SUMMARY:Beaumier Center Hosts Opening Reception in New Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center will unveil two exhibits in its new gallery space in 223 Harden Hall: “The Conservationists: George Shiras III\, Theodore Roosevelt and the Migratory Bird Act”; and a permanent display of artifacts\, photographs and stories about NMU. The opening reception begins at noon Saturday\, Jan. 31. \n“The Conservationists” focuses on the relationship between Shiras and Roosevelt and how the two helped shape conservation and environmental policy in the United States during the early 1900s. The exhibit will feature actual correspondence between the two figures from the collection of the Central Upper Peninsula and NMU Archives\, as well as bird mounts from the Northern Museum of Zoology. It will be on display through May 2. \nThe permanent display on NMU will include the history of many of the campus structures\, stories of early presidents and faculty members\, and student life.  This space will feature a changing array of artifacts from the collection of the Beaumier Center\, which is the repository for Northern’s history. \nThe Beaumier Center’s regular hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday\, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. DESCRIPTION:February 23\, 2026-January 2\, 2027 \nThis exhibit showcases two hundred and fifty artifacts\, photographs\, and documents from our permanent collections. These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. \nMichigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However\, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well\, especially since the War of 1812. When the country braced for the Civil War\, U.P. iron miners raced to uncover iron for the Union army’s railroads and ammunitions. When labor movements exploded following World War II\, Ishpeming’s Gossard garment factory went on strike for better wages. SUMMARY:Traveling Exhibition "The Holocaust:  History\, Memory & Michigan Voices"
DESCRIPTION:“The Holocaust: History\, Memory & Michigan Voices\,” a new traveling exhibition created by the Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills\, is on display at Northern Michigan University’s Olson Library through April 30. An opening reception is scheduled at 4 p.m. Monday\, March 9\, in the Library Atrium. A smaller exhibit on art as resistance is also featured. \n  \n“In many ways\, the traveling exhibition is a condensed\, portable version of the Zekelman Center\,” said Ryan Bond\, an NMU staff member who teaches a history of the Holocaust class and is a member of the center. “The content there used to be oriented more toward the Nazi perpetrators\, but now the focus has shifted to victims’ and survivors’ personal stories—specifically\, Michigan survivors. I just learned that the Holocaust survivors who came to this state at some point after the war numbered at least 4\,000. That surprised me; I had no idea it was that many.” \n  \nWhen he taught the course in fall 2024\, Bond wanted to do something beyond his classroom that would benefit the broader NMU and Marquette-area communities. He invited a guest to campus whose mother was a Holocaust survivor. She stayed for three days\, visited six other classrooms\, presented a workshop for educators and participated in two full-film screenings of a documentary about her mother. \n  \nThis past October\, three Zekelman Center staff members came to NMU to give class presentations. That visit inspired Bond to propose bringing a traveling exhibit to campus. \n  \n“The Holocaust is an important topic that shouldn’t just be confined to my classroom\,” he said. “The center is very outreach- and teacher-oriented\, and because we can’t readily bring students there\, it made sense to collaborate and find a way to bring the center to us.” \n  \nBond secured support for the idea from Olson Library Director Emera Bridger Wilson and Dean of Library and Instructional Support Leslie Warren. \n“Olson Library is excited to host this exhibit\, the first of what we hope are many now that we are in our renovated spaces\,” Bridger Wilson said. “This exhibit also complements our Holocaust and Genocide Studies collection. We hope that people are made more aware of the collection through programming such as this.” \n“It was exciting to unpack three huge shipping crates and collaborate with colleagues from the library and history students who volunteered to set up the main exhibit and the art installation\,” said History Professor Kathryn Johnson\, who was part of the team that made it happen. \n  \nSenior history major Alexis Hall is helping to coordinate the exhibit and related events via an internship. Bond says he is in conversations with the Zekelman Center about possible summer internship opportunities in Farmington Hills for NMU students. \n  \nTo coincide with the display\, three Zekelman Center educators will be on campus March 25-26 for classroom presentations for history and other disciplines. They will also deliver a free full-day workshop for area teachers on using content from the exhibit and the center in their classes. Teachers can earn SCECHs or NMU graduate credit for attending. \n  \nPreservice secondary social studies teachers are also invited to the workshop. Johnson said it will be an important learning experience for them to collaborate with current teachers in a meaningful content-specific professional development workshop. \n  \nRick Schaffner from the center will present “Reclaiming Power Through Resilience and Resistance” as part of NMU’s UNITED Conference from 1:15-2:30 p.m. Wednesday\, March 25\, in the Northern Center Ballrooms. \n  \nFounded in 1984\, the Zekelman Center is the only Holocaust museum in Michigan. SUMMARY:Bonnie Loukus : Liminal Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:April 23 – June 10\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, April 23\, 7-8:30pm \nHANCOCK\, Mich. – Existing between different spaces while not fully belonging to one or the other is something many people experience. What does it mean to belong and how do we know when we do belong? Liminal Sanctuaries\, a new exhibition by Michigan artist Bonnie Loukus\, features oil paintings of solitary animals and forest floor ecosystems\, in between reality and some incorporeal place where they exist without human interference. The exhibit opens with a reception at Finlandia Art Gallery on Thursday\, April 23 at 7pm and will be on display through June 10.  \n  \nBonnie Loukus is a Keweenaw-based multidisciplinary artist practicing oil painting\, printmaking\, letterpress\, and book arts. Her work explores themes such as the intrinsic value of animals\, plant diversity\, small ecosystems\, symbolism\, incorporeal life\, and solitude. “Being a multidisciplinary artist\, this focus on painting has been a chance to explore my own liminality through observing animals\, plants\, and fungi to the point of sonder while researching symbolism\, poetry\, and color\,” she said. \n  \nThe paintings in the exhibit transport the viewer into what feels like a different world. “This work is a glimpse into something we won’t quite ever have being human\, with the closest possibility of understanding this only achieved by spending time alone in the natural world\,” Loukus explained. “My hope is that this work also conveys that space between contemplative solitude and the desire to connect.” \n  \nLoukus was born in Laurium\, Michigan. She is a Finlandia University graduate who majored in an interdisciplinary honors program that focused on the connection of arts\, culture\, and the environment. During the brief Upper Michigan summers\, with their long days and good light\, she focuses on painting\, sometimes painting at the family’s Finnish homestead\, overlooking former potato fields and cow pastures where her father now “makes hay.” When the days become short and dark\, she turns her practice to printmaking\, spending the evenings carving linoleum blocks. \n  \nHer work is part of US and international collections and recent artist residencies have taken her to Estonia\, Isle Royale National Park\, and Keweenaw Land Trust’s Silver Island. She is the executive director of the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. Pro Wrestling (UPW) returns to the Marquette Lakeview Arena\, for the biggest wrestling event in the Upper Peninsula’s history! Some big names in wrestling culture and history are on the books this year\, so mark your calendars for April 25\, 2026!  Watch Pro Wrestling Legends during the main event\, and even meet your favorite wrestlers before the event for an additional cost.  \nThe Line-UP: \n  \nMick Foley –  “Hardcore Legend”\, Aka Cactus Jack or Dude Love. For those not familiar\, Mick Foley is a big deal in the wrestling world. He is considered as one of the best wrestlers in the history of professional wrestling\, was a four time world champion\, 11 time tag team champion\, Champion of the inaugural WWF Hardcore Series\, and a former Wrestlemania Headliner. He was voted Time Magazine’s Man of The Year but Time chose Bill Clinton instead as they did not think the vote was warranted (some consider this to be the first “mass trolling” event)\, but is most famous for a controversial cage match against the Undertaker (who was the main feature for a previous Marquette Mania). He’s also faced & shared the stage with icons such as\, the Steiner Brothers (also featured in a previous Marquette Mania)\, Stone Cold Steve Austin\, Executioner\, Rick Flair\, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson\, and Hulk Hogan. Fans of wrestling will not want to miss Marquette Mania IV!  \n  \nPowers of Pain – Made famous during the late 80s Wrestling Circa\, but took off in popularity for their famous feuds during the early 90s. These tag team Champion Winners lead to Pro-Wrestling Illustrated naming this duo in the top 100 Tag Team Wrestlers.   \n  \nAwesome Kong – Known for her success in the Knockouts Division\, was ranked first on the inaugural list of Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s PWI Women’s 100 in 2008\, and was inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame. Awesome Kong\, Aka Kia Michelle Stevens\, is also an actress\, best known for playing Tammé “The Welfare Queen” Dawson\, in the wrestling-themed Netflix original comedy series GLOW. \n  \nDani Mo – Is one of the top female wrestlers taking the ring today with 12 Title Championships under her belt. With a background in Bodybuilding\, Dani Mo is one of the fiercest competitors to watch live in action! Will Dani take another UPW Championship Title in 2026?  \n  \nLeva Bates – Trained by the infamous “Dudley Boyz”\, made appearances with Shimmer Women’s Athletes\, Shine Wrestling\, All Elite\, and WWE NXT. Bates was also featured on Impact Wrestling as a villain who helped to abduct Sting and Hulk Hogan.  \n  \nMelanie Cruise – Best known for appearances in All Elite Wrestling\, Shimmer\, and POWW with 5 Championship Titles! Cruise was ranked 25 of the best 50 single wrestlers\, and won tag team of the year in 2018!   \n  \nMustafa Ali – was made famous during his time with the WWE in the cruiserweight division until 2023 when he returned to the Independent Circuit. Mustafa Ali can be seen today wrestling on TNA Impact! You will not want to miss Ali’s high flying style of wrestling and the famous “imploding 450° splash”. “In Ali We Trust”.  \n Parker Boudreaux – A newer name in WWE and NXT took a small hiatus from the scene to recovery from injury\, but don’t be fooled! Boudreaux is back in action and stronger than ever defeating opponents left and right on the Gleat circuit in Japan. In July 2025\, the Gleat President named him “the greatest fighter in the world”.  \n  \nMadman Fulton – This three time Champion trained at the ASWA Center in Ohio\, and signed with the WWE in 2012. Madman had several years experience crushing skulls before transitioning to Impact Wrestling and TNA where he shined in Ohio Versus Everything.  \n Big Kon – Has been featured in SmackDown\, NXT Tag Team Champions\, WrestleMania\, and competed with Madman Fulton. Big Kon has won 17 Championships throughout his career!  \n  \nMatt Riddle – Riddle made a name for himself by appearing on Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter 7 and went on to hold a four-fight winning streak in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) before pivoting his career to Pro Wrestling with the WWE\, Major League Wrestling\, and Independent Circuits. Riddle holds 28 Title Championships\, ranked 5th in Wrestling Illustrated’s top 10 wrestlers. With Riddle’s UFC training and mixed martial arts styles\, Matt’s matches will be truly something spectacular to watch.  \n  \nSampson – starred on the TruTV original series Hulk Hogan’s Micro Championship Wrestling\, fought the Undertaker in the WWE\, and made appearances on RAW.
