Maintained by dedicated volunteers\, the rink provides daily access for skating and hockey during winter and serves as a versatile venue for community events in the off-season. \n  \nLaunched in Fall 2023 as a special project through the Keweenaw Community Foundation\, the Outdoor Recreation for All – Build the Boards Project addressed the unsafe and deteriorating condition of the Ahmeek Ice Rink’s boards\, which had suffered years of wear due to harsh Keweenaw winters. Thanks to the generosity of over 100 donors\, including residents\, businesses\, and charitable foundations\, the rink has been revitalized\, ensuring its use for skating\, hockey\, and community activities for decades. This renovation reflects the community’s unwavering commitment to preserving and enhancing this vital recreational space.

SUMMARY:Houghton - Michigan Tech's Winter Carnival
DESCRIPTION:Fireworks Over Ice! Dive into the Magic of Houghton’s Winter Carnival \nTHE KEWEENAW\, Michigan (Jan. 15\, 2024) — Winter isn’t just endured in the Keweenaw – it’s celebrated\, sculpted and spun into pure magic. For 102 years\, Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival has transformed the snowy campus into a wonderland of jaw-dropping snow art\, thrilling winter sports and community warmth. From Feb. 5-8\, 2025\, locals\, visitors and MTU alumni will make their way down the main streets of Houghton and Hancock to marvel at towering ice sculptures. Don’t forget to cozy up or get a bite to eat at local favorites like the KBC\, The Ambassador or Gino’s in Hancock to thaw out along the way. Winter Carnival is a one-of-a-kind celebration you won’t want to miss this winter. With heavy snowfall pushing through winter so far\, Winter Carnival has potential to get big snow. \n\nStudents play Broomball like the Harry Potter movies on campus\, the community marvels at giant ice sculptures and folks take time to warm up between activities. Winter Carnival is when the Portage Canal’s social hubs of Houghton and Hancock are lively and bustling with life. From the infamous “all-nighter” where students stay up two days to finish their snow statues before judging\, to the zany games that take place on campus\, Winter Carnival brings a whopping schedule to the Michigan Tech community. For most of the public\, it’s about seeing the statues and being in Houghton with loved ones during this magical time. For some\, it’s their favorite time of year to make a trip back to their alma mater. \n\nSnow Statues: Fraternities\, sororities and other campus organizations build larger than life snow statues that are judged each year. The giant creations rival the size of some students’ housing and offer a way for students to showcase their engineering creativity. This year’s theme is Dragons\, Knights\, and Legendary Sights – so expect to see creations worthy of the kingdom. Take a tour on the last day of statues to decide for yourself who’s got the most creativity. \n\nFireworks and Torchlit Parade: Michigan’s original ski area Mont Ripley hosts a torchlit parade down its hilly slopes – viewed across the Portage Canal from Houghton. The torchlight parade concludes Carnival’s lineup and brings a crowd to the Houghton waterfront to watch the show. Fireworks will follow the parade – signifying carnival’s 102nd year in the Keweenaw. Mark your carnival experience with this classic must-see on Saturday\, Feb. 8. \n\nEntertainment at Upper Michigan’s Largest Entertainment Venue: Known for cutting-edge performances that tour the globe\, Water Street Dance Milwaukee pushes the boundaries of contemporary dance\, leaving you breathless and inspired. This multifaceted dance company is dedicated to exploring diversity within our art\, artists\, and audiences. Renowned for their athletic\, innovative\, and entertaining performances\, they invite all to partake in the vibrant experiences they create. See shows at 2 and 7 p.m. \n\nExplore Beyond Carnival: After the festivities\, extend your stay and experience the Keweenaw’s year-round charm. Take a winter hike on snow-covered trails\, or ski at Mont Ripley only minutes away from Michigan Tech. Winter Carnival is a perfect introduction to the region’s cold outdoor adventures. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning alumnus\, the 2025 Winter Carnival promises to be a celebration of history\, creativity and community. Don’t miss out on the iconic winter event that brings the magic of snow and ice to life.

