SUMMARY:Northern Tier\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Finnish American artist Eric Aho
DESCRIPTION:The Finlandia Art Gallery and Finlandia Foundation National (FFN) are pleased to present Northern Tier\, an exhibition of oil paintings by Finnish American artist Eric Aho. The exhibit will be on display from September 18 to November 13\, 2025\, at the Finlandia Art Gallery\, located in the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock.  \nA reception for the artist will take place on Thursday\, October 9\, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.\, with an artist talk beginning at 7:20 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. \nAho will also be participating in Finlandia Foundation’s first Artist in Residency program\, coming to the Copper Country in early October to find inspiration in our lush forests and pristine shoreline. During his residency\, Aho will complete several finished artworks which will be on display alongside 25 works sent from his Vermont studio.  \nFFN recognized Eric Aho as Artist of the Year from 2022-2024\, honoring his outstanding contributions to contemporary art and celebrating his deep connections to his Finnish American culture and traditions. This exhibition and residency serve as a culmination to his contributions as Artist of the Year. \nAho is a third-generation Finnish American living in Vermont. His grandfather emigrated to the United States in 1903\, followed by his grandmother and uncle in 1906. His aunt and father were born in the Finnish community of Sugar Creek\, Ohio\, in 1917 and 1920\, respectively. Shortly after his father’s birth\, the family relocated to the vibrant Finnish community in Fitchburg and Townsend\, Massachusetts. \nAho maintains strong personal and professional ties to his ancestral Finland and credits his Finnish American upbringing as a continuing source of inspiration and influence in his work. \nHis paintings represent the Finnish way of life\, strongly connected to nature\, sauna and community. In his Finlandia Art Gallery exhibit Northern Tier\, Aho will exhibit paintings that are shaped by both memory and direct observation of northern boreal forests\, forests that stretch across high northern latitudes. Providing a particularly rich and complex subject for Aho\, northern boreal forests represent both a biome and a wellspring for his imagination. For many years\, Aho has painted across vast geographic locations\, from the northern United States to the Laurentian Mountains of Canada\, and across to Scandinavia and the Finnish taiga. \n“These trees-along with their verdant understories and varied terrains\, often punctuated by streams\, rapids\, and glacial erratics-register in my eye and imagination as the forests central to our archetypal associations\,” says Aho. “My forest paintings\, like much of my work\, invite multiple meanings and interpretations. I’m inclined to suggest unseen human presence in the forest through the materiality of paint itself. Oil color oozes and tenses\, puckers and shines\, drawing our attention to the human-like qualities of the forest beyond the limbs\, trunks\, veins\, and crowns we share in common.” \n“Forests are wild and mysterious places\, but they are also familiar refuges\,” continues Aho. “At times\, they’re grand and architectural-cathedral-like\, with arcades\, columns\, vaults\, and aisles. Other woods are smaller and feel intimate. Their spaces\, organized like rooms\, hallways\, foyers\, and thresholds\, evoke the places we live in and inhabit. In these ways\, the Northern Tier paintings are as much about worlds within the forested places as they are about the world of paint and its magical ability to transform space and time.” \nNorthern Tier will be on display through November 13\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Superior Shipwrecks Exhibit Opens at Beaumier Center
DESCRIPTION:The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will open a new exhibition titled “Gales of November: Shipwrecks on Lake Superior” at noon on Friday\, Sept. 19\, in its gallery in Gries Hall. \nFrom the earliest days of sailing vessels on Lake Superior\, November has taken its toll on the maritime trade. This exhibit will look at some of the more famous and fascinating shipwrecks that led to either the disappearance of a vessel or its eventual destruction.   \nIn November\, large arctic air masses in Alaska and Canada begin to make their way southeast across the lakes\, while low-pressure systems from the Gulf of Mexico travel northward toward the lakes. When these systems collide over the Great Lakes\, it creates a very unstable weather pattern that can essentially turn into an inland hurricane. One nickname for these storms is the “Witch of November\,” characterized by gale-force winds\, massive waves and quick-changing weather patterns.  \nNovember will mark the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the “Edmund Fitzgerald” and the story of that tragedy will be chronicled in the exhibit. Other shipwrecks that will be featured include the “Algoma” (1885)\, “Bannockburn” (1902)\, “Lucerne” (1886)\, “Myron” (1919) and many others. Each section will feature images of these ships\, copies of weather maps from the day they sank\, and newspaper headlines of some of the storms that wrecked their havoc on Lake Superior shipping. There will also be several artifacts on display from various Lake Superior shipwrecks on loan from Isle Royale National Park. \nVisitors can also view a selection of drawings on display by the noted maritime artist Ed Pusick that feature his dramatic interpretations of various shipwrecks\, including the “Edmund Fitzgerald.” These drawings are on loan from the Fred Stonehouse collection at the Marquette Maritime Museum. Pusick (1927-2006) was a Navy veteran and architectural illustrator\, best known as the “Master of Disaster” for his detailed illustrations of Great Lakes shipwrecks. After a military accident disabled him\, he pursued his passion for drawing\, creating influential shipwreck art that was featured on the History Channel\, in museums and in books by historians such as Fred Stonehouse.  \nThe exhibition will be on display in the Beaumier Center’s gallery through Dec. 20 and is free and open to the public. The Beaumier Center is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

SUMMARY:NMU Theatre and Dance "Ctl+Alt+Delete"
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will stage Ctrl+Alt+Delete\, a darkly comic look at tech startups\, speculative investment\, and the value we assign to ideas in a rapidly evolving economy. The production runs Oct. 30–Nov. 2 and Nov. 6–9 in NMU’s Panowski Black Box Theatre. \n  \nSet during the tech boom of the late 1990s\, Ctrl+Alt+Delete follows wunderkind Eddie Fisker\, a young tech developer who teams up with a visionary entrepreneur to launch a revolutionary new app. As the startup gains traction\, the team becomes increasingly disconnected from the ethical and real-world consequences of their creation. What begins as a promising tech venture quickly spirals into a chaotic satire of modern business culture. \n  \n“This is more a play about funny money than technology itself\,” said director Jimmy Ludwig\, who starred in the leading role in the play’s original East Coast premiere. “It’s really all about how we create and assign value\, and how the power of belief can literally create wealth. The dot-com era saw an ability to generate wealth that outpaced anything we’d seen before. This play explores the difference between selling a product and selling potential. If you’re selling a product\, you’re a sitting duck. It can fail\, break\, get old. But if you’re selling the idea of something\, the whole blue sky is the limit.” \n  \nLudwig calls the show especially timely in today’s world of cryptocurrency. The play’s themes reflect cycles seen throughout economic history. \n  \n“We’ve turned this cast into economists\,” Ludwig said. “We looked at every bubble in history\, from the Dutch tulip craze to the 1929 crash. Our entire economy is built on speculation. Every time it happens\, someone at the top says\, ‘This is fine.’ Until someone else finally says\, ‘This is actually built on nothing.’” \n  \nLudwig said a subplot\, which he doesn’t want to disclose as a spoiler\, provides great comic relief. \n  \n“It is a very fast-paced play that really crackles\,” he added. “We’re doing a lot of fun stuff with technology for this production. There will actually be what we’re calling the Jumbotron: four screens that face each bank of seats in the round\, with five cameras positioned all around the space. That way the audience gets to be in this proscenium and see moments where the actors are facing away from them.” \n  \nShowtimes are 7:30 nightly with an additional 1 p.m. matinee on Nov. 8 and a sensory-friendly\, “pay what you can” Theatre for All matinee at 1 p.m. on Nov. 1. Tickets are $25 for the general public; $22 for NMU faculty/staff\, seniors 60+ and military; $15 for youth under 18; and $5 for NMU students. They can be purchased at nmu.universitytickets.com. \n  \nFor more details on the production\, visit nmu.edu/theatreanddance/ctrlaltdelete.

