DESCRIPTION:Middle schoolers invited to Heads UP\, July 21 in Hancock\nCopper Shores Community Health Foundation has partnered with UP Health System – Portage for Heads UP – a Youth Wellbeing Event\, an exciting day of food\, fun and fitness for students entering grades five through eight. Heads UP is on Tuesday\, July 21\, 2026\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Quincy Green in Hancock. \n  \nLocal students are invited to join health professionals in healthful\, engaging activities designed to inspire and educate young minds. \n  \n“This event introduces kids to tools that support long-term physical and mental health\,” said Angela Luskin\, UP Health System – Portage community health coordinator. “With access to approachable\, judgment-free wellness\, kids are more likely to build trust\, develop healthy habits and seek support when they need it.” \n  \nHeads UP has something for everyone\, including hands-on activities\, games\, a recipe competition\, team challenges and more. Each topic featured during the event highlights a variety of ways for attendees to experience healthful habits. \n  \n“We intentionally designed Heads UP to mirror what current research shows us about successful habit formation\,” Copper Shores Community Health Educator Meghan Jaszczak\, RD\, said. “Habits should be tailored to our individual preferences\, and ultimately need to be enjoyable to last!” \n  \nRegistration is now open\nHeads UP is free to attend\, registration closes Monday\, July 20. Students must be registered by a parent or guardian by visiting coppershores.org. This event takes place outside\, attendees are encouraged to wear layers and bring a water bottle.

SUMMARY:Copper Country Community Band Benefit Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Copper Country Community Band (CCCB) is rallying the community for a deeply personal cause. On Monday\, July 13th\, at 7:30 PM\, the band will host a benefit concert at the historic Calumet Theatre to support one of its founding members\, Bill “Benji” Brotherton\, and his wife\, Annie\, as they navigate a challenging health crisis. \n  \nFor over half a century\, Benji Brotherton has been a cornerstone of the local music scene. A trumpet player whose roots date back to the original Calumet Community Band in the 1970s\, Benji has lent his talents\, logistical skills\, and time to nearly every musical group in the area. Known as the “first to arrive and last to leave\,” he has spent decades hauling heavy equipment\, setting up chairs\, and giving rides to fellow musicians—all while working full-time as a dedicated nurse for 40 years and raising his children. \n  \nBenji’s legacy of generosity spans decades\, from organizing post-prom karaoke parties for local schools to fundraising for the New Orleans Humane Society after Hurricane Katrina. Today\, his musical legacy continues through his children\, including daughters Aili (trumpet) and Maggie (tuba)\, who frequently perform alongside him in the CCCB. \n  \nIn March\, the Brotherton family faced a devastating blow when Benji’s wife\, Annie—also a beloved area nurse of 40 years—was diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis forced her to leave the job she loved to undergo immediate\, aggressive treatment\, placing an unexpected emotional and financial strain on the family. \n“Benji has spent his entire life stepping up for the Copper Country\, always the first to volunteer when someone else is in need\, and now it’s our turn to help them through this incredibly difficult time\,” said Amy Johnson\, co-director of the band. Micah Erickson\, the CCCB’s other co-director added\, “We are honored to provide support for Annie and Benji. Music plays such a vital role in our community\, such as bringing people together to support one another\, especially when it is a time of need for someone who has served our community for as long as they have.” \n  \nThe concert will feature a vibrant selection of community band favorites. Admission to the event is by free-will donation at the door. For those unable to attend but wishing to support the family\, direct donations can be made online through their GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/f/community-support-for-annie-and-benji-brotherton\, and QR codes linking to the fundraiser will be available at the theater. \n  \nCome out to the Calumet Theatre on Monday\, July 13th at 7:30 PM to celebrate a lifetime of community service and music\, and to support two of the Copper Country’s most dedicated caretakers.
