DESCRIPTION:Multi-platinum solo artists Chelsea Cutler and Jeremy Zucker\, who released their new album brent iii today\, will make a stop at Northern Michigan University on their “Brent Forever: The Tour” on Saturday\, Nov. 16. \nThe doors to the Berry Events Center open at 6 p.m. Opener Adam Paddock\, a Nashville-based artist whose discography is described as “the intersection between energetic pop and intimate singer-songwriter\,” takes the stage at 7\, and the headliners will follow at 8. \nCutler and Zucker will perform fan favorites\, including the double-platinum “you were good to me” and the gold-certified “this is how you fall in love\,” alongside music from their newly released album. \nCutler played soccer in college before turning her attention to music. She released her first EP\, Snow in October\, in 2017 and quickly attracted attention with singles like “Your Shirt.” Her indie-pop debut album\, How to Be Human\, came out in 2020 and gained attention with its raw and introspective style. \nZucker was a biology major in college\, making music in his dorm room before deciding to pursue it full time. His breakthrough came with the single “comethru” in 2018\, a song he wrote in response to post-graduation uncertainty. His debut album\, love is not dying\, was released in 2020. \nCutler and Zucker collaborated for the first time in 2018 on the track “better off.” They released their joint EP brent (2019)\, with followups brent ii (2021) and now brent iii. \nNorthern Michigan University Arts and Entertainment is sponsoring the concert in partnership with the Student Finance Committee. \nAdvance tickets for NMU students are $15 for seats and $20 for floor; general public tickets are $25 for seats and $30 for floor. DESCRIPTION:NMUDoIt\, a student theater group established early this year at Northern Michigan University\, will present its first full-length production—the musical The Last Five Years—at 7:30 p.m. Thursday\, Nov. 14 through Saturday\, Nov. 16\, in the Panowski Black Box Theatre. Tickets are free (donations accepted). Written and composed by Drama Desk winner Jason Robert Brown\, The Last Five Years is described as an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their 20s who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. \n“It’s a different approach in that the character Cathy is telling her story backwards from the end of their relationship and Jamie is telling his from the beginning\, tracing it to the end. Their stories only cross in the middle\, when they get married\,” said student director Lia Hielkema. “It premiered in the early 2000s and has continued to be a fan favorite. The show is completely sung through\, and it’s comprised of entirely solos\, except for two duets. It explores what it’s like to be young and in love and not quite yet established.” \nKayleigh Clark\, who played Hope Harcourt in the NMU production of Anything Goes\, will star as Cathy. Liam Fisher\, who recently portrayed Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Show\, will play Jamie. \nThe group’s faculty adviser\, Donna Poirier of the Music Department\, said this student-developed group is a valuable complement to the academic programs and shows offered by NMU Theatre & Dance. \n“I think it’s terrific to allow students these opportunities to really take the helm\,” she said. “They’re ready for the responsibility\, and they’re getting experiences behind the scenes\, like directing\, perhaps a little bit more so than they would with one of our faculty-run mainstage productions. They also are getting a close look at the economics behind theater productions\, and how much time that takes. They’ve done a tremendous job of stepping up to the plate and making sure that their bases are covered. It will be exciting to see initiative and creativity like this on our campus\, and I’m hoping that it will inspire other students across departments.” \n“Northern has had plenty of student productions and there’s another production company running called Fountain Space Theatre Company\, but to my knowledge\, this is the first one completely student-founded and student-funded\,” Hielkema added. “We obtain funding through the Student Finance Committee.” \nHielkema co-founded NMUDoIt with Ryan Zepp and they serve as president and vice president\, respectively. Kendyl Dahlstrom and Madalyn Hasyn are co-production managers. \nThe Last Five Years has been translated into a handful of languages and was named one of TIME Magazine’s ten best shows of 2001. DESCRIPTION:  \nNadine Strossen\, past president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)\, will present “Free Speech and the Crisis of Higher Education: a Conversation with Nadine Strossen” at Northern Michigan University. The event is scheduled from 1-2:40 p.m. Thursday\, Nov. 21\, in 1320 John X. Jamrich Hall. \nA leader at the forefront of constitutional law and civil liberties for decades\, Strossen has testified before Congress on multiple occasions and addressed diverse audiences around the world through media commentary and presentations at more than 500 universities. \nShe was quoted most recently in an Oct. 23 New York Times story related to free speech titled “Professors in Trouble Over Protests Wonder if Academic Freedom Is Dying.” The section she is featured in reads: \n“Academic freedom is not