SUMMARY:Houghton - QPR Training
DESCRIPTION:Copper Shores Outreach & Education is hosting free QPR Training on Thursday\, October 17\, 2024\, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The event is free\, will last about 90 minutes and is open to anyone in the community over the age of 16. \n  \n“Those who complete the training will be able to recognize warning signs of suicide\, know how to offer hope\, and know how to get help and potentially save a life\,” Copper Shores Outreach & Education Prevention Coordinator Lisa Simpson said. \n  \nAbout QPR\nThe training is called Question\, Persuade\, and Refer (QPR). Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year\, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question\, persuade and refer someone to help. \n  \nThe QPR training will teach people to be a “gatekeeper.” According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001)\, a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. \n  \nGatekeepers can be anyone\, but include parents\, friends\, neighbors\, teachers\, ministers\, doctors\, nurses\, office supervisors\, squad leaders\, foremen\, police officers\, advisors\, caseworkers\, firefighters\, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide. \n  \n“We hope everyone in our community will consider joining us for this training\,” Simpson said. “You never know who might need your help.” \n  \nRSVP\nThere is a limited number of seat for this training. If demand is high\, additional QPR sessions can be added. Light refreshments will be served. \n  \nAn RSVP is required. To RSVP or learn more about the opportunity\, email lsimpson@coppershores.org or call 1 (906) 523-5920 ext. 2062. Visit coppershores.org/qpr-training to learn more about the training.

SUMMARY:Hancock - UPPCO to Host Energy Transition Open House
DESCRIPTION:Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) will host two open house events to demonstrate how it plans to meet Michigan’s new clean energy standards. At these events\, UPPCO will provide an update on the company’s current renewable generation projects and walk guests through its Integrated Resource Plan\, or IRP. An IRP is a comprehensive plan which outlines an electric utility’s future electric generation resource strategy. An IRP seeks to answer the question of\nhow an electric utility may provide reliable\, cost-effective electric service to its customers over the next twenty (20) years while addressing various risks and uncertainties. \nThe Energy Transition Open Houses will be held at two locations from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Eastern Standard Time on the following dates: \nOctober 22: River Rock Lanes\, 1011 N Rd.\, Ishpeming\, MI\nOctober 23: Finnish American Heritage Center\, 435 Quincy St.\, Hancock\, MI \n  \nAccording to Dan Freeborn\, UPPCO’s Manager of Communications and External Affairs\, “Beginning at 6:00 P.M.\, there will be a short presentation that will outline Michigan’s current energy legislation\, UPPCO’s currently planned solar projects\, and a review of our upcoming IRP efforts. Immediately following the presentation\, guests can visit with representatives from UPPCO’s Customer Service\, Energy Efficiency\, Resource Planning and Regulatory departments. These events will allow us to work closely with our customers and stakeholders as we develop an IRP that enables us to deliver safe and reliable electric service while complying with Michigan’s clean energy standards.” \nFor more information about the Energy Transition Open House Events and UPPCO’s IRP\, please visit\nwww.uppco.com/energy-transition.

SUMMARY:Hancock - Haunted Hoist House: Fears and Phobias for You
DESCRIPTION:Face your fears and phobias in the Quincy Mine Haunted Hoist House this weekend. Michigan Tech University’s Theatre Department is curating lights\,\nsounds and animations to resurrect the Halloween spirit of the Keweenaw. Instead of relying on traditional haunted house themes\, this event focuses on evoking unsettling sensations through creepy elements like clowns\, mannequins and other dolls – and eerie visuals. Visitors will travel through dimly lit\, spooky themed sections\, encountering unsettling sounds\, and multiple automated effects that will heighten the scare factor. It’s a unique way to see the mine\, taking you through closed off areas you wouldn’t see on a normal tour. \n  \nThe Haunted Hoist House experience opens this Thursday\, Oct. 24 through Saturday\, Oct. 26 from 7-10:30 p.m. All ages are welcome\, but young children should have adult supervision and adults should be mindful of the event’s theme. \n  \nThe journey begins at the Quincy Mine’s gift shop/visitor center just off US-41 at the flashing light by Peterson’s Fish Market. Folks will purchase tickets here before winding into the spinetingling hallways of the Hoist House. The event is also a hands-on opportunity for Michigan Tech students to practice and refine their craftmanship and technical skills. Students get to push their creative boundaries to organize the haunted mine further each year.

