SUMMARY:The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit: The U.P. Through 250 Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:February 23\, 2026-January 2\, 2027 \nThis exhibit showcases two hundred and fifty artifacts\, photographs\, and documents from our permanent collections. These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. \nMichigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However\, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well\, especially since the War of 1812. When the country braced for the Civil War\, U.P. iron miners raced to uncover iron for the Union army’s railroads and ammunitions. When labor movements exploded following World War II\, Ishpeming’s Gossard garment factory went on strike for better wages. Objects rarely on display include the medal awarded to a local Spanish American War nurse and a hand sewn battle flag brought home by a soldier from the War of 1812.  Visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571 for more info.

SUMMARY:Bonnie Loukus : Liminal Sanctuaries
DESCRIPTION:April 23 – June 10\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, April 23\, 7-8:30pm \nHANCOCK\, Mich. – Existing between different spaces while not fully belonging to one or the other is something many people experience. What does it mean to belong and how do we know when we do belong? Liminal Sanctuaries\, a new exhibition by Michigan artist Bonnie Loukus\, features oil paintings of solitary animals and forest floor ecosystems\, in between reality and some incorporeal place where they exist without human interference. The exhibit opens with a reception at Finlandia Art Gallery on Thursday\, April 23 at 7pm and will be on display through June 10.  \n  \nBonnie Loukus is a Keweenaw-based multidisciplinary artist practicing oil painting\, printmaking\, letterpress\, and book arts. Her work explores themes such as the intrinsic value of animals\, plant diversity\, small ecosystems\, symbolism\, incorporeal life\, and solitude. “Being a multidisciplinary artist\, this focus on painting has been a chance to explore my own liminality through observing animals\, plants\, and fungi to the point of sonder while researching symbolism\, poetry\, and color\,” she said. \n  \nThe paintings in the exhibit transport the viewer into what feels like a different world. “This work is a glimpse into something we won’t quite ever have being human\, with the closest possibility of understanding this only achieved by spending time alone in the natural world\,” Loukus explained. “My hope is that this work also conveys that space between contemplative solitude and the desire to connect.” \n  \nLoukus was born in Laurium\, Michigan. She is a Finlandia University graduate who majored in an interdisciplinary honors program that focused on the connection of arts\, culture\, and the environment. During the brief Upper Michigan summers\, with their long days and good light\, she focuses on painting\, sometimes painting at the family’s Finnish homestead\, overlooking former potato fields and cow pastures where her father now “makes hay.” When the days become short and dark\, she turns her practice to printmaking\, spending the evenings carving linoleum blocks. \n  \nHer work is part of US and international collections and recent artist residencies have taken her to Estonia\, Isle Royale National Park\, and Keweenaw Land Trust’s Silver Island. She is the executive director of the Copper Country Community Arts Center in Hancock. Loukus continues to enjoy living on a beautiful and remote peninsula in Lake Superior while visiting Finland and Estonia as often as possible to connect with contemporary art\, heritage\, and the land. \n  \n A reception for the artist will take place at Finlandia Art Gallery in Hancock on Thursday\, April 23 from 7-8:30 p.m. with an artist talk beginning at 7:20 p.m. For more information\, call 906-370-3722 or visit www.finlandiaartgallery.com.   \n  \ngallery@finlandiafoundation.org \nFinlandia Art Gallery \nFinnish American Heritage Center  \nFinlandia Foundation National \n435 Quincy St. \nHancock\, MI 49930

SUMMARY:Fireworks at Bridgefest 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce that IncredibleBank will serve as the official Jon Davis Memorial Fireworks Sponsor for Bridgefest 2026\, taking place June 11–14\, 2026. \n  \nAs the Fireworks Sponsor\, IncredibleBank is proud to support one of Bridgefest’s most anticipated traditions. “We’re thrilled to be part of Bridgefest 2026\,” said Kyle Kumpula\, Market Manager of IncredibleBank. “Supporting the fireworks is a wonderful way to bring people together and celebrate our community. We’re looking forward to sharing an unforgettable night with residents and visitors alike.” \n  \nThe fireworks display will take place on Saturday\, June 13\, with spectators invited to watch the sky over the Portage Canal light up at 10:35 p.m. This year promises an elevated experience as fireworks will be launched from a barge stationed in the heart of the canal creating the thrilling sensation of bursts igniting from the water itself. This unique mid-canal vantage point allows for a wider\, more immersive display\, with reflections dancing across the water and vibrant colors surrounding viewers from multiple shoreline perspectives. A special thank you to our barge sponsor\, MJO Contracting\, for helping make this vision a reality. Please note: Heads up\, boaters! A no wake zone\, and 500’ radius from the barge will be in place two hours before the Bridgefest fireworks launch to ensure the safety of both the display and all watercrafts. \n  \nThe spectacular 16-minute show will be synchronized to music\, which can be enjoyed by tuning in to 97.7 FM\, adding another layer of excitement to the sights and sounds of the evening. \n  \n“We’re grateful to partner with IncredibleBank for this signature Bridgefest event\,” said Katie Schlief of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce. “After years of envisioning fireworks launched from the water\, it’s incredibly exciting to finally bring this vision to life. This new perspective from the canal will deliver a one-of-a-kind experience and create unforgettable memories for our community.” \n  \nFor more information about Bridgefest 2026 and ways to get involved\, visit www.bridgefestfun.com or follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

