DESCRIPTION:Please come learn more about the plans under consideration for a new county jail in Houghton County.  \n\nTwo Public Educational Meetings to Discuss Jail Plans \n  \nHoughton \nWhen?  Wednesday April 2\, 2025\, 6pm-7:45pm \nWhere? Portage Lake District Library Community Room \nWho’s speaking? Faith Morrison\, League of Women Voters of the Copper Country along with the chair of the Houghton County Board of Commissioners\, Tom Tikkanen and Sheriff Josh Saaranen.  (There may be an additional commissioner as well\, TBD) \nWho’s sponsoring?  The League of Women Voters of the Copper Country \n\nHancock \nWhen?  Monday April 7\, 2025\, 6pm-7:45pm \nWhere? 5th and Elm Coffeehouse\, 426 Quincy St\, Hancock \nWho’s speaking? Same as above \nWho’s sponsoring?  Same as above \n\nFaith Morrison\, co-president of the LWVCC\, is a member of the large committee of community members and court/county stakeholders that has been working with the jail-designing experts from AbonmarcheByce and Securitechture who are designing the jail project.  The AbonmarcheByce and Securitecture team has completed more than twenty corrections projects in the U.P.\, including the design of the Delta County Jail (completed in 2018). \n\nThe proposed plans for the HoCo Jail will be formally presented to the Houghton County Board for discussion at their special meeting on April 15\, 2025 at 10am in the courtroom in the Houghton County Courthouse (open to the public; virtual attendance by Microsoft Teams link that will be in the agenda posted on the County’s website). \n\nThe educational meetings on April 2 (Houghton) and April 7 (Hancock) are intended to provide an atmosphere in which members of the community can see the plans\, ask questions\, and generally learn more about the proposed project and its costs in advance of attending the April 15 County Board meeting. \n\nThose that cannot attend the County Board meeting on April 15 and all others may email their questions directly to the commissioners (emails are on the County website). \n\nThe League team is open to presenting their materials at other meetings in the county; please contact us to arrange. \n\nThe proposed plans for the jail project are posted on the County’s website.  Please click on this URL: \nhttps://www.houghtoncounty.net/news-view.php?target=311 \nDirect URL:\nhttps://www.houghtoncounty.net/pictorials/311.pdf