SUMMARY:Houghton - Annual Mass in the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel
DESCRIPTION:Ice Mass 2025 in the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel St. Albert the Great University Parish\, serving students\, faculty and staff of Michigan \n  \nTechnological University and Gogebic (“Go-Gee-Bick”) Community College\, will host the annual Mass in the Our Lady of the Snows ice chapel during MTU’s famed Winter Carnival. The Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated in a chapel hand-built from ice and snow by MTU students and community members. The Ice Mass has gained international attention; it is a unique expression of Catholic faith in the deep snow country of the Keweenaw with over 500 in attendance in\n2024. \n  \nThere are three Masses: 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. EST on Friday\, Feb. 7\, as well as at 10 a.m. EST on Saturday\, Feb. 8. The Masses at 5:30 pm EST and 10:00 pm EST on Friday Feb. 7 will be live-streamed on Facebook (and embedded on our website\, mtucatholic.org/icemass). \n  \nParticipants may register online for the link to the Live Stream: mtucatholic.org/icemass \nThe 2025 Live Stream Event Link:\n5:30 PM: https://www.facebook.com/events/927719602826563\n10:00 PM: https://www.facebook.com/events/2045948112508711\nThe 2024 YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL8GtBKHqrA \n  \nStory for Media Use: \n  \nMTU Students Transform Ice\, Snow into Chapel \n  \nBuilding a chapel out of ice and snow originally came to the attention of St. Albert the Great University Parish at the suggestion of a parent. Seeing this to be a ‘fun idea’ during Michigan Tech’s famed Winter Carnival\, a small group of students at St. Al’s decided to give it a go back in 2016 alongside their pastor Fr. Ben Hasse. They were quickly surprised by how the word spread and how excited people\, Catholics and non-Catholics alike\, were to come to such an event leading to international coverage in 2021. Ten years later\, building the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel is a well-known annual tradition for the students\, locals\, and people from all over the world. \n  \nThe ice chapel is built each year by college students and community members in the Keweenaw peninsula town of Houghton\, Michigan\, USA. Over the course of a month\, people can be found outside shoveling\, bucketing\, stomping\, and carving from a mountain of snow. Through their efforts\, and plywood forms held together by 2x4s\, the ice chapel is brought to life. More and more students get involved each year\, and they bring with them their creativity to further add to\nthe beauty of the chapel. Examples include stained ice panes\, a raised pulpit\, a Marian grotto\, and carved side aisles. Another unique feature is the acquisition of an ice slab pulled up by hand from a nearby bay to use as the chapel’s altar. \n  \nThe priests at St. Al’s will celebrate three planned Ice Masses in the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel: 5:30 p.m.\, 10 p.m. EST on Friday\, Feb. 7\, and 10 a.m. EST on Saturday\, Feb. 8. The first two Masses will be livestreamed. You may visit mtucatholic.org/icemass to register for the link. \n  \nThe experience of building this unique structure brings about and strengthens friendships. When asked how much it costs to build an Ice Chapel\, Fr. Hasse simply responds “about a thousand dollars’ worth of pizza\,” which fuels the volunteers. St. Al’s parish is overjoyed to bring to life a creation that glorifies God and brings the community together through the Mass. \n  \nTo learn more about the Ice Mass or St. Albert the Great University Parish\, visit mtucatholic.org/icemass. SUMMARY:Hancock - Nordic Film Series
DESCRIPTION:An award-winning film produced in 2003 by famed director Klaus Härö will be shown on Wednesday\, February 12 at 2 p.m. at the Finnish American\nHeritage Center as the latest offering of the Center’s Nordic Film Series. \n  \n“Invisible Elina” is a riveting tale about grief\, love\, betrayal and loyalty with a 9-year-old girl as the focal point of the story. In rural Sweden of the early 1950s\, little Elina goes to school again after recovering from tuberculosis\, the same illness that killed her father a few years earlier. Elina’s family belongs to Finnish-speaking minority frowned upon by a staunch schoolmistress who starts hounding Elina for questioning her authority. Elina’s mother\, sister\, and a liberal young male teacher all try to mediate the ensuing battle of wills. \nThe film is about an hour and 15 minutes long\, and is in Finnish with English subtitles. It is suitable for all audiences. The showing is open to the public; donations are appreciated to help sustain the film series. \n“We’ve shown this film a couple of times in years past\,” said FAHC director David Maki. “As is the case with almost every Klaus Härö film\, this one’s just a great story\, not a movie that uses special effects or shocking images to further the plot. It’s an enjoyable watch for a winter afternoon.” \nFor more information about the Nordic Film Series\, or the Finnish American Heritage Center\, call (906) 487-7549
