For the 12th year\, our fair will provide a look at archaeology in our region and world-wide. Hands-on learning for all ages. Multiple booths both indoors and outdoors feature various displays and activities.\nThis year\, we have a special presentation at 11:30: “Cosa: Excavations of a ‘Typical’ Latin Colony in Italy” Archaeologist Melissa Ludke will present on the excavation of a Roman bath house. As an archaeological park and small town in Italy\, Cosa has endured a long history of occupation from 273 BCE under the Romans to a small settlement during the Medieval period\, and beyond. Join us at 11:30 to learn about the historical development of a colony that has been excavated since 1948. Ludke’s talk will touch on the history of the site\, the archaeological exploration of various areas in the town\, and ongoing excavations of a Roman bath by Florida State University.. Working at this site since 2016\, Ludke is currently participating in new investigations of a house and potential marketplace. She will present on exciting objects discovered at the site\, including ancient coinage\, which is one of her research specialties.\nJoin the celebration of archaeology and the thrill of discovery! DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University’s Arts Chorale and University Choir will perform their debut concert of the 2024-25 academic year at 3 p.m. Sunday\, Oct. 20\, in Reynolds Recital Hall. Admission is free. \nTwenty-four undergraduate students—primarily music majors—comprise the NMU Arts Chorale. The University Choir is made up of about 40 singers representing various areas of study across campus. \nSelected works are connected by the theme of “fire and ice\,” and include musical pieces based on hot and cold emotion\, such as Katerina Gimon’s Elements\, which is a multi-movement work that uses aleatory vocal techniques\, overtone singing and other effects to represent earth\, air\, fire and water. \n“The connecting theme is hot and cold emotion and how music and art can represent things such as anger\, indifference\, depression\, sadness\, love and lust\,” said Erin Colwitz\, Northern’s director of choirs. \nOther works to be performed at the concert include The Cold Demands a Silence by Stephen Chatman\, Frostbound by Marquette native Thomas LaVoy\, Fire\, Fire by Thomas Morley\, Si Ch’io Vorrei Morire by Claudio Monteverdi\, Hurt by Trent Reznor\, and an arrangement of Stevie Nicks’ Landslide created for NMU by Zach Neufeld.

After successfully producing this cult classic for the past few years\, MÄTI is passing the artistic torch to NMU Theatre and Dance\, which will stage the show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 24 through Saturday\, Oct. 26 in Forest Roberts Theatre\, with later 10:30 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday. \nThe Rocky Horror Show humorously pays homage to B movies from the science fiction and horror genres spanning the 1930s to early 1960s. Intended for mature audiences\, the plot follows a newly engaged couple who\, after being caught in a storm\, find themselves at the mansion of a flamboyant transvestite scientist\, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. There\, they encounter his latest creation\, Rocky—a Frankenstein-like figure who is a fully grown\, physically perfect muscle man with blonde hair and a tan. \n“The Rocky Horror Show has become a beloved tradition under the stewardship of MÄTI\, drawing enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews. We are incredibly grateful to MÄTI for entrusting us with this iconic production\,” said Bill Digneit\, department head of NMU Theatre and Dance. “Our students and faculty are eager to bring new life to the production. After successfully producing this cult classic for the past few years\, MÄTI is passing the artistic torch to NMU Theatre and Dance\, which will stage the show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 24 through Saturday\, Oct. 26 in Forest Roberts Theatre\, with later 10:30 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday. \nThe Rocky Horror Show humorously pays homage to B movies from the science fiction and horror genres spanning the 1930s to early 1960s. Intended for mature audiences\, the plot follows a newly engaged couple who\, after being caught in a storm\, find themselves at the mansion of a flamboyant transvestite scientist\, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. There\, they encounter his latest creation\, Rocky—a Frankenstein-like figure who is a fully grown\, physically perfect muscle man with blonde hair and a tan. \n“The Rocky Horror Show has become a beloved tradition under the stewardship of MÄTI\, drawing enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews. We are incredibly grateful to MÄTI for entrusting us with this iconic production\,” said Bill Digneit\, department head of NMU Theatre and Dance. “Our students and faculty are eager to bring new life to the production. DESCRIPTION:  \nFor more than two centuries\, Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic novel Frankenstein has remained a favorite within the horror fiction genre. Its tale of a scientist’s effort to bring back the dead by carving a new creature from their corpses—only to have his creation turn on him through a series of violent acts—has had an enduring influence on popular culture and spawned many creative adaptations. Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will premiere its version of the stage play\, with opening night appropriately on Halloween. \nSet in the icy polar regions where Victor Frankenstein has chased the creature he brought to life\, NMU’s highly theatrical and emotional production traces Frankenstein’s path to the final confrontation with his intelligent\, articulate\, sensitive and powerfully violent child. \n“That’s how we’re approaching this new adaption—the Creature is being directed to act sort of like a newborn\,” said director Kaitlyn Frotton\, adjunct faculty member and director of the NMU Theatre and Dance box office. “He still looks repulsive\, but I think the issue Victor has with him is less about his appearance and more about how alarming that lifestyle change could be. The intimacy and the responsibility that is now expected from Victor freaks him out a little bit\, and it’s ultimately why he leaves.” \nThe NMU production was adapted by Alastar Dimitrie\, originally for the U.P. Shakespeare Festival he serves as director. He also works at NMU as a senior administrative assistant in the Registrar’s Office. \nFrotton and Dimitrie are not only collaborators on the play\, but life partners. They have acted in and directed numerous productions worldwide\, and first met while attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Their shared experience parenting a 2-year-old son influenced their interpretation of the Creature as infant-like. \nThe couple fine-tuned the script to deviate from Shelley’s novel in a few notable ways. They shared the story more from the Creature’s perspective than the scientist’s; injected more strength and substance into the character of Elizabeth to provide a contemporary audience with a “more obvious feminist feel”; and cut the opening scene when Victor is dying and relays his life story to a passerby who finds him. \n“But what I really loved about that opening was how Victor continually urged the passerby to avoid having too much career ambition because that’s not what’s important in life and won’t lead to true happiness\,” Frotton added. “I found that really moving personally when I revisited the novel because I can relate to the lifestyle change many first-time parents experience. Victor seemed to have a hard time with that when he created a new being. I also felt moved by the Creature’s inextinguishable desire to be loved and seen by his creator even after experiencing heartbreaking abandonment and hate.” \nFrotton warns that the production is best suited for high school ages and older because it will be scary and include some violence. There will also be fog\, strobe lights and other technical elements. \nNMU’s Frankenstein will be staged in the Panowski Black Box Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31-Nov. 2 and Nov. 7-9\, with an additional 1 p.m. matinee Nov. 9. DESCRIPTION:  \nIndigenous artists from across the region will gather at Northern Michigan University to share their perspectives on film\, paintings\, music\, sculpture\, literature and other arts.  The inaugural Indigenous Perspectives Symposium is free to the public and scheduled for Friday\, Nov. 1\, in the Northern Center. \nRegistration is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. by honoring Anishinaabe ways of being\, followed by general sessions and panelists’ discussions until 4 p.m.\, when keynote speaker Jonathan Thunder (Red Lake Ojibwe) presents on his personal journey as an Indigenous artist. \n“We are hosting this event to increase opportunities for creative collaborations across a wide variety of art mediums and presentations\, from traditional to contemporary interpretations by sharing the story of Indigenous arts across NMU’s service area and providing discussion perspectives on impacts to regional diversity and belonging\,” said Shawnrece Butler\, NMU assistant vice president for Diversity and Inclusion. \nThroughout the symposium\, there will be opportunities for attendees to engage with various presenters\, including participating in an Indigenous-focused mural art project. They are also invited to enjoy a decolonized diet lunch that will be available for purchase while listening to Anishinaabe singer-songwriter Helen Roy.  Other notable presenters are: \n\nCaroline LaPorte (Little River Band of Ottawa Indians descendant)\, NMU Department Head of Center for Native American Studies\nWilliam Johnson (Saginaw Chippewa)\, Director\, Ziibiwing Center\nApril Lindala (Grand River Six Nations)\, NMU Center for Native American Studies faculty member\nCandice Dalsing (Mescalero Apache Tribe descendant)\, co-owner of Deer Woman Productions and impact producer on film: “Bring them Home.”\n\nThunder’s art is infused with a blend of his personal lens and real-time world experiences that allows him to use a wide range of mediums. He is known for his surreal paintings\, digitally animated films and art installations in which he addresses subject matter of personal experience and social commentary. \nAt the conclusion of the symposium\, NMU will screen the new Lily Gladstone narrated film; “Bring Them Home/Aiskótáhkapiyaaya\,” from Thunderheart Films and The Redford Center. This film chronicles a decades-long initiative by members of the Blackfoot Confederacy to bring wild buffalo (Blackfeet: iinnii) back to the Blackfeet Reservation. \nA thriving wild buffalo population would not only reconnect Blackfeet with a central part of their heritage\, spirituality and identity\, but would provide economic opportunities and healing for the community. Along the way\, however\, the initiative faces obstacles from ranchers who see the buffalo as a threat to the cattle ranches that dominate the land and are a legacy of colonization. DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University will hold the fourth annual Upper Peninsula Association for Behavior Analysis (UPABA) conference Nov. 7-8. This year’s event focuses on language acquisition strategies and features national speakers\, practical workshops and networking opportunities. The goals of the annual conference are to increase knowledge\, improve client support and collaborate with institutions for effective care across the Great Lakes region. \nThe number of applied behavior analysis providers in the Upper Peninsula has grown significantly over the last decade. Local professionals