DESCRIPTION:Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to host a Mobile Food Pantry. Taking place on Thursday\, April 10. Food distribution will begin at 10:00am and continue while supplies last or until 11:30am. Food will be available for approximately 550 families. Due to changes with Feeding America West Michigan\, proxy pickup will be limited. This will be a drive-thru event with directions given by parking lot attendants. Guests are asked to remain in their cars and have adequate space prepared in their trunk or back seat in advance to allow the distribution team to place food boxes directly in the vehicle. Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are located at 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey. Businesses or organizations that are interested in supporting these monthly mobile food pantries are encouraged to call 906.249.1715 for more information.

SUMMARY:NMU Presents "Jesus Christ Superstar"
DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will present its adaptation of the iconic rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar\,” the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice produced for the professional stage more than 50 years ago. Show dates are Thursday-Saturday\, April 10-12 and 17-19 in Forest Roberts Theatre. \nThe story of the last week of Jesus’ life is told entirely through song. While based loosely on historical accounts from the Bible\, co-directors Paul Truckey and Keli Crawford-Truckey say the themes addressed through depictions of the characters’ personal relationships and struggles are timeless\, and relevant to diverse audiences. \n“Obviously the rock-and-roll music is awesome\, and presents the Passion of the Christ in more of a modern context\, but the play really strikes a chord because it focuses on the humanness of Jesus–the temptations he faced\, for example–not his divinity\,” said Paul. “Some people called it blasphemy when it first came out. But they changed their minds when they saw the show because they could connect with the human part of who this person was\, as well as others. [Pontius] Pilate is typically thought of as this evil character\, but there’s more than meets the eye. He gets swayed by the crowds turning on Jesus and his own fears\, but he actually has a very tender moment when he goes down to Jesus and says\, ‘Look\, just talk to me.’” \n“People immediately associate the name Judas with traitor\, but the play sympathizes a bit more with his struggle\,” Keli added. “He’s constantly weighing and battling his conscience over what he thinks is right. That’s a daily human trial. Many in the crowd are the same way. They’re incredibly devout\, then they’re incredibly fickle and turn on Jesus. Internal turmoil and relationship issues are things we all deal with as part of the human experience.” \nRather than the standard setting of Jerusalem\, Northern’s production takes place in a “desolate\, dry desert wasteland that was once Las Vegas\,” Keli’s home city. She was inspired by the similarities she discovered in the song lyrics and storyline. \n“I think it’s boring when it’s kept the way it’s always been done with Mary wearing Birkenstocks and a sundress in the desert\,” she said. “I started thinking of the Mojave Desert near Vegas. And then I listened to the lyrics closely\, and there’s a lot of rolling of the dice\, risk-taking and gambling terms. [The high priests] Caiaphas and Annas kind of reminded me of the people in the little bubble in the ceiling at casinos\, monitoring all the tables below to make sure no one’s cheating and they’re profiting. There are parallels everywhere. So it’s a different approach to this production\, but it’s fun.” \nCast members include Marquette native and Forest Roberts Theatre veteran John Thomson as Judas\, Asa Naigus as Jesus and Hannah Johnson as Mary Magdalene. \n“I think people are going to be stunned by the amount of talent in this production\,” Paul said. “The cast has been wonderful to work with. They’ve been really innovative and collaborative\, helping us to create special moments on stage. It demonstrates the reality of the whole new level we’re operating at now\, with the BFA in musical theater program. He gets swayed by the crowds turning on Jesus and his own fears\, but he actually has a very tender moment when he goes down to Jesus and says\, ‘Look\, just talk to me.’” \n“People immediately associate the name Judas with traitor\, but the play sympathizes a bit more with his struggle\,” Keli added. “He’s constantly weighing and battling his conscience over what he thinks is right. That’s a daily human trial. Many in the crowd are the same way. They’re incredibly devout\, then they’re incredibly fickle and turn on Jesus. Internal turmoil and relationship issues are things we all deal with as part of the human experience.” \nRather than the standard setting of Jerusalem\, Northern’s production takes place in a “desolate\, dry desert wasteland that was once Las Vegas\,” Keli’s home city. She was inspired by the similarities she discovered in the song lyrics and storyline. \n“I think it’s boring when it’s kept the way it’s always been done with Mary wearing Birkenstocks and a sundress in the desert\,” she said. “I started thinking of the Mojave Desert near Vegas. And then I listened to the lyrics closely\, and there’s a lot of rolling of the dice\, risk-taking and gambling terms. [The high priests] Caiaphas and Annas kind of reminded me of the people in the little bubble in the ceiling at casinos\, monitoring all the tables below to make sure no one’s cheating and they’re profiting. There are parallels everywhere. DESCRIPTION:St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Marquette will host a benefit concert featuring local artists and choral groups on Sunday\, April 13th at 3:00 pm at the church at 201 East Ridge Street in Marquette.   The concert is a kickoff event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of St. Paul’s sanctuary building.  The concert was originally scheduled for Sunday March 30th\, but was rescheduled due to a snowstorm that day. \n\nAdmission will be free and donations will be accepted.  All donations will benefit St. Paul’s Building Restoration fund as the church seeks to match the grant it received from the National Fund for Sacred Places.   The NFSP grant will help St. Paul’s address urgent structural needs\, ensuring its continued role as a gathering place for worship\, outreach\, and community activities into the next 150 years.

