SUMMARY:The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit: The U.P. Through 250 Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:February 23\, 2026-January 2\, 2027 \nThis exhibit showcases two hundred and fifty artifacts\, photographs\, and documents from our permanent collections. These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. \nMichigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However\, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well\, especially since the War of 1812. When the country braced for the Civil War\, U.P. iron miners raced to uncover iron for the Union army’s railroads and ammunitions. When labor movements exploded following World War II\, Ishpeming’s Gossard garment factory went on strike for better wages. Objects rarely on display include the medal awarded to a local Spanish American War nurse and a hand sewn battle flag brought home by a soldier from the War of 1812.  Visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571 for more info.

SUMMARY:Finlandia Art Gallery presents The 4th Annual Folk School at Midsummer Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:June 17 – August 19\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Wednesday\, June 17\, 7-8:30pm \nThe Folk School at Midsummer exhibit in the Finlandia Gallery at Finlandia Foundation’s Finnish American Heritage Center opens on Wednesday\, June 17. A reception will begin at 7 p.m. that evening and takes place in conjunction with the opening of an archival exhibit featuring the works of painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela that are part of the Heritage Center’s archive collection.  \n“It has become an annual tradition to celebrate midsummer with work from our Folk School\, but what visitors see in the exhibit really changes in beautiful ways from year to year\,” said Clare Zuraw\, director of the Finnish American Folk School and interim gallery director. “The creativity and skill of our incredible instructors and students shines brightly in this exhibit. All are welcome to visit and discover how we’re linking traditional skills with contemporary art.” \nRegular visitors to the annual exhibit have likely come to expect fiber art and this year is no exception with weaving\, knitting\, and felting throughout the gallery. Visitors will also find remarkable basketry\, ceramics\, instruments\, and wood carving. \nFolk School Ceramics Studio member Brooke Hilman reflects on the process of working with clay. “It grounds me in the physical world. It allows me to approach my process intuitively as a form of play\, and a form of reconnection to the body” she said. “Ceramics feels like a call toward something old\, steady\, and slow\, cultivating a deeper sense of authenticity through making.” \nThis sense of authenticity and steadiness suffuses the entire exhibition and the experience of learning and making at the Finnish American Folk School throughout the year.  \nThe opening reception on June 17 will also feature music\, with a 7pm performance by Kuparikielet\, the Folk School’s youth dance band. The Gallen-Kallela exhibit\, which will be displayed in the Martha Wiljanen Community Hall\, is the first time in nearly 20 years that these works of art by the world-renowned artist will grace the walls of the Heritage Center. Clare Zuraw\, along with archivist Joanna Chopp and Finlandia Foundation Executive Director Tommy Flanagan\, will offer brief remarks about both exhibits at about 7:30 p.m.  \n“The Gallen-Kallela exhibit will include original works\, as well as a set of signed heliogravure prints of some of his most well-known pieces\,” said archivist Joanna Chopp\, who is curating the display. Many of the pieces shown at the Heritage Center were created when Gallen-Kallela lived in the United States in the early 1920s. \nVisitors are welcome to view these and other exhibits inside the Finnish American Heritage Center Monday through Friday\, 8am-4:30pm. Next week\, special Juhannus celebrations will have the building open for demonstrations and music on Saturday\, June 20 from 10am-2pm and again for a community dance from 7pm-10pm. For more information\, call 906-370-3722 or visit www.finlandiaartgallery.com.

SUMMARY:Emberlight Festival Art in the Park
DESCRIPTION:June 27 – August 22 \nMiners Memorial Heritage Park \n771 E Ayer St. Ironwood\, MI 49938 \n  \nFree event \n  \nSponsored by the Gogebic Community College Foundation\, in memory of Alex Marciniak. \n  \nFrom June 27 through August 22\, visitors are invited to wander the 1.2-mile Aurora Loop and discover large-scale installations nestled among towering pines\, winding trails\, and the rugged beauty of the Northwoods. Created by artists from across the region\, this year’s exhibition reflects Emberlight’s 2026 theme\, New Ways to Dream – exploring imagination\, transformation\, memory\, identity\, and the power of collective creativity. \n  \nAlongside this year’s juried installations\, Emberlight proudly unveils two major community-centered projects through Art For All. A new collaborative installation invites audiences themselves to become part of the artistic process\, while a second large-scale work – created in partnership with students from five regional schools – draws inspiration from Ojibwe doodems\, reflecting themes of kinship\, ancestry\, and connection to the natural world through the voices and creativity of the next generation. Supported through funding from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, the project places young artists at the heart of the festival in a powerful new way. \n  \nhttps://emberlight.org/event/art-in-the-park-2026/ \n

