SUMMARY:The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit: The U.P. Through 250 Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:February 23\, 2026-January 2\, 2027 \nThis exhibit showcases two hundred and fifty artifacts\, photographs\, and documents from our permanent collections. These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. \nMichigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However\, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well\, especially since the War of 1812. When the country braced for the Civil War\, U.P. iron miners raced to uncover iron for the Union army’s railroads and ammunitions. When labor movements exploded following World War II\, Ishpeming’s Gossard garment factory went on strike for better wages. SUMMARY:Bonnie Loukus : Liminal Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:April 23 – June 10\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, April 23\, 7-8:30pm \nHANCOCK\, Mich. – Existing between different spaces while not fully belonging to one or the other is something many people experience. What does it mean to belong and how do we know when we do belong? Liminal Sanctuaries\, a new exhibition by Michigan artist Bonnie Loukus\, features oil paintings of solitary animals and forest floor ecosystems\, in between reality and some incorporeal place where they exist without human interference. The exhibit opens with a reception at Finlandia Art Gallery on Thursday\, April 23 at 7pm and will be on display through June 10.  \n  \nBonnie Loukus is a Keweenaw-based multidisciplinary artist practicing oil painting\, printmaking\, letterpress\, and book arts. Her work explores themes such as the intrinsic value of animals\, plant diversity\, small ecosystems\, symbolism\, incorporeal life\, and solitude. “Being a multidisciplinary artist\, this focus on painting has been a chance to explore my own liminality through observing animals\, plants\, and fungi to the point of sonder while researching symbolism\, poetry\, and color\,” she said. \n  \nThe paintings in the exhibit transport the viewer into what feels like a different world. “This work is a glimpse into something we won’t quite ever have being human\, with the closest possibility of understanding this only achieved by spending time alone in the natural world\,” Loukus explained. “My hope is that this work also conveys that space between contemplative solitude and the desire to connect.” \n  \nLoukus was born in Laurium\, Michigan. She is a Finlandia University graduate who majored in an interdisciplinary honors program that focused on the connection of arts\, culture\, and the environment. During the brief Upper Michigan summers\, with their long days and good light\, she focuses on painting\, sometimes painting at the family’s Finnish homestead\, overlooking former potato fields and cow pastures where her father now “makes hay.” When the days become short and dark\, she turns her practice to printmaking\, spending the evenings carving linoleum blocks. \n  \nHer work is part of US and international collections and recent artist residencies have taken her to Estonia\, Isle Royale National Park\, and Keweenaw Land Trust’s Silver Island. She is the executive director of the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. Youth of all ages are encouraged to submit art to the Peter White Public Library Youth Services desk beginning May 1st through July 31st\, 2026. Artists may find inspiration in the Summer Reading: Unearth a Story theme\, but are not confined to the given theme for their art pieces. We ask that your submissions do not exceed 12 inches in any direction\, and that only one art piece is submitted per child. Submissions can be made at home\, school\, or during a library program. Informational handouts detailing submission guidelines are now available at the Youth Services Desk. All submissions will be entered into the Jurassic Art Summer Reading Installation. DESCRIPTION:The Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library (ICPL) is excited to announce that their annual Summer Reading Program is set to begin on June 9th! This year’s summer reading theme is “Unearth A Story.” \nICPL’s Summer Reading Program is open to all ages—babies through adults are welcome to participate in the fun! Individuals can pre-register for the challenge online by downloading the Beanstack app or visiting ishpeminglibrary.beanstack.org. Participants are entered for prizes by logging their reading\, writing reviews\, and attending library programs. This year we are having an entire week dedicated to our Summer Reading Kick-Off! Between Tuesday\, June 9th and Saturday\, June 13th\, you can visit the library to register for the reading program and choose a free book. Can’t make the kickoff? You can still register any time this summer. On Tuesday\, June 9th from 10am-2pm\, there is a special event for adults to drop-in and learn about the Summer Reading program while enjoying a cup of coffee and pastries. \nAdditionally\, we have over 80 events planned across all age groups that are free and open to the public. On Tuesday\, June 16th at 11am and 12:30pm\, we are hosting the Michigan Science Center for a “Dinosaurs of Michigan” Hands-On Workshop for kids\, tweens\, and teens. On Thursday\, June 18th at 5:30pm\, we welcome Tom Biron\, a survivor of the Holy Childhood Native American Boarding School\, to our library to share the truth about his experiences. Later that day at 5:30pm\, adults are invited to join us for a poetry reading with Alex Vartan Gubbins featuring is new book\, Decoding the Hill of Dead Kings. On Tuesday\, June 30th at 11am local author MaryAnne Welch alongside illustrator Meghan Bjork will lead a special storytime featuring their viral picture book\, Gnome Place Like Marquette. On Saturday\, July 11th at 11am\, there will be another special storytime featuring Chief Radabaugh of the Ishpeming Police Department who will read\, “If You Give a Pig a Pancake”\, with children in attendance receiving a free copy of the book. On Thursday\, July 16th at 2pm\, Michelle Briggs\, Chief Park Ranger of the Soo Locks\, will invite children to pretend they are aboard a freighter traveling from Marquette hauling iron ore. Throughout the course of the presentation children will learn about various jobs on board their “ship.” \nAdditionally\, events for adults this year will focus on local/Michigan history as apart of the “Unearth A Story” centered programming\, which we are so excited about! On Saturday\, June 27th at 1pm\, we will welcome Emily Cummings for a presentation on the Titanic and local ties to families in our area. On Wednesday\, July 1st at 5:30pm\, Jack Deo will be here to give a presentation featuring new photos of Negaunee\, Ishpeming\, Champion\, and Michigamme that he has discovered! Washington St. in Downtown Marquette to bring the festive summer experience to the market and to the downtown every Wednesday this summer season. The Street closes at 3 pm and opens again at 9 pm. There will be no parking on the street during the closure. \nBusinesses that line the 100 block will be open during market hours\, including market setup from 3 pm to 5 pm. The street will be blocked off and closed for pedestrian traffic during market setup hours.. Please utilize crosswalks at the ends of the block to cross the street till 5 pm. \nShoppers will be greeted with a bustling street market offering a wide array of vendors from across the community every Wednesday. Shoppers can choose from fresh\, locally grown\, seasonal flowers and produce\, baked goods\, locally raised meat\, kombucha\, coffee\, bread\, hot sauce\, and more! Our artisans offer handcrafted goods such as soaps\, lotions\, jewelry\, woodworking products\, and knitted products\, to name a few. The Information Booth is located at the intersection of Washington and Front St.  \nThe Downtown Marquette Social District will be active during this time and extend into the street to offer Farmers Market attendees the opportunity to shop amongst the vendors with an alcoholic beverage purchased from a participating downtown restaurant or bar.
