SUMMARY:Houghton - Soul Shop: Faith-based Suicide Prevention Training
DESCRIPTION:Soul Shop: Faith-based suicide prevention training set for June 26\nThe following press release was posted on our website on June 2\, 2025.\n  \nCopper Shores Outreach & Education is hosting Soul Shop with the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan on Thursday\, June 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Houghton (245 East Montezuma Avenue). Soul Shop is a suicide prevention training program designed for leaders and members of all faith-based communities. Training is free to attend and open to members of all faith-based communities; breakfast and lunch will be provided. \n  \n“This training is a great pastoral tool for those in the church and a great inside look for those outside of the church\,” said Marna Franson\, Missioner with the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan. “Soul Shop allows for a collaborative vision of community intervention to be implemented between the religious space and the mental health profession.” \n  \nThis training opportunity reflects a broader effort to close the gaps between faith and mental health support in meaningful\, community-centered ways. Copper Shores is committed to serving all members of the community\, including those for whom faith is important. For many\, religion provides a sense of connection and community – important factors in preventing suicide. \n  \n“Religion is a point of trauma for many people\, which has historically created a divide between faith communities and nonprofit communities\,” said Kristine Martens\, Copper Shores Outreach & Education program director. “For people whose faith is important to them\, they feel a disservice when it’s not incorporated into public services like mental health training. Soul Shop bridges this gap.” \n  \nSoul Shop was developed in by Fe Anam Avis\, a paster with a passion for suicide prevention\, who noticed that the trainings he hosted did not attract faith-based community members. In an effort to draw in faith leaders\, educators and active congregation members\, Avis created a suicide prevention training that shows the messiness of humanity embraced within scriptures\, highlighting that many of the activities of a church are really prevention work. \n  \nRegistration\nRegistration closes at the end of the day on Wednesday\, June 25. Register for free and learn more about Soul Shop at coppershores.org/soul-shop. To learn more about Copper Shores Outreach & Education\, visit coppershores.org/outreach-and-education.

SUMMARY:Hancock - Pride Market
DESCRIPTION:The 1st Annual Pride Market will be held at The Orpheum Theater in Hancock\, MI\, June 29th\, 1pm-6pm. Market-goers will find things from the practical to the fanciful\, such as soaps\, fresh produce\, stickers\, crochet plushies\, art prints\, books\, baskets\, garments\, and more. Everything at Pride Market was drawn\, grown\, sewn\, crocheted\, designed\, written\, or otherwise made by vendors\, and features a full lineup of LGBTQIA+ makers and small businesses. \n  \nPride Market is an expansion of successful past events organized by local artist Gray Kotila. Prior events\, such as the 2021 Queer Artists Market held in the Rozsa Center on Michigan Tech University’s campus during the 41 North Film Festival and the Queer Pop-Up Shops held at Black Ice Comics & Books in Houghton each week during June of 2024\, focused on uplifting and supporting queer creatives from the Upper Peninsula. \n  \nOrganized this year by Gray Kotila and Sophie Hansen\, Pride Market has expanded to nearly twenty vendors and welcomed many new creators\, plus three farms\, to the vendor lineup. \n  \nKotila says of the event\, “I’m so excited with the variety of what our amazing local vendors are bringing! Paired with the cool vibes of the Orpheum Theater and what 5th & Elm has to offer\, this market feels like it’ll be a great outing for folks!” Hansen adds\, “It’s exciting to see members of our community so ecstatic for Pride Market! It has been an absolute joy and honor to put together Pride Market with Gray\, and I hope that everyone will have a great time! So what are you waiting for? Come say hi June 29th!” \n  \nAll are invited to celebrate expressions of queer joy and experience what the local queer creators and small businesses bring to our community at large.