SUMMARY:Hancock - Girls Hockey Powerskating Clinic
DESCRIPTION:The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association (CCJHA) is hosting a Girls Hockey Powerskating Clinic on Oct. 25 and 26. The clinic is geared toward\nyoung women from 8U through 19U. It is lead by Former Harvard Women’s Hockey Player and Captain Dr. Colleen Linehan. The action takes place at the HoCo\nArena in the Houghton County Fairgrounds. \n  \nLinehan has coached Powerskating for over 20 years\, was Team Captain at Harvard and co-coached with the Mid-Michigan Alliance Girls Varsity Hockey Team.\nGirls will need to be registered with USA Hockey and should already know how to skate. The clinic will help young athletes improve their skills and be more confident on the ice. \n  \n“Girls Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States\,” said Amy Blake\, with CCJHA. “The CCJHA has a 40-year history of girls hockey teams\, and it’s awesome to see girls hockey growing up here in the U.P. and starting to gain more attention as it gains popularity around the world. The CCJHA hopes to keep building its program\, adding more opportunities for girls’ hockey.” \n  \nThe event is free to young female athletes\, but they must be registered with USA Hockey. USA Hockey registration and the Powerskating clinic are paid for by the David Wiitanen and Slim McLean Memorial Youth Hockey Fund. Known locally as the “HoCo Arena”\, the venue was constructed in 1972 in Hancock and is where the Hancock Bulldogs play home games on ice. You can find out more information about the clinic and the CCJHA at ccjha.org.

SUMMARY:Houghton - Infant Feeding Fundamental Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Copper Shores Community Health Foundation is excited to announce a new workshop for parents of children aged 6-to-12 months. Building Blocks is set to take place on Saturday\, November 2\, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Alumni Lounge in the Memorial Union Building (MUB) on Michigan Technological University’s campus. Building Blocks is done in partnership with UP Health System – Portage\, giving parents the opportunity to get support designed for their infants during these crucial early months. \n  \nJoin Copper Shores for a morning filled with valuable information and interactive activities led by an experienced team of health professionals. The presenters include Bethany Frantti\, MS\, CCC-SLP\, Elizabeth Miller\, OTR/L\, Monica Aho\, pediatric PT\, Taylor Paul\, RDN\, Meghan Jaszczak\, RD\, Sarah Bodine\, SLP\, and Michael Verive\, MD. They will share insights on a range of topics to help parents navigate the joys and challenges of feeding an infant. \n  \nTopics include\n\nPosture while eating\nFine motor skill development\nBaby-led weaning\nIntroducing allergens\nRecommended tools\nMoney saving tricks\nHow to make mealtime fun\nMore!\n\n“The blessing and the curse of the time we are living in is that you can look up anything at your fingertips\,” said Jaszczak. “It’s difficult to know what is evidence-based and what’s not. It can feel really confusing because a lot of the information out there is directly contradictory.” \n  \nThe workshop is intended to help parents navigate the overload of information and products available\, and help build up a foundation of guidelines that generally work well for children. Parents will get to see firsthand how to properly adjust a high chair for their child’s specific needs\, learn about money-saving products and tools for proper oral development\, and take home confidence that they are setting up their child for proper development. \n  \n“Because it’s your kid\, it’s a hyper-personal\, hyper-emotional topic\,” said Jaszczak\, mother to an energetic three year old. “The territory of 6-to-12 months is such a vulnerable time because you’re introducing so many foods for the first time. Things like breastfeeding and introducing solid food may seem like they should come naturally\, but you’re learning and the baby is learning. We can show you how to teach your child the skills that will set them up for success.” \n  \nBuilding Blocks is free to attend\, but requires registration to ensure an accurate headcount for meals. Parents are encouraged to bring their children aged 12 months or younger; those with older children should arrange for childcare. \n  \nEvent details\nDoors will open for the event at 9:15 a.m.\, and start with a breakfast before a full schedule of events and appropriate breaks. This event is a great opportunity to enjoy some food and connect with other parents. Free parking will be available. \nThe workshop has a limited number of seats available for adult participants. Registration is available on the Copper Shores website and closes on Friday\, October 25. For more information\, contact Meghan Jaszczak at mjaszczak@coppershores.org or by calling 1 (906) 523-5920 ext. 2007.