SUMMARY:Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The world’s first American Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture\, Hancock\, Michigan\, is going to celebrate Juhannus (the longest\, brightest day of the year) on June 17-20. In true Nordic fashion\, the sunshine sticks around until 10-11 p.m. Hancock has been called the most Finnish place in the United States by National Geographic\, and for good reason. Tradition is lived here every day – and with a modern twist – the Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration is a can’t miss event for your summer trip planning. Here’s why… \n\nThe full schedule is now available\, featuring four days of Finnish\, Sámi\, Estonian\, Hungarian and broader Finno-Ugric culture through music\, food\, lectures\, workshops\, art\, sauna\, community gatherings and the unmistakable magic of a Keweenaw summer night. \n\nThe celebration begins Wednesday\, June 17\, with a lecture at the Quincy Mine Hoist Museum\, followed by a pop-up exhibit and social. The evening also includes the opening reception for the 4th Annual Folk School at Midsummer Exhibition at the Finlandia Art Gallery\, along with the Akseli Gallen-Kallela Exhibition at the Finnish American Heritage Center. \n\nOn Thursday\, June 18\, the 2nd Finno-Ugric Open Forum: Building Transatlantic Bridges will bring international voices to Hancock High School for keynote remarks\, panel discussions and conversation around Finno-Ugric communities\, youth cooperation and North American perspectives. That same day\, visitors can also enjoy Keweenaw Heritage Day at Quincy Mine Hoist\, where representatives from the region’s 23 Keweenaw Heritage Sites will gather\, followed by an evening mixer and concert with Ruut DeMeo\, Finlandia Foundation National Performer of the Year\, at the Finnish American Heritage Center. \n\nFriday\, June 19\, brings the Finno-Ugric Day of Culture to Hancock High School with a full day of lectures\, demonstrations\, music\, exhibits and Tori Market. Topics range from Finnish American history and kantele music to traditional singing\, Baltic psalteries\, Finno-Ugric flags\, pagan holiday traditions\, folk dance and more. Folk School workshops will also take place at Skyline Commons\, including jouhikko\, birch bark stars\, himmeli ornament making and felting. \n\nThat evening\, the celebration heads outdoors to Hancock Beach for one of Juhannus’ signature summer moments: the Sauna Expo\, live music\, games and the lighting of the Juhannus Kokko\, the traditional midsummer bonfire. With Lake Superior nearby\, saunas glowing and the sky staying light late into the evening\, it will be a scene that feels unmistakably Keweenaw. \n\n\nSaturday\, June 20\, keeps the celebration moving with a Nordic Walking event\, Tori Market\, family-friendly arts and culture activities at the Finnish American Heritage Center and the Finno-Ugric Festival on the Green. The day includes live ethnic music\, a parade of ethnic and character costumes\, flags and the Tsirk bird\, followed by the Midsummer Pole Raising Ceremony\, the 2027 Capital of Culture announcement and a group greeting photo and video. \n  \nThe Finnish Long Drink returns to Juhannus! Stay tuned for more details on how to catch them at Small Craft on Friday and at Mount Bohemia Ski Resort’s Nordic Spa on Saturday. \n\nThe afternoon brings some of the most playful events of the weekend\, including wife-carrying and the International Sauna Games from 1-5 p.m. The celebration wraps with a 7-10 p.m. dance at the Finnish American Heritage Center featuring live music from Lauluaika and Northern Stars Sámi Sisters. \n\n“This is more than a festival — it’s Hancock stepping onto an international stage while still feeling completely like home\,” said Jesse Wiederhold\, Managing Director of Visit Keweenaw. “Juhannus is sunshine\, sauna\, music\, culture\, community and that very specific Keweenaw feeling of not wanting the night to end. It’s the perfect reason to plan a summer trip to the Copper Country.” \n\nVisitors are encouraged to explore the full schedule\, book lodging early and plan for a full weekend in Hancock and the greater Keweenaw Peninsula. From historic sites and Lake Superior shoreline to downtown shops\, restaurants\, trails and cultural experiences\, Juhannus offers a rare chance to experience the Copper Country at its brightest. \n\nThe full Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration schedule is available at https://www.visitkeweenaw.com/juhannus-summer-solstice-celebration/festival-schedule/.
