SUMMARY:Zoom - 8th Keweenaw Native Plant Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a morning of fun and inspiring talks at the eighth annual Keweenaw Native Plant Symposium\, set for 9 a.m. to noon\, Saturday\, April 12\, on Zoom. Everyone is invited\, and the event is free. To register\, visit keweenaw.wildones.org. \n  \nKeynote speaker Kim Eierman will present “Selling Native Plants with Cues to Care.” Not all neighbors and city officials are on board with the look of natural landscaping. Kim will illustrate how to show intent in your native landscape and demonstrate to others that you are gardening with purpose. \nKim is the founder of EcoBeneficial LLC. She is an environmental horticulturist and ecological landscape designer specializing in native plants. Based in New York\, Kim is an active speaker nationwide on many ecological landscape topics. \n  \nKass Urban-Mead\, a pollinator specialist with the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation\, will speak on “Pollinators in the Woods: Exploring the Many Ways Wild Bees Nest and Forage in Woody Habitats.”  Join Kass for an adventure exploring how wild bees use the woods\, from the leafy forest floor to the top of the canopy. She will connect these to some suggestions on forest stewardship for pollinators. \n  \nWith the Xerces Society\, Kass provides technical assistance on pollinator conservation. She assists with planning\, designing\, installing\, and managing habitat for pollinators and other beneficial insects\, particularly in forested habitats. \n  \nMichelle Wietek-Stephens\, owner of U.P. Native Plants\, in Marquette\, will present “Butterfly Bonanza: U.P. Native Plants for U.P. Native Moths and Butterflies.” She will discuss the importance of moths and butterflies both as pollinators and as components of the local food chain; why what we plant matters; and specific pairings of native plants for U.P. moths and butterflies. \n  \nMichelle owns and runs the region’s largest fully native plant nursery\, providing thousands of plants to major landholders and home gardeners alike. During her previous 15-year career as an environmental consultant\, Michelle advised on environmental protection\, site restoration\, and wetland management. \nThe Keweenaw Native Plant Symposium is sponsored by Keweenaw Land Trust\, Keweenaw Wild Ones\, the Keweenaw Invasive Species Management Area (KISMA) and the Michigan State University Extension Service.

SUMMARY:Houghton - Special Meeting on Jail Millage Proposal
DESCRIPTION:The Houghton County Board of Commissioners and Administration invite all residents to attend a Special Meeting on April 15\, 2025\, at 10:00 a.m.\, located at 401 East Houghton Avenue\, 3rd Floor Circuit Court\, Houghton\, MI 49931\, to learn about the designs under consideration for the construction of a new county jail. If approved by the County Board\, there will be a proposed millage request to fund the construction of the selected design. \nThe current jail facility is outdated\, overcrowded\, and no longer meets state compliance standards or the needs of the county. The proposed millage would provide funding for a modern facility designed to improve public and workplace safety\, efficiency\, and the ability to meet the county’s long-term commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly community. \nTo ensure residents have a full understanding of the project before the April 15th meeting\, a series of public presentations will be held across the county in the coming weeks. These presentations will provide opportunities for residents to ask questions\, review project details\, give feedback\, and learn about the impact of the millage request before the proposal is officially presented at the special meeting. The schedule for these presentations will be released soon. \n“This is an important decision for our community\,” said Tom Tikkanen Houghton County Board Chair. “We want residents to have all the facts about why a new jail is necessary\, what it will cost\, and how it will impact our local law enforcement and justice system. The public’s input is essential in shaping the future of this project.” \nAt the meeting\, county officials\, law enforcement representatives\, and experienced jail-designers will present details on the proposal\, including cost estimates\, potential locations\, and how the funding would be raised and allocated. The goal is to place the millage request on the August 2025 ballot. For those not able to attend in person there will be a link posted on our website at Website: Houghton County. \nHoughton County encourages all residents to attend and participate in this important discussion. For more information\,\nplease contact [Contact Name] at [Phone Number] or [Email Address]. \nSpecial Meeting Details:\nDate: April 15\, 2025\nTime: 10:00 a.m.\nLocation: 401 East Houghton Avenue\, 3rd Floor\, Houghton\, MI 49931 \nKey Topics to be Discussed:\n• The urgent need for a new jail facility\n• Current jail conditions and compliance challenges\n• Input from the public attending\n• Projected costs and taxpayer impact\n• Next steps in the process leading to the August 2025 ballot \nPublic Presentation Series:\nHoughton County will be hosting a series of public presentations in various townships\, villages\, and city councils prior to April 15 to ensure the community is well-informed and heard. These presentations will allow residents to ask questions and provide feedback that will make the proposal better.

SUMMARY:Chassell - Let's Eat Community Meal
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Eat Free Community Meal from 4:00pm to 5:30pm\n\nIt’s provided and prepared by the Michigan Tech unit of Circle K and served with the help of the Sigma Rho fraternity of Chassell. Additional funding was also provided by DP Construction which is also based in Chassell. Our thanks go out to all of these folks. The menu Circle K is planning is chicken and cheese quesadillas with corn and apples as well as a dessert. Enjoy!\n \nFor this meal and all Let’s Eat Community Meals it’ll be good to keep in mind that they were originally started to provide a tasty and healthy meal but also an opportunity for folks from the same location to be able to chat with each other and get to know each other over the meal. Holy Trinity’s dining/meeting area lends itself particularly well for that.\n \nNext month’s Let’s Eat Community Meal will be on April 27 and also at Holy Trinity and sponsored and run by the Let’s Eat Community Meals organization itself. (Please note that the general schedule currently mistakenly states April 20. This is the date for Easter this year and there will be other meals on that day offered by Little Brothers\, for example.)
