DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Honorable Judge Robert Allen Edgar (Al Edgar)\, a Munising native\, will present a guest Constitution Day lecture at Northern Michigan University titled “The Supreme Court Unhinged: A Retired Federal Judge’s Perspective on the Constitution and the Supreme Court.” The event will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday Sept 17\, in room 2904 of NMU’s Science Building. It is free and open to the public. \nEdgar is a retired federal judge and Vietnam veteran. He was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee by Ronald Reagan. He served as chief judge from 1998-2005 and took senior status in October of 2005. \nEdgar earned his bachelor’s degree at Davison College and graduated from Duke University School of Law. DESCRIPTION:Marquette -Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to host a Feeding America Mobile Food Pantry on Thursday\, September 12. The distribution of food will begin at 10:00am and continue while supplies last or until 11:30am. Food will be available for approximately 550 families. Due to changes with Feeding America West Michigan\, proxy pickup will be limited. This will be a drive-thru event with directions given by parking lot attendants. Guests are asked to remain in their cars and have adequate space prepared in their trunk or back seat in advance to allow the distribution team to place food boxes directly in the vehicle. Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are located at 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey. DESCRIPTION:Percussionist Britton-René Collins\, Grand Prize winner of the 2022 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition and the 2021 Chicago International Music Competition\, will perform at Northern Michigan University as part of the Siril Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Sept. 6. She will also present two additional free events earlier in the day: a music appreciation talk at 11 a.m. and a percussion masterclass at 1 p.m. All will take place in Reynolds Recital Hall. \nTickets for her NMU concert are $12 for the general public and free for youth 18 and under and NMU students. They are available at nmu.universitytickets.com. \nCollins also won the 2020 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition\, receiving the Ambassador Prize for exceptional musicianship and demonstrating an active passion for creating social change through her music. She has dedicated her artistry to shaping an equitable community in which all musicians can thrive. \nIn addition to performing as a soloist in the U.S.\, Canada and Europe\, Collins has made several concerto appearances with ensembles including the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra\, the Valdosta Symphony and the Meridian Symphony. \nShe also enjoys life as a chamber musician with New York City-based Excelsis Percussion Quartet\, and is also the co-founder of Vision Duo alongside violinist Ariel Horowitz. As an advocate for new music\, Britton-René’s current projects involve premiering new compositions and commissions for multi-percussion and marimba. \nRecent highlights include attending the soundSCAPE new music composition and performance exchange in Italy\, making her Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) artist debut\, and participating in the Banff Centre’s Evolution: Classical program. \nCollins began playing piano at age five\, and discovered percussion at eight years old when she became intrigued by the drum set. She quickly fell in love with playing rock\, jazz and pop music on the drums\, which ignited her enthusiasm to explore various percussion instruments and styles of music. \nShe received her bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Toronto\, where she won the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. She received her master’s degree at the University of Michigan in 2023.

DESCRIPTION:UNVEILING OF THE CITY’S NEWEST PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE\n‘Seven Grandfather Teachings’ stone sculpture to be installed in Marquette\, MI \nMarquette\, MI ­- The City of Marquette announces the installation of the ‘Seven Grandfather Teachings’ sculpture by artist Jason Quigno to occur Friday\, September 6th. The sculpture has been commissioned by the City of Marquette Public Art Commission. Quigno\, an Anishinaabe contemporary stone sculptor and tribal citizen of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe\, has carved seven locally quarried boulders to represent each of the Seven Grandfathers and the teachings they offer. The stones will be placed in a circle at the entrance of the recent Spear Dock walking pier renovation in the City’s lower harbor. \nTo celebrate the installation\, several events are planned for Friday\, September 6th: \n\nSculpture Unveiling Ceremony: 5:30-6:30pm\, the community is invited to gather at the installation site and celebrate the addition of the Seven Grandfather Teachings sculpture to the City’s public art collection. Artist Jason Quigno will be present\, and an Honor Song will be performed by the Summer Cloud Singers.\nEvening Performance and Laser Light Show: 8:00 PM\, at Mattson Lower Harbor Park\, Waawiyeyaa (a local Anishinaabe-based rock band)will open the evening’s festivities with original music. At 8:45 PM\, the Big Drum and Teal Lake Singers will perform traditional Ojibwe music. This will be accompanied by a laser light show projected onto the Ore Dock\, produced by Indigenous artists and storytellers in collaboration with Fresh Coast Light Lab. The event is free and open to the public. Families and friends are encouraged to bring their own seating.\n\nThe unveiling events are presented by the City of Marquette with support from Superior Watershed Partnership\, Travel Marquette and the Fresh Coast Light Lab. \nThe ‘Seven Grandfather Teachings’ sculpture will serve as the centerpiece of the new City Shoreline Cultural Trail. This Trail\, honoring our community’s diverse cultural heritage\, will connect key sites along the City’s shoreline. DESCRIPTION:Keep Our Republic and Michiganders for Civic Resilience\, two non-partisan organizations\, have partnered together for a “Northern Michigan Community Conversation Tour\,” which will include stops in Marquette and Escanaba on Aug. 28. The tour\, which is being held Aug. 27-29\, will offer residents a deeper understanding about the elections process and what happens after voters cast their ballots. This a free event for the public. \nFormer Michigan House Democrat Leader Christine Greig and former Michigan Republican Senator and House Representative Tonya Schuitmaker\, both representatives of Michiganders for Civil Resilience\, along with Keep Our Republic representatives\, are hosting conversations in five Northern Michigan communities\, including\, Traverse City\, Alpena and Cheboygan with Kent County Clerk Lisa Posthumus Lyons.
