SUMMARY:The Marquette Regional History Center Presents: A History of the Northern Michigan University Greenwood Nature Center: A Perspective by David Kronk
DESCRIPTION:The Marquette Regional History Center Presents:\nA History of the Northern Michigan University Greenwood Nature Center: A Perspective by David Kronk\nWednesday\, May 28\, 6:30 p.m. at the Marquette Regional History Center\nWest of Ishpeming in the mid-1980s\, environmental education and programming for area schools and the public could be found at the Greenwood Nature Center (GNC). Learn about the history of\, and people behind\, this community resource on the bank of the Greenwood Reservoir near Ishpeming. This presentation and discussion by David Kronk about the forgotten history of the nature center will feature a retrospective of the people\, partnerships\, and vision that brought the GNC to life.\nThe program will highlight the ongoing relevance of outdoor education methods for providing ecological education\, community learning\, and skill development\, and for modeling alternative energy implementation. Done well\, outdoor education provides more than just “nature programs” – it also serves by building community vision and demonstrating innovation.\nThis session will remind us of a lost piece of area history – and will hopefully inspire new leaders interested in re-imagining local outdoor education. Whether you experienced Greenwood Nature Center firsthand as a student\, teacher\, parent\, or principal\, or whether you’re hearing of it now for the first time\, we think you’ll be glad you attended this event! Join us in looking back and imagining forward.\n$5 suggested donation.  For more info visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571.

SUMMARY:NCT Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come hike with us through beautiful hardwood forests and across rugged outcroppings to beautiful Lily Pond with its incredible vistas. The hike begins at the Wetmore Pond parking lot located a half mile north of Sugarloaf on CR550 and heads part way up the South Hogback trail. It then branches off on the Forestville trail to the Lily Pond Spur\, which then brings the hike down to the pond. A short hike onto the bluffs gives spectacular views of Lily Pond full of water lilies. The hike continues over several small outcroppings before returning to the parking lot. \nOur hike will be led by Dennis Fattaleh\, an experienced group hike leader. \nThis loop hike will cover approximately 4 miles of rugged terrain and is an advanced hike. Note that it includes a few steep climbs and some rugged sections and is not recommended for beginners or those with mobility limitations. Proper hiking boots are required. Expect a few wet spots. Plan on 3-4 hours of hiking time. Don’t forget to bring water and a snack! \nWe’ll meet on Saturday\, May 31st at 10:00 AM at the Wetmore Pond parking lot\, a half mile north of Sugarloaf on CR550. As CR550 begins to curve to the right\, look for the guard rail on the left (west) side of the road. The entrance is in front of this guard rail. Please come to the back of the parking lot at the trail head. \nThis event is limited to 12 participants\, and advanced registration is required. Please click here to register. Registration will remain open until Friday\, May 30th or until we reach capacity. \nWe hope to see you there!