SUMMARY:Marquette Regional History Center presents: Here Comes the Wizard Oil Wagon: Senior Support Series
DESCRIPTION:Marquette Regional History Center presents:\nHere Comes the Wizard Oil Wagon: Senior Support Series (SSS)\nWednesday\, November 5\, 1:30 p.m. \nDuring the last quarter of the nineteenth century\, Marquette County residents eagerly awaited the arrival of various traveling medicine shows. The shows consisted of free musical performances and humorous skits\, plus sales pitches for whatever medicine the self-proclaimed “doctor” was selling. This presentation by local history buff Bill Van Kosky will take us back to the golden age of quackery\, when medical science was floundering and anyone could legally put anything in a bottle and say that it would cure all ills of man or beast. This daytime SSS program includes an antique medical equipment display by Chip Truscon\, door prizes\, and complimentary Dead River Coffee.\nAll ages welcome.\nFree program.\nFor more info visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571

SUMMARY:City of Houghton Branding Working Sessions
DESCRIPTION:City of Houghton Invites Community to Branding Working Sessions \n  \nThe City of Houghton invites residents and stakeholders to participate in one of two public working sessions dedicated to shaping the future of Houghton’s community brand. These sessions will be held: \n  \n Wednesday\, November 5\, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. \n  \n Tuesday\, November 11\, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. \n  \nBoth drop-in sessions will take place at the City Center in downtown Houghton and will run approximately two hours. \n  \nEach session will begin with an overview of the city’s branding initiative\, explaining why this effort is both important and timely. Residents are encouraged to join a session at any time during the two-hour period. During each session\, attendees will be asked to provide feedback on the central themes developed from public input: Home\, Views\, and Progress. Each session  marks an important step in public engagement; input gathered from each session will be used to shape the city’s brand going forward. \n  \nThis initiative builds upon the city’s first branding survey\, conducted between November and December 2024\, which generated 637 responses from 254 zip codes. That input\, representing residents\, neighbors\, and visitors\, highlighted the importance of community identity and helped establish the three guiding themes: \n  \n Home — A place where you always feel you belong. \n  \n Views — A year-round landscape that inspires. \n  \n Progress — A city rooted in history\, building for tomorrow. \n  \nWhy Branding? \n  \nIn 2021\, Houghton earned Redevelopment Ready Communities® (RRC) certification from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). This\ncertification provides the city with access to resources to advance community development goals. RRC’s mission is to empower communities to shape their future by integrating best practices in planning\, zoning\, and economic development. \n  \nBranding is identified as a critical tool for strengthening economic health\, building community pride\, and increasing investor confidence. The MEDC strongly encourages communities to develop marketing and branding strategies promoting their unique identity and sense of place. \n  \nAccomplishments \n  \n In July 2024\, Houghton’s Planning Commission formed a committee to explore branding and survey community perspectives. \n  \n By March 2025\, four additional Houghton residents joined the committee\, broadening viewpoints and sharpening the city’s understanding of its identity. \n  \n Three themes Home\, Views\, and Progress emerged as pillars of Houghton’s brand. \n  \nWhere We’re Heading \n  \nThe goal of this process is to define our story—how we view where we live\, and who we are as a community. \n  \nEconomic development requires more than business attraction; it must also embrace community development and talent retention. This effort seeks to unify residents\, businesses\, nonprofits\, and local government around a shared identity that strengthens both civic pride and long-term economic vitality. \n  \nResident participation is valued. By attending an October work session\, participants  will help validate and shape the branding themes that will guide Houghton’s story for years to come. \n  \nContact:\nCity of Houghton\n906-482-1700 / info@cityofhoughton.com / cityofhoughton.com

SUMMARY:'American Revolution' Preview and Panel Discussion Nov. 5
DESCRIPTION:  \nWNMU-TV will host a preview screening and panel discussion related to “The American Revolution\,” a new Ken Burns six-part\, 12-hour documentary series that explores the country’s founding struggle and its eight-year War for Independence. The screening is open to the public and takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday\, Nov. 5\, in the Northern Center Ballrooms on Northern Michigan University’s campus.  \n“This opportunity to learn about the founding of the United States’ democracy is brought to you as part of NMU’s commitment to expand opportunities for civic learning and community engagement by staff\, faculty and students\,” said Tammy Wixtrom Johnson of WNMU public media. “This is one of the strategies outlined in Our Compass\, NMU’s strategic plan.” \nHosting the event for WNMU-TV is Jim Koski. The three panelists leading the discussion and question segment are the following NMU faculty and staff members:  Carter Wilson\, professor and department head\, Political Science & Public Administration; Emily Romeo\, assistant professor\, History; and Justin Schapp\, assistant director of KCP grant administration and faculty/staff initiatives\, Office of Opportunity\, Empowerment & People. \nThis screening event gives a preview of “The American Revolution\,” which has been in production for eight years. It was directed and produced by Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt\, and written by longtime collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward. The series premieres Sunday\, Nov. 16 and airs for six consecutive nights through Friday\, Nov. 21 from 8-10:00 p.m. ET on WNMU-TV.  \nAccording to a synopsis\, it examines how America’s founding turned the world upside-down. Thirteen British colonies on the Atlantic Coast rose in rebellion\, won their independence\, and established a new form of government that radically reshaped the continent and inspired centuries of democratic movements around the globe.  \n“The American Revolution is one of the most important events in human history.” said Burns. “We went from being subjects to inventing a new concept–citizens–and set in motion democratic revolutions around the globe. As we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our founding\, I’m hopeful that people throughout the country will come together to discuss the importance of this history and to appreciate even more what our ancestors did to secure our liberty and freedoms.” \nInformation provided by WNMU-TV \n
