SUMMARY:Beaumier Center Hosts Opening Reception in New Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will unveil two exhibits in its new gallery space in 223 Harden Hall: “The Conservationists: George Shiras III\, Theodore Roosevelt and the Migratory Bird Act”; and a permanent display of artifacts\, photographs and stories about NMU. It will be on display through May 2. \nThe permanent display on NMU will include the history of many of the campus structures\, stories of early presidents and faculty members\, and student life.  This space will feature a changing array of artifacts from the collection of the Beaumier Center\, which is the repository for Northern’s history. \nThe Beaumier Center’s regular hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday\, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. SUMMARY:The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit: The U.P. Through 250 Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:February 23\, 2026-January 2\, 2027 \nThis exhibit showcases two hundred and fifty artifacts\, photographs\, and documents from our permanent collections. These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. \nMichigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However\, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well\, especially since the War of 1812. When the country braced for the Civil War\, U.P. iron miners raced to uncover iron for the Union army’s railroads and ammunitions. When labor movements exploded following World War II\, Ishpeming’s Gossard garment factory went on strike for better wages. Objects rarely on display include the medal awarded to a local Spanish American War nurse and a hand sewn battle flag brought home by a soldier from the War of 1812.  Visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571 for more info.

SUMMARY:Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge Announces 2026 Winter Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge Announces 2026 Winter Film Festival \n\nThree Thursday evenings in March dedicated to exploring wildlife\, science\, and conservation in the Great Lakes \n  \nThe Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge will host their 2026 Winter Film Festival on three consecutive Thursday evenings in March at the Erickson Center Pine Performance Center. This year’s festival theme\, Science\, Stories & Wildlife of the Great Lakes\, invites audiences to look more closely at the natural systems and conservation efforts shaping the region. \n  \nThe festival opens on Thursday\, March 5\, with a live presentation\, Owls of Whitefish Point\, featuring wildlife photographers and field biologists Chris Neri and Nova Mackentley. Drawing on nearly two decades of owl banding experience\, the presenters will share firsthand stories and research insights into snowy owl migration and long-term monitoring in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The presentation is a partnership between Friends of Whitefish Point and Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge. \n  \nOn Thursday\, March 12\, audiences will enjoy All Too Clear\, a visually stunning exploration of the Great Lakes beneath the surface. Using cutting-edge underwater drone technology\, the film reveals how invasive quagga mussels are transforming freshwater ecosystems in the Great Lakes—and how scientists are racing to understand and respond to these changes. This will be one of the first screenings of this award winning Canadian-produced film in the US. Elliot Nelson\, Michigan Sea Grant and Michigan State Extension\, will be available to answer questions after the film. \n  \nThe festival concludes on Thursday\, March 19\, with the documentary Return of the Trumpeters\, which chronicles the remarkable recovery of trumpeter swans following their near extinction. The 90-minute film\, produced by Steve Devon\, is a project of the Trumpeter Swan Society and includes spectacular footage of Seney’s swans. The film highlights the dedication\, collaboration\, and conservation strategies that helped restore this iconic species to Great Lakes wetlands. A Seney ranger will be on hand to answer questions after the film. \n  \nAll events will be held at the Erickson Center’s Pine Performance Center\, W9224 Saw-Wa-Quato\, Curtis Michigan. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.\, with programs beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free\, and donations are appreciated.  Concessions will be available by donation. \n  \nProceeds from the Winter Film Festival support the mission of the Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people with the refuge through education\, outreach\, and conservation support. \n  \nFor more information\, email friends@friendsofseney.org