SUMMARY:National Poetry Month Readings at the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library
DESCRIPTION:(ISHPEMING\, MI) – Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996\, National Poetry Month is a special occasion that celebrates poets and poetry! We are excited to bring this celebration to the Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library by hosting two poetry readings on back-to-back evenings.  \nThe first poetry reading will be on Wednesday\, April 16th at 5:30pm\, and it will feature local poets\, Troy Graham and U.P. Poet Laureate\, Beverly Matherne. This poetry performance will open with Troy Graham reading newly released poems followed by ’23-’24 U.P. Poet Laureate\, Beverly Matherne’s performance of original poetry. Beverly Matherne is the author of seven bilingual books of poetry in French and English. Her latest\, from Harvard Square Press\, Love Potions\, Teas\, Incantations\, is a collection inspired by paintings. She is currently completing a collection of haiku\, a tribute to the Upper Peninsula. Troy Graham is a Marquette area singer-songwriter\, performer and poet. He has self-published several books independently and in collective poetry groups. He has instructed dozens of interactive writing workshops for youth in schools\, libraries and colleges. \nThe second event is on Thursday\, April 17th at 5:30pm\, and it will feature local poet\, Kathleen M. Heideman and her new collection\, The Caving Grounds. “Through poetry and historic research\, ‘The Caving Grounds’ excavates the rubble of Negaunee\, a small town in Upper Michigan hollowed by a century of mining. The extraction of hematite caused underground collapses and sinkholes; undermined neighborhoods were deemed unstable; homes\, churches and even cemeteries were moved\, and dangerous areas fenced. Thankfully\, a guide will emerge: Rusty.”

DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will present its adaptation of the iconic rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar\,” the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice produced for the professional stage more than 50 years ago. Show dates are Thursday-Saturday\, April 10-12 and 17-19 in Forest Roberts Theatre. \nThe story of the last week of Jesus’ life is told entirely through song. While based loosely on historical accounts from the Bible\, co-directors Paul Truckey and Keli Crawford-Truckey say the themes addressed through depictions of the characters’ personal relationships and struggles are timeless\, and relevant to diverse audiences. \n“Obviously the rock-and-roll music is awesome\, and presents the Passion of the Christ in more of a modern context\, but the play really strikes a chord because it focuses on the humanness of Jesus–the temptations he faced\, for example–not his divinity\,” said Paul. “Some people called it blasphemy when it first came out. But they changed their minds when they saw the show because they could connect with the human part of who this person was\, as well as others. [Pontius] Pilate is typically thought of as this evil character\, but there’s more than meets the eye. He gets swayed by the crowds turning on Jesus and his own fears\, but he actually has a very tender moment when he goes down to Jesus and says\, ‘Look\, just talk to me.’” \n“People immediately associate the name Judas with traitor\, but the play sympathizes a bit more with his struggle\,” Keli added. “He’s constantly weighing and battling his conscience over what he thinks is right. That’s a daily human trial. Many in the crowd are the same way. They’re incredibly devout\, then they’re incredibly fickle and turn on Jesus. Internal turmoil and relationship issues are things we all deal with as part of the human experience.” \nRather than the standard setting of Jerusalem\, Northern’s production takes place in a “desolate\, dry desert wasteland that was once Las Vegas\,” Keli’s home city. She was inspired by the similarities she discovered in the song lyrics and storyline. \n“I think it’s boring when it’s kept the way it’s always been done with Mary wearing Birkenstocks and a sundress in the desert\,” she said. “I started thinking of the Mojave Desert near Vegas. And then I listened to the lyrics closely\, and there’s a lot of rolling of the dice\, risk-taking and gambling terms. [The high priests] Caiaphas and Annas kind of reminded me of the people in the little bubble in the ceiling at casinos\, monitoring all the tables below to make sure no one’s cheating and they’re profiting. There are parallels everywhere. So it’s a different approach to this production\, but it’s fun.” \nCast members include Marquette native and Forest Roberts Theatre veteran John Thomson as Judas\, Asa Naigus as Jesus and Hannah Johnson as Mary Magdalene. \n“I think people are going to be stunned by the amount of talent in this production\,” Paul said. “The cast has been wonderful to work with. They’ve been really innovative and collaborative\, helping us to create special moments on stage. SUMMARY:Trio of Outdoor Industry Business Innovators to Give Public Talk at NMU
DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University’s master’s degree program in Administration of Outdoor Recreation and Nature-Based Tourism has invited three related business-oriented innovators to campus for a public presentation: keynote speaker Bob Jacquart\, owner of Stormy Kromer and Copper Peak; Joe Thiel from Innovate Marquette; and Phil Britton from the Outdoor Recreation Innovation Action Network (ORIAN). The free event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Friday\, April 18\, in Northern Center Peninsula II. \nJacquart will talk about positive leadership in the industry in a challenging financial environment. Thiel will talk about future impacts of electrification and mobility on the outdoor recreation industry. Britton will speak about ORIAN\, a project to bring outdoor recreation product development and manufacturing to the central Upper Peninsula to diversify its economy. \nEach year\, the students in NMU’s online master’s degree program come to campus for a three-day seminar. They end the seminar with a public event and invite speakers to participate. \nThe Administration of Outdoor Recreation and Nature-Based Tourism (AORNBT) program is for a wide range of people who would like to work at an administrative level in the field of recreation\, outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism. Peter White Public Library is working in partnership with the UPCI to bring the Marquette community authoritative and up-to-date information about computer and internet safety in our new program series “Cyber Clinic”. Cyber Clinic: Artificial Intelligence will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the basics of AI and how to navigate an online world where AI is increasingly prevalent. DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University will host the 2025 Great Lakes Cannabis Collaboration Conference from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday\, April 22\, at the Northern Center. The event will showcase developing trends in cannabis education and research\, featuring insights from industry leaders and experts at the forefront of the evolving sector. The schedule includes speakers\, an NMU alumni panel discussion\, a networking lunch and student oral presentations/research posters. \nThe conference aims to foster progress in cannabis education and scholarship through open dialogue\, the exchange of information and ideas\, and the celebration of student and faculty achievements. \nPresentations include: “Deciphering the Complex Phytochemistry of Cannabis: From Plant to Extracts\,” by Iain W. H. Oswald\, director of Research and Development at Abstrax Tech; “The Socioeconomic Benefits of Cannabis Opt-in Within a Municipality\,” by the City of Detroit’s Office of Cannabis Affairs; “The Present and Future of Cannabis Regulations in Michigan\, featuring Brian Hanna\, executive director of Michigan’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency; and “Social Equity in Motion: From Policy to Profits\,” by Jess Jackson\, director of social equity in Minnesota’s Office of Cannabis Management and a member of the Board of Directors for the Redemption Foundation. \nAn NMU alumni panel will feature five confirmed speakers: Ishani Sharma\, a cannabis research student; Morgan Naumann\, retail director and cultivation supervisor at Boreal Cannabis; Christopher Aguilar\, team lead at Higher Love Cannabis Co. and owner of Transparent Farms; Sam Frishman\, assistant head grower at High Society; and Samuel Hummel\, propagation/small veg team member at Higher Love Cannabis Co. \nThe community is invited to a post-conference presentation titled “The Science of Scent: Exploring Cannabis’s Complex Aromatic Influences” by cannabis research scientist Twinke Paryani\, who will be a guest speaker in Professor Alex Wilson’s medicinal plant chemistry seminar. The talk is scheduled from 5-5:50 p.m. Wednesday\, April 23\, in The Science Building 2904. \nNMU’s Medicinal Plant Chemistry program\, launched in fall 2017\, was the first four-year undergraduate degree of its kind. DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University will host Career Day for about 1\,000 students from more than 20 high schools across the Upper Peninsula on Wednesday\, April 23. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Northern Center. Students will have an opportunity to chat about career and educational opportunities with representatives of 45 participating employers and many of NMU’s academic departments. \nAlmost half of the students will spend extra time on campus taking tours of Northern through the Campus Visit Office. Career Day is a partnership between NMU (the offices of Student Success\, Career Services and Admissions) and UP Michigan Works.