recognize that high-quality training and resources often require extensive travel and expense. UPABA was established in 2019 with the assistance of a grant from the Superior Health Foundation in recognition of the growing need for local training and resources. Since then\, the organization has provided webinars\, annual conferences\, and parent & caregiver trainings totaling nearly 40 hours of Type 2 CEU’s to more than 70 regional members. \nNMU Professor Jacob Daar is the incoming president of UPABA. The regional non-profit organization is dedicated to supporting the science and profession of behavior analysis through research\, education and practice. To achieve these feats\, the organization facilitates opportunities for professional development\, promoting scientific inquiry and information dissemination\, advocating for policy and best practices and by supporting a collaborative network throughout the Upper Peninsula. \nThe conference event schedule features a keynote presentation\, “From Certification to Treatment Supervision: Considering the Readiness of New BCBAs\,” by Carl Sundberg. DESCRIPTION: Thursday November 7\, 2024. 12:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m.. Peter White Public Library Youth Services. Youth of all ages\, drop by the library for this special schools’ out day! Crafts and activities available for drop-in participation between 12pm-5pm. There will be Bubble Wrap Painting\, Thanksgiving cards and more going on in the Youth Services Room. The film “Wish” will begin at 12:45pm in the Community Room – Kids are welcome to bring lunch or snacks for the movie. Kids under the age of 8 must have an adult present with them in the event. SUMMARY:'Refugee Voices of Resilience Event' at NMU
DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University will host a public panel presentation titled “Refugee Voices of Resilience” on Thursday\, Nov. 7. Former refugees and migrants who now serve in government\, humanitarian and educational roles will share their journeys to where they are today\, highlighting their work in supporting vulnerable communities and giving back. \nThe event is scheduled from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday\, Nov. 7\, in the Seaborg Center Auditorium (room 2701 of The Science Building). Panelists include Dilli Gautam\, who works with the Office of Global Michigan\, contributing to statewide initiatives that support immigrant and refugee communities; Anna Kovalenko and Shukurani Nsengiyumva\, who each play an active role in addressing community needs and fostering support networks; and Mlado Ivanovic\, an NMU philosophy professor whose dramatic experience as a 13-year-old refugee during the Bosnian war heavily influenced his career path and involvement in humanitarian projects. \n“This event demonstrates how the journey from vulnerability to empowerment is not only possible\, but also essential to strengthening our communities\,” Ivanovic said. “Our hope is that these stories inspire dialogue\, understanding\, and perhaps even a commitment to advocacy among those who attend\, showing how personal transformation can spark wider social change.” \nThree of the panelists—Gautam\, Kovalenko and Ivanovic—serve as commissioners in the Michigan Immigrant and Refugee Council (MIARC)\, a state body dedicated to bridging the gap between legislators and immigrant and refugee communities. They will highlight government efforts to unite diverse communities\, which “is especially significant in a region like Marquette\, which is somewhat removed from Michigan’s primary migratory and resettlement patterns\,” Ivanovic said. \nThe event will also provide NMU students with meaningful engagement opportunities. The NMU chapter of Refugee Outreach Collective: Humanitas is actively facilitating the panel. \n“As the NMU branch of the non-governmental organization (NGO) I direct\, this student-led chapter allows students not only to gain valuable experience in organizing and facilitating events\, but also to immerse themselves in the storytelling process and interact firsthand with our panelists\,” Ivanovic added. “This experience will extend beyond the event itself\, as the storytelling session will be followed by an exhibit that highlights the experiences of displaced people\, offering students and attendees further insights into these powerful narratives.” \nRead an October 2021 feature story on Ivanovic’s path from Bosnia to NMU here.

SUMMARY:Finding Nemo Jr
DESCRIPTION:Disney and Pixar’s Finding Nemo JR. is playing at the Forest Roberts Theatre from Thursday\, November 7th through Sunday\, November 10th. The charming 60-minute musical\, designed for middle school-aged performers\, is based on the beloved 2003 Pixar film Finding Nemo. SAY Theater’s 8th grade and under cast includes over 60 students. \n“We are thrilled to dive into the big blue world of Disney and Pixar’s Finding Nemo JR!” said Becky Heldt\, SAY Theater’s Executive Director “This production is full of fun and great music for the whole family\, we are excited to share this heartwarming tale with our community”. \n  \nThis new stage musical is a 60-minute adaptation of the beloved 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo\, with new music by award-winning songwriting team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Marlin (Grant Ottaway)\, an anxious and over-protective clownfish\, lives in the Great Barrier Reef with his kid Nemo (Greenlea Oja)\, who longs to explore the world beyond their anemone home. But when Nemo is captured and taken to Sydney\, Marlin faces his fears and sets off on an epic adventure across the ocean. With the help of lovable characters such as optimistic Dory (Ellia Marquardson)\, laid-back sea turtle Crush (Olivia Niemi\, and the supportive Tank Gang\, Marlin and Nemo both overcome challenges on their journey to find each other and themselves.