SUMMARY:Beaumier Center Highlights Mary Jayne Hallifax's Photography
DESCRIPTION:exhibition opens July 9 and will be on display through Oct. 3 \nThe Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center \nThe Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU will open a new exhibition July 9 that features the work of one of the U.P.’s most prolific photographers. It is titled “Munising in Black & White: The Photographs of Mary Jayne Hallifax.” She was an in-demand commercial photographer who also captured numerous candid images of her hometown over seven decades. \nHallifax died in 2025 at the age of 96 and donated many of her original negatives to photograph collector Jack Deo\, who is loaning 60 images to the Beaumier Center for the exhibit. They represent a tiny fragment of her catalog and focus specifically on the 1950s and 1960s\, depicting community events\, street scenes\, school activities and the lives of people in the community.  \nA lifelong Munising resident\, Mary Jayne (Shampine) Hallifax was a 1946 graduate of W.G. Mather High School. While working on the school’s yearbook\, she was asked by the school secretary to take\, help develop and print photographs\, and from that her lifelong love with photography began. \nAfter she graduated and started working\, Mary Jayne spent her nights taking photos and developing them. It became such a passion that she gave up her job at People’s State Bank to pursue photography full time. She soon became Munising’s most in demand commercial photographer\, especially for weddings and senior photos. However\, she also loved just wandering the streets of Munising taking candid photos of people and the general “goings-on” in the community. She even took photos for the Michigan State Police crime lab. \nIn 1948\, Mary Jayne married Richard Hallifax\, and the pair worked on photography together. He did much of the film developing and press work\, while she focused on making prints\, and her portraiture studio work with families\, wedding parties and graduating students. During her career with newspaper work and even into retirement\, she photographed seven Michigan governors on their trips to Munising: G. Mennen “Soapy” Williams\, John Swainson\, George Romney\, William Milliken\, James Blanchard\, John Engler and Rick Snyder.  \nUp until her 95th birthday\, she had a weekly column “All About Town with Mary Jayne” or “Down Memory Lane in Alger County” for the Marquette Mining Journal and years earlier for the Munising News. \nThe exhibition will be on display through Oct. 3 at the Beaumier Center’s gallery in 223 Harden Hall at NMU. The center’s summer hours are noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is free and open to the public.  \n

SUMMARY:Powerful Tools for Caregivers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, August 13 through September 17\, 2026\, from 1:30-3:00 pm EST\, \nIshpeming Senior Center\, 121 Greenwood Street\, Ishpeming.  \n  \nPowerful Tools for Caregivers\, a six-week in-person workshop\, designed for the non-professional\, informal family caregiver\, will be held on Thursdays\, August 13 through September 17\, 2026\, from 1:30-3:00 pm EST\, at the Ishpeming Senior Center\, 121 Greenwood Street\, Ishpeming.  \nResearch studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition\, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health. The Powerful Tools for Caregivers program will provide caregivers tools to help reduce stress and increase relaxation\, make tough decisions\, reduce guilt\, anger and depression\, communicate effectively\, set goals and problem solve\, and take better care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend. Caregivers will benefit from the workshop whether they are helping a parent\, spouse\, or friend living at home\, in long-term care or across the country. The workshop focuses on self-care for the caregiver\, not on specific diseases or hands-on caregiving. \nPowerful Tools for Caregivers is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) in partnership with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited. \nTo register\, visit www.upcap.org (click on Events) or call 2-1-1 Monday through Friday\, 8 am to 4 pm for assistance. Registration ends when the class is full or on August 3. \n
