SUMMARY:Beaumier Center Hosts Opening Reception in New Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will unveil two exhibits in its new gallery space in 223 Harden Hall: “The Conservationists: George Shiras III\, Theodore Roosevelt and the Migratory Bird Act”; and a permanent display of artifacts\, photographs and stories about NMU. The opening reception begins at noon Saturday\, Jan. 31. \n“The Conservationists” focuses on the relationship between Shiras and Roosevelt and how the two helped shape conservation and environmental policy in the United States during the early 1900s. The exhibit will feature actual correspondence between the two figures from the collection of the Central Upper Peninsula and NMU Archives\, as well as bird mounts from the Northern Museum of Zoology. It will be on display through May 2. \nThe permanent display on NMU will include the history of many of the campus structures\, stories of early presidents and faculty members\, and student life.  This space will feature a changing array of artifacts from the collection of the Beaumier Center\, which is the repository for Northern’s history. \nThe Beaumier Center’s regular hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday\, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. SUMMARY:The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit: The U.P. Through 250 Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:February 23\, 2026-January 2\, 2027 \nThis exhibit showcases two hundred and fifty artifacts\, photographs\, and documents from our permanent collections. These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. \nMichigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However\, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well\, especially since the War of 1812. When the country braced for the Civil War\, U.P. iron miners raced to uncover iron for the Union army’s railroads and ammunitions. When labor movements exploded following World War II\, Ishpeming’s Gossard garment factory went on strike for better wages. Objects rarely on display include the medal awarded to a local Spanish American War nurse and a hand sewn battle flag brought home by a soldier from the War of 1812.  Visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571 for more info.

It is the Upper Peninsula’s most esteemed and historic race relay event. Join the Noquemanon Trail Network in celebrating the 48th annual Big Bay Relay kicking off at the Kaufman Sports Complex Saturday\, May 16th 2026!  \nThe relay welcomes runners of all levels and we cannot wait to see what creative team names our runners come up with for the 2026 race! Teams are composed of five runners for adults and up to seven for youth teams. The relay spans the twenty-six mile stretch of Marquette’s historic 550 Big Bay Road and the finish line is in Draver Park in Big Bay.   \nIn spring of 1972\, Marquette held its first Big Bay Relay coordinated by Race Director Karen Kunkle and her husband Jack. The first race brought only ten relay teams and has grown to include over fifty teams in the past several years.  \nIf you are an elite runner who wants to compete\, or a group of friends that want to try something adventurous\, this picturesque relay is for you. For 48 years the Big Bay Relay has been uniting community members\, families and friends\, and we want you to be a part of this year’s race! SUMMARY:Bonnie Loukus : Liminal Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:April 23 – June 10\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, April 23\, 7-8:30pm \nHANCOCK\, Mich. – Existing between different spaces while not fully belonging to one or the other is something many people experience. What does it mean to belong and how do we know when we do belong? Liminal Sanctuaries\, a new exhibition by Michigan artist Bonnie Loukus\, features oil paintings of solitary animals and forest floor ecosystems\, in between reality and some incorporeal place where they exist without human interference. The exhibit opens with a reception at Finlandia Art Gallery on Thursday\, April 23 at 7pm and will be on display through June 10.  \n  \nBonnie Loukus is a Keweenaw-based multidisciplinary artist practicing oil painting\, printmaking\, letterpress\, and book arts. Her work explores themes such as the intrinsic value of animals\, plant diversity\, small ecosystems\, symbolism\, incorporeal life\, and solitude. “Being a multidisciplinary artist\, this focus on painting has been a chance to explore my own liminality through observing animals\, plants\, and fungi to the point of sonder while researching symbolism\, poetry\, and color\,” she said. \n  \nThe paintings in the exhibit transport the viewer into what feels like a different world. “This work is a glimpse into something we won’t quite ever have being human\, with the closest possibility of understanding this only achieved by spending time alone in the natural world\,” Loukus explained. “My hope is that this work also conveys that space between contemplative solitude and the desire to connect.” \n  \nLoukus was born in Laurium\, Michigan. She is a Finlandia University graduate who majored in an interdisciplinary honors program that focused on the connection of arts\, culture\, and the environment. During the brief Upper Michigan summers\, with their long days and good light\, she focuses on painting\, sometimes painting at the family’s Finnish homestead\, overlooking former potato fields and cow pastures where her father now “makes hay.” When the days become short and dark\, she turns her practice to printmaking\, spending the evenings carving linoleum blocks. \n  \nHer work is part of US and international collections and recent artist residencies have taken her to Estonia\, Isle Royale National Park\, and Keweenaw Land Trust’s Silver Island. She is the executive director of the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. Youth of all ages are encouraged to submit art to the Peter White Public Library Youth Services desk beginning May 1st through July 31st\, 2026. Artists may find inspiration in the Summer Reading: Unearth a Story theme\, but are not confined to the given theme for their art pieces. We ask that your submissions do not exceed 12 inches in any direction\, and that only one art piece is submitted per child. Submissions can be made at home\, school\, or during a library program. Informational handouts detailing submission guidelines are now available at the Youth Services Desk. All submissions will be entered into the Jurassic Art Summer Reading Installation. Art will be installed on the Lower Level Art Gallery wall of the Peter White Public Library starting in July 2026. DESCRIPTION:Saturday May 2\, 2026.  \n11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  \nPeter White Public Library Great Room.  \nFamilies with youth of all ages are invited to a special meet & greet with local author & illustrator Mary Anne Welch & Meghan Bjork. Their new picture book “There’s Gnome Place like Marquette” follows the Marquette adventures of a little gnome who wonders what it would be like to wander. Kids will be thrilled to recognize familiar features of Marquette as they follow the little gnome throughout the story! At the event Mary Anne and Meghan will read their story and answer questions. Kids will get to color pages from the book and take home a special scavenger hunt that will inspire them to wander with Little Gnome and maybe discover somewhere new in this beautiful place we call home.
