SUMMARY:Friends of Fashion present “100 years of Hats”
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Fashion present “100 years of Hats” at Suomi Opisto-Hancock this Sunday\, May 17th. \n  \nStep back in time and experience the elegance of history as the Friends of Fashion and Real People Media present “100 Years of Hats” at historic Suomi Opisto-Hancock. This Sunday\, May 17th\, we invite you to immerse yourself in an afternoon where music\, high fashion\, and heritage converge. Set against the backdrop of the Chapel of St. Matthew and Old Main\, this event is a curated journey through time. \n  \nThe historical fashion revue\, “Which Hat Shall I Wear\,” brings the past to life with ten live models showcasing thirty exquisite vintage hats and ensembles spanning from the 1860s through the 1940s. The experience is elevated by informative live narration accompanied by the acoustic melodies of guitarist Mike Irish. This is more than a show; it is a vivid celebration of our cultural evolution and style. \n  \nThe journey continues with a short stroll to Old Main Inn\, where guests will enjoy light appetizers and desserts while listening to elegant music by Mark Spreitzer on piano and Jerry Younce on guitar. Guests will also have exclusive access to a silent auction featuring unique local experiences and vintage treasures\, with all proceeds directly supporting Real People Media. \n  \nReal People Media is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization operating the Keweenaw Storytelling Center in downtown Calumet and producers of the The Red Jacket Jamboree\, an old-time radio variety show heard throughout Michigan on Public Radio networks. The organization is currently fundraising to bring WRJX-LP 94.1 FM community radio to the airwaves! Proceeds from “A Sunday Afternoon at Suomi Opisto” help cover the organization’s operating costs and fund future programs and activities of Real People Media. \n  \nThe event takes place this Sunday\, May 17th beginning at the Chapel of St. Matthew at 2pm. Guest may park in the parking lot directly behind Old Main. (Follow signage) Space for this program is limited. Tickets\, $25 per adult\, may be purchased online at www.realpeoplemedia.org or at the door. (if available). These vendors create a marketplace where visitors can take home unique flavors and handmade treats that cannot be found anywhere else!\n\nThe farm section remains one of the most beloved parts of Locavore\, connecting residents directly with the growers who shape the region’s food system. Troemner Farm\, Minnie Farms\, Whispering Wild Market Farm\, and Boersma Family Roots anchor the lineup with produce\, herbs\, plant starts\, baked goods\, and early season vegetables. Ghost House Farm and Dragon Tree Gardens add flowers\, quail eggs\, floral jellies\, and unique garden starts. SUMMARY:Finno-Ugric Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Finno-Ugric committee to host information session \n  \nWhat exactly is Finno-Ugric? Why is Hancock so steeped in that culture? And how can I get more involved? \nAnswers to these\, and any other questions local folks might have\, will be available at a casual information session scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday\, May 26 at Griffin Café at 208 Quincy Street in downtown Hancock. In particular\, organizers expect this event will show community members\, local businesses and civic organizations how they can get involved as this community prepares to host an international celebration of a magnitude not seen in more than a decade. \n  \nAnyone with any level of interest – regardless of cultural background – is encouraged to come to the café\, order a tasty treat and develop a better understanding of what makes Hancock and its surrounding area so Finno-Ugric that the world has taken notice. \n  \nThe headline event celebrating Hancock’s status as the world’s Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture for 2026 is Juhannus (Midsummer)\, which will take place June 17-21 in and around Hancock. This festival will feature several international guests\, including both Finland’s and Estonia’s ambassadors to the United States\, as well as a variety of programming and entertainment that’s perfect for the entire family. \n  \n“We were selected as the first Finno-Ugric cultural capital outside of Europe\, so that speaks to how authentic our expressions of our culture are here\,” said Jim Kurtti\, the honorary consul of Finland for the Upper Peninsula and the chairman of the Juhannus planning committee. “We’re excited by the many guests we have coming from away\, and want to share that excitement with our friends and neighbors here and share with them all they ways they can be a part of this unique\, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” \n  \nFor more about the Juhannus celebration\, visit hancockfinnougric.com.

SUMMARY:For the Heartlands Fundraiser Dinner and Concert
DESCRIPTION:Kickstart the Summer with “For the Heartlands” Fundraiser Dinner and Concert on June 5\, 2026\nSupport the launch of the Keweenaw Heartlands Community Forest\nHANCOCK\, MI\, April 21\, 2026— The Keweenaw Heartlands Community Advisory Committee and Keweenaw Community Foundation are partnering to host “For the Heartlands\,” a fundraiser dinner and concert on Friday\, June 5\, 2026\, at the Hidden Pines Barn in Calumet. \nThe event supports the Keweenaw Heartlands Forest Fund\, held by the Keweenaw Community Foundation\, to establish the Keweenaw Heartlands Community Forest. The fund covers costs related to the early governance and management of this future publicly owned\, locally governed forest—one of the first of its kind in Michigan. \nSince late 2022\, the Keweenaw Heartlands Community Advisory Committee has worked to advance the project in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The committee has spent over 1\,900 volunteer hours working to ensure sustained public access to the roughly 20\,000 acres in Keweenaw County that make up the Heartlands. \n“We joined the advisory committee because of our club’s mission to support outdoor recreation in the Keweenaw. One of our main trails is on the Heartlands property\,” said Daryl St. John\, Keweenaw ATV Club President. “For us\, it’s about continued access to off-road trails\, hunting\, fishing\, camping—and everything else we love about living in this area.” \nWith more than $324\,000 already secured\, this event celebrates the final phase of fundraising needed to reach the campaign target of $600\,000. Achieving this goal will enable the early planning and start-up of the Keweenaw Heartlands Community Forest once a local\, publicly elected Authority Board is established. \nEvent tickets are available now and expected to sell fast! Tickets are $125 each and include a sit-down dinner\, one drink token (cash bar also available)\, and live music from The Go Rounds. The event will also feature a silent auction showcasing uniquely Keweenaw experiences. Purchase your tickets online: http://bit.ly/4heartlands-tickets \nMore than just a night out\, this event offers attendees a chance to connect with others involved in this project to learn more about what’s ahead for this community forest. \nBecome a Sponsor\nCommunity members and local businesses are also invited to support the Keweenaw Heartlands Forest Fund through sponsorships that advance the campaign’s fundraising goal. Learn more about how you can sponsor: http://bit.ly/4heartlands-sponsor. \n“As I raise a family in the Keweenaw\, it’s very important to me that my children grow up in a place where they’re free to explore the wilderness\,” said Ethan Deshetsky\, of Hidden Pines Barn in Calumet and a Community Forest Hero sponsor for the event. “I support the Keweenaw Heartlands Project efforts to keep wild places open for future generations.” \nFor more information about the Keweenaw Heartlands Forest Fund\, visit www.keweenawheartlandsforestfund.org or contact Robin Meneguzzo at robin@keweenawgives.org or (906) 482-9673. \nFor more information about the Keweenaw Heartlands Project\, visit www.keweenawcommunityfoundation.org/keweenaw-heartlands.