absolute. It does not protect ‘propagating wrongheaded ideas’ in teaching or research\, said Nadine Strossen\, a former head of the American Civil Liberties Union. And it does not put faculty members above the law or above campus rules meant to make sure protests\, whatever their point of view\, do not disrupt learning. But it means that academics are broadly allowed the First Amendment right to express opinions or to speak beyond their area of expertise outside the classroom\, including on social media. Yet that is where many faculty members are getting into trouble\, Ms. Strossen said.” \nStrossen’s written works include HATE: Why We Should Resist it with Free Speech\, Not Censorship and Free Speech: What Everyone Needs to Know. Her 1995 New York Times notable book\, titled Defending Pornography: Free Speech\, Sex\, and the Fight for Women’s Rights\, was recently republished as part of the New York University Press “Classic” series. She also participated in Free to Speak\, a three-part Public Television documentary that examines controversies over free speech across nations and time. \nStrossen is a senior fellow with the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education\, and the John Marsall Harlan II Professor of Law Emerita at New York Law School. She continues to serve on advisory boards for the ACLU\, Academic Freedom Alliance\, National Coalition Against Censorship and other organizations. She was commended for her service to the ACLU by U.S. Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, Antonin Scalia and David Souter. \nNamed one of America’s “most influential lawyers” by the National Law Journal\, Strossen has received many honorary degrees and awards\, namely the American Bar Association’s prestigious Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award (2017) and the National Coalition Against Censorship’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Free Speech (2023). \nHer presentation in Marquette is sponsored by the NMU English Department\, the College of Arts and Sciences\, and Hillel at NMU\, along with Scholars for Peace in the Middle East\, the Telos-Paul Piccone Institute\, and Voices for Liberty. SUMMARY:NMU Jazz Concert
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Northern Michigan University jazz ensembles will present their second concert of the fall season at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Dec. 4\, in Reynolds Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. The concert will feature both the NMU Jazz Band and the NMU Jazz Combo. \nThe NMU Jazz Band  is a standard big band with five saxophones\, four trumpets\, four trombones and a rhythm section. This group will be playing a variety of material\, including standards by Neil Hefti (Cute) and Oscar Pettiford (Blues in the Closet)\, a Beatles tune (Blackbird)\, and a crazy funk tune by saxophonist Jeff Coffin titled The Mad Hatter Rides Again.  Senior Nick Wegrzyn will be featured as a student conductor on Jeff Jarvis’ Critical Mass\, and the whole audience will be encouraged to participate in an arrangement of Take the A Train that the band will put together live on stage. \nThe combo is a sextet this semester\, with three horns and a rhythm section. It will perform a mixture of original compositions and arrangements by the group members.

DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will present a festive new production titled “Home for the Holidays” Thursday through Saturday\, Dec. 5-7 and 12-14 in Forest Roberts Theatre. The show is about a group of NMU students who convene to share tales of their diverse family traditions before they journey home for the holidays. It features musical singing and dance numbers—many familiar—with bits of dialogue to tie it all together. \n“Home can mean a lot of different things to different people\, and the holidays are a momentous time for various reasons\,” said Karina Johnson\, who developed and is directing the production. “Everyone has their own memories\, traditions and family experiences they really love or love to hate. I’ve been wanting to create something like this for a while\, and I tried as much as I could to include some diverse stories as well.” \nAs an example\, Johnson said MJ Opulencia\, a student from the Philippines who hasn’t been home for the holidays in four years\, choreographed a dance that means a great deal to her and reflects her country’s customs. There is also Irish step dancing\, clogging\, tap\, traditional Christmas hymns and classic carols\, and a Sankta Lucia number choreographed by student Abigail Foskuhl. \nJohnson also selected other dance students with previous choreography experience to assist with the production. Don’Tae Mitchell worked on “Grown Up Christmas List” and the Jackson Five’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” Gianna Daprai developed a number that “encapsulates the craziness and chaos that comes from her holiday family dinners\,” and Emma Houston choreographed a song where all of the students are old men tap dancing. \n“It’s a quite an eclectic group\, and they’re all having a great time\,” Johnson added. “It’s been quite a process\, but it’s coming together nicely. I’ve spent the past three to five years thinking of a show like this that I could put together and now it’s finally coming to fruition. I’m grateful I’ve been given this opportunity\, and I hope that people can appreciate it and find their own little stories tied in among all of those we’re telling in this production.” \nBefore the curtain rises on this family-friendly event\, Santa Claus will visit the Forest Roberts Theatre lobby for one hour before each performance. Photos with the jolly old elf are encouraged. \nShowtimes are at 7:30 p.m. throughout the run\, with a 1 p.m. Theatre for All sensory-friendly performance on Saturday\, Dec. 7\, and an additional 1 p.m. matinee on Saturday\, Dec. 14. SUMMARY: FIRST LEGO League Qualifier at NMU
DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University’s Seaborg Center will host its annual FIRST LEGO League Challenge Qualifier on Saturday\, Dec. 7\, in Jamrich Hall. There will be 24 upper elementary teams (about 500 students) competing. Media are welcome to cover this STEM event\, which brings many visitors to campus from the local community and larger central U.P. area. \nThe qualifying tournament begins with an opening ceremony at 9 a.m. Robot matches and judging will follow throughout the day. The event will conclude around 4 p.m. with an awards ceremony to celebrate teams advancing to the state tournament.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Finnish Christmas and Independence on Dec.. 8\n\nA program of music and delicious Finnish food to celebrate Finnish Christmas and Independence Day is planned for Sunday\, December 8\, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Magnuson Hall.  Messiah is located at 305 West Magnetic in Marquette.\n\nAll are welcome to attend.  The program is presented by the Lake Superior Chapter of the Finlandia Foundation National.  President Ron Hill will begin with a short review of how the Finns have celebrated their Independence Day on December 6th since 1917.\n\nMusicial selections will include Oscar Forsman playing his accordion\, Tanja Stanaway leading singing of familiar Finnish carols (words and translations provided!)\, and Maija Niemi will perform on her violin with accompaniement.\n\nThere will be kahvi ja pulla (coffee and cardamom bread)\, kropsua (oven coffee cake) with lingonberries\,and juustoa (Finn cheese) and herring on the table as well.  Members are asked to bring other Finnish specialties for the table.  They need not be homemade.  There will be door prizes\,\n\nMembership in the Chapter is $10 per year per family.  See Membership Chair Tanja Stanaway to pay dues and receive a membership card.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, please call 906-226-7085 or 906-4851971.

There will also be a special visit from Santa Claus. \nDirector Kristen Beth Ludwig said last year’s inaugural Holiday Soirée was such a success that a 2.0 version was planned to close out this semester. Marquette natives and NMU seniors Michael Ahlstrom and John Thomson will return as hosts before they pass the torch to other students\, but the musical numbers and set will be new. \n“We take whatever set remains in the Black Box Theatre from the last play and use that in the soiree\,” Ludwig said. “Last year\, we were fortunate that the play was Clybourne Park\, so the set was a house and easy to use in the context of opening the doors and inviting everyone to join in a holiday party at our home. But this year’s was Frankenstein\, with movable platforms. So we’re working with those for a fun new concept this year. \n“We’ve got some fun new songs that we’ve throw in; some you’ve probably heard before and others you maybe haven’t. A lot of work goes into a one-night-only performance like this\, but such events are actually quite common in the entertainment industry.” \nThe soirée will help NMU Theatre and Dance students defray travel and other costs associated with opportunities to advance their craft. These include auditioning for work they will embark on after graduation\, attending the All-in-One Conference (A1 Conference) in New York\, and participating in a regional festival in Madison that is part of the national Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. \n“The KCACTF is a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet other students from all over the region and compete with them for scholarships\,” Ludwig added. “They also participate in workshops with different industry professionals from all over the country\, and some based internationally. But all of these activities cost extra money on top of the financial commitments required for college itself. These include auditioning for work they will embark on after graduation\, attending the All-in-One Conference (A1 Conference) in New York\, and participating in a regional festival in Madison that is part of the national Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. \n  \n“The KCACTF is a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet other students from all over the region and compete with them for scholarships\,” Ludwig added. “They also participate in workshops with different industry professionals from all over the country\, and some based internationally. But all of these activities cost extra money on top of the financial commitments required for college itself. We just want to create access to these valuable experiences.” \n  \nTickets for the Holiday Soirée are $100 per individual\, or $700 for a table of eight.
