic are paid for by the David Wiitanen and Slim McLean Memorial Youth Hockey Fund. Known locally as the “HoCo Arena”\, the venue was constructed in 1972 in Hancock and is where the Hancock Bulldogs play home games on ice. You can find out more information about the clinic and the CCJHA at ccjha.org.

DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference (MBLGTACC) will be held at Northern Michigan University Oct. 25-27. Now in its 32nd year\, it is the nation’s largest and oldest-continuously running conference for queer and trans+ college students and young adults\, designed to catalyze conversation and action around relevant issues. Each year\, MBLGTACC makes one Midwest community a destination for a diverse gathering of 2\,000+ college students. \nThe conference is a program of the Midwest Institute for Sexuality and Gender Diversity. Its 2024 theme is We Are Everywhere. The schedule includes keynote speakers\, breakout sessions and more. \n“We’re thrilled to partner with NMU to host MBLGTACC in Marquette\, centering queer and trans people from rural and small communities while showcasing Michigan’s picturesque Upper Peninsula\,” said Justin Drwencke\, the Institute’s executive director. \nMLBGTACC hosts dozens of workshops on LGBTQIA+\, intersectional topics and interests\, along with keynotes from leading advocates and performances from popular entertainers. It has attracted advocates and thought leaders including Angela Davis\, Robyn Ochs\, Janet Mock\, Laverne Cox\, Kate Bornstein\, Faisal Alam\, and LZ Granderson; and entertainers and artists including Jujubee\, Margaret Cho\, J Mase III\, Chely Wright\, and Loren Cameron. \nThe Midwest Institute for Sexuality and Gender Diversity was formed in 2016 with a mandate to provide robust strategic and operational support for conference operations and campus planning teams; to continue improving the MBLGTACC experience for all attendees and partners; to relentlessly pursue diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in value and practice; and to grow the capacity of the organization beyond the annual conference. \nFor more information visit mblgtacc.org.

SUMMARY:Hancock - Haunted Hoist House: Fears and Phobias for You
DESCRIPTION:Face your fears and phobias in the Quincy Mine Haunted Hoist House this weekend. Michigan Tech University’s Theatre Department is curating lights\,\nsounds and animations to resurrect the Halloween spirit of the Keweenaw. Instead of relying on traditional haunted house themes\, this event focuses on evoking unsettling sensations through creepy elements like clowns\, mannequins and other dolls – and eerie visuals. Visitors will travel through dimly lit\, spooky themed sections\, encountering unsettling sounds\, and multiple automated effects that will heighten the scare factor. It’s a unique way to see the mine\, taking you through closed off areas you wouldn’t see on a normal tour. \n  \nThe Haunted Hoist House experience opens this Thursday\, Oct. 24 through Saturday\, Oct. 26 from 7-10:30 p.m. All ages are welcome\, but young children should have adult supervision and adults should be mindful of the event’s theme. \n  \nThe journey begins at the Quincy Mine’s gift shop/visitor center just off US-41 at the flashing light by Peterson’s Fish Market. Folks will purchase tickets here before winding into the spinetingling hallways of the Hoist House. The event is also a hands-on opportunity for Michigan Tech students to practice and refine their craftmanship and technical skills. Students get to push their creative boundaries to organize the haunted mine further each year.

SUMMARY:Rocky Horror Show at NMU
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance and the Masonic Arts\, Theatre & Innovation Company (MÄTI) announce a new chapter for The Rocky Horror Show. After successfully producing this cult classic for the past few years\, MÄTI is passing the artistic torch to NMU Theatre and Dance\, which will stage the show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 24 through Saturday\, Oct. 26 in Forest Roberts Theatre\, with later 10:30 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday. \nThe Rocky Horror Show humorously pays homage to B movies from the science fiction and horror genres spanning the 1930s to early 1960s. Intended for mature audiences\, the plot follows a newly engaged couple who\, after being caught in a storm\, find themselves at the mansion of a flamboyant transvestite scientist\, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. There\, they encounter his latest creation\, Rocky—a Frankenstein-like figure who is a fully grown\, physically perfect muscle man with blonde hair and a tan. \n“The Rocky Horror Show has become a beloved tradition under the stewardship of MÄTI\, drawing enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews. We are incredibly grateful to MÄTI for entrusting us with this iconic production\,” said Bill Digneit\, department head of NMU Theatre and Dance. “Our students and faculty are eager to bring new life to the production. This transition exemplifies the strong collaborative spirit within the Marquette arts community.” \n“MÄTI has had a fantastic journey with The Rocky Horror Show\, and we are confident that NMU Theatre and Dance will continue to elevate the production\,” said Sarah Balding and Ryan Engle of MÄTI. “We look forward to donating funds to support their inaugural run and witnessing their unique take on this beloved show.” \nAll proceeds from NMU’s production will support student artists and provide educational experiences beyond the classroom. Digneit says this initiative underscores NMU’s commitment to fostering the next generation of theater professionals. \nTickets are: $25 for the general public; $22 for NMU faculty/staff\, seniors and military; $15 for students 18 and under; and $5 for NMU students with ID. They are available at nmu.universitytickets.com.
