SUMMARY:The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit: The U.P. Through 250 Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:February 23\, 2026-January 2\, 2027 \nThis exhibit showcases two hundred and fifty artifacts\, photographs\, and documents from our permanent collections. These objects connect local history to the national story while commemorating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. \nMichigan’s Upper Peninsula has often seemed remote from the rest of the country. However\, the themes and movements of U.S. history can be seen here as well\, especially since the War of 1812. When the country braced for the Civil War\, U.P. iron miners raced to uncover iron for the Union army’s railroads and ammunitions. When labor movements exploded following World War II\, Ishpeming’s Gossard garment factory went on strike for better wages. Youth of all ages are encouraged to submit art to the Peter White Public Library Youth Services desk beginning May 1st through July 31st\, 2026. Artists may find inspiration in the Summer Reading: Unearth a Story theme\, but are not confined to the given theme for their art pieces. We ask that your submissions do not exceed 12 inches in any direction\, and that only one art piece is submitted per child. Submissions can be made at home\, school\, or during a library program. Informational handouts detailing submission guidelines are now available at the Youth Services Desk. All submissions will be entered into the Jurassic Art Summer Reading Installation. Art will be installed on the Lower Level Art Gallery wall of the Peter White Public Library starting in July 2026. Tradition is lived here every day – and with a modern twist – the Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration is a can’t miss event for your summer trip planning. Here’s why… \n\nThe full schedule is now available\, featuring four days of Finnish\, Sámi\, Estonian\, Hungarian and broader Finno-Ugric culture through music\, food\, lectures\, workshops\, art\, sauna\, community gatherings and the unmistakable magic of a Keweenaw summer night. \n\nThe celebration begins Wednesday\, June 17\, with a lecture at the Quincy Mine Hoist Museum\, followed by a pop-up exhibit and social. The evening also includes the opening reception for the 4th Annual Folk School at Midsummer Exhibition at the Finlandia Art Gallery\, along with the Akseli Gallen-Kallela Exhibition at the Finnish American Heritage Center. \n\nOn Thursday\, June 18\, the 2nd Finno-Ugric Open Forum: Building Transatlantic Bridges will bring international voices to Hancock High School for keynote remarks\, panel discussions and conversation around Finno-Ugric communities\, youth cooperation and North American perspectives. That same day\, visitors can also enjoy Keweenaw Heritage Day at Quincy Mine Hoist\, where representatives from the region’s 23 Keweenaw Heritage Sites will gather\, followed by an evening mixer and concert with Ruut DeMeo\, Finlandia Foundation National Performer of the Year\, at the Finnish American Heritage Center. \n\nFriday\, June 19\, brings the Finno-Ugric Day of Culture to Hancock High School with a full day of lectures\, demonstrations\, music\, exhibits and Tori Market. Topics range from Finnish American history and kantele music to traditional singing\, Baltic psalteries\, Finno-Ugric flags\, pagan holiday traditions\, folk dance and more. Folk School workshops will also take place at Skyline Commons\, including jouhikko\, birch bark stars\, himmeli ornament making and felting. \n\nThat evening\, the celebration heads outdoors to Hancock Beach for one of Juhannus’ signature summer moments: the Sauna Expo\, live music\, games and the lighting of the Juhannus Kokko\, the traditional midsummer bonfire. Marie Convention & Visitors Bureau\, the Lake Superior State University Center for Freshwater Research and Education\, Hospice of the Eastern Upper Peninsula\, and Superior Health Systems are hosting open house events for the 2026 Soo Locks Engineers Day on June 26.   \n  \n“Visitors will not be able to cross the locks this year due to increased construction activity and evolving security protocols\,” said LeighAnn Ryckeghem\, Soo Project Office Operations Manager. “There will be a variety of unique exhibits in the park for visitors to learn about the Soo Locks as well as several stakeholder and partner missions.”  \n  \nThis year\, visitors are welcome into Soo Locks Canal Park from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.\, Friday\, June 26 for Engineers Day activities and new Corps of Engineers vessel dedications. Following the Engineers Day events\, the viewing platform will remain open until 10 p.m.\, and the Soo Locks Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.    \n  \n“The first Soo Locks Engineers Day took place on June 16\, 1975\,” said Soo Locks Archivist Natalie Humphrey. “Then mayor of Sault Ste. Marie\, Michigan\, Frank Pingatore\, declared the day as Army Corps of Engineers Day and urged all good people of the community to give recognition to the people who comprise the Corps of Engineers. Since 1975\, the Soo Locks have hosted Engineers Day\, except for 2020\, welcoming all visitors to share in the Soo Locks history and mission.” \n  \nWe are continuing the requirement for all bags coming into the Soo Locks Park to be clear. Clear bags will allow park security to quickly inspect bags and assist with making this a fun and safe event for everyone. \n  \nFor our visitors bringing bags\, the Engineers Day policy for the Soo Locks follows: \n  \n\nClear bags cannot be larger than 12 inches long\, 6 inches deep and 12 inches wide.\nDiaper bags are not allowed.\nMedical bags are exempt.\nWallets must not have a strap and cannot exceed 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches.\n\n  \nAll people entering the Soo Locks are subject to a security search. Firearms\, weapons – including knives of any size\, drugs\, pets (except service animals)\, skateboards and bicycles are not permitted. \n  \nWe will be continuing one-way entry into the park through the main gate for security screening. \n    \nThe Sault Ste. Marie Convention and Visitors Bureau are closing a portion of Portage Avenue to focus on downtown city merchants and vendors. Downtown Portage Avenue will close to vehicle traffic and open for pedestrians and vendors between Ferris Street and Osborn Boulevard from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.\, June 26.   \n“The Soo Locks have long been a cornerstone of our community’s history\,” said Linda Hoath\, executive director of the Sault Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Engineers Day gives us the opportunity to honor both their legacy and the innovation behind them. In recent years\, we’ve worked to expand Engineers Day into a celebration that engages the entire downtown.
