SUMMARY:Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The world’s first American Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture\, Hancock\, Michigan\, is going to celebrate Juhannus (the longest\, brightest day of the year) on June 17-20. In true Nordic fashion\, the sunshine sticks around until 10-11 p.m. Hancock has been called the most Finnish place in the United States by National Geographic\, and for good reason. Tradition is lived here every day – and with a modern twist – the Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration is a can’t miss event for your summer trip planning. Here’s why… \n\nThe full schedule is now available\, featuring four days of Finnish\, Sámi\, Estonian\, Hungarian and broader Finno-Ugric culture through music\, food\, lectures\, workshops\, art\, sauna\, community gatherings and the unmistakable magic of a Keweenaw summer night. \n\nThe celebration begins Wednesday\, June 17\, with a lecture at the Quincy Mine Hoist Museum\, followed by a pop-up exhibit and social. The evening also includes the opening reception for the 4th Annual Folk School at Midsummer Exhibition at the Finlandia Art Gallery\, along with the Akseli Gallen-Kallela Exhibition at the Finnish American Heritage Center. \n\nOn Thursday\, June 18\, the 2nd Finno-Ugric Open Forum: Building Transatlantic Bridges will bring international voices to Hancock High School for keynote remarks\, panel discussions and conversation around Finno-Ugric communities\, youth cooperation and North American perspectives. That same day\, visitors can also enjoy Keweenaw Heritage Day at Quincy Mine Hoist\, where representatives from the region’s 23 Keweenaw Heritage Sites will gather\, followed by an evening mixer and concert with Ruut DeMeo\, Finlandia Foundation National Performer of the Year\, at the Finnish American Heritage Center. \n\nFriday\, June 19\, brings the Finno-Ugric Day of Culture to Hancock High School with a full day of lectures\, demonstrations\, music\, exhibits and Tori Market. Topics range from Finnish American history and kantele music to traditional singing\, Baltic psalteries\, Finno-Ugric flags\, pagan holiday traditions\, folk dance and more. Folk School workshops will also take place at Skyline Commons\, including jouhikko\, birch bark stars\, himmeli ornament making and felting. \n\nThat evening\, the celebration heads outdoors to Hancock Beach for one of Juhannus’ signature summer moments: the Sauna Expo\, live music\, games and the lighting of the Juhannus Kokko\, the traditional midsummer bonfire. With Lake Superior nearby\, saunas glowing and the sky staying light late into the evening\, it will be a scene that feels unmistakably Keweenaw. \n\n\nSaturday\, June 20\, keeps the celebration moving with a Nordic Walking event\, Tori Market\, family-friendly arts and culture activities at the Finnish American Heritage Center and the Finno-Ugric Festival on the Green. The day includes live ethnic music\, a parade of ethnic and character costumes\, flags and the Tsirk bird\, followed by the Midsummer Pole Raising Ceremony\, the 2027 Capital of Culture announcement and a group greeting photo and video. \n  \nThe Finnish Long Drink returns to Juhannus! Stay tuned for more details on how to catch them at Small Craft on Friday and at Mount Bohemia Ski Resort’s Nordic Spa on Saturday. \n\nThe afternoon brings some of the most playful events of the weekend\, including wife-carrying and the International Sauna Games from 1-5 p.m. The celebration wraps with a 7-10 p.m. dance at the Finnish American Heritage Center featuring live music from Lauluaika and Northern Stars Sámi Sisters. \n\n“This is more than a festival — it’s Hancock stepping onto an international stage while still feeling completely like home\,” said Jesse Wiederhold\, Managing Director of Visit Keweenaw. “Juhannus is sunshine\, sauna\, music\, culture\, community and that very specific Keweenaw feeling of not wanting the night to end. It’s the perfect reason to plan a summer trip to the Copper Country.” \n\nVisitors are encouraged to explore the full schedule\, book lodging early and plan for a full weekend in Hancock and the greater Keweenaw Peninsula. From historic sites and Lake Superior shoreline to downtown shops\, restaurants\, trails and cultural experiences\, Juhannus offers a rare chance to experience the Copper Country at its brightest. \n\nThe full Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration schedule is available at https://www.visitkeweenaw.com/juhannus-summer-solstice-celebration/festival-schedule/.

SUMMARY:Finlandia Art Gallery presents The 4th Annual Folk School at Midsummer Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:June 17 – August 19\, 2026 \nOpening Reception: Wednesday\, June 17\, 7-8:30pm \nThe Folk School at Midsummer exhibit in the Finlandia Gallery at Finlandia Foundation’s Finnish American Heritage Center opens on Wednesday\, June 17. A reception will begin at 7 p.m. that evening and takes place in conjunction with the opening of an archival exhibit featuring the works of painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela that are part of the Heritage Center’s archive collection.  \n“It has become an annual tradition to celebrate midsummer with work from our Folk School\, but what visitors see in the exhibit really changes in beautiful ways from year to year\,” said Clare Zuraw\, director of the Finnish American Folk School and interim gallery director. “The creativity and skill of our incredible instructors and students shines brightly in this exhibit. All are welcome to visit and discover how we’re linking traditional skills with contemporary art.” \nRegular visitors to the annual exhibit have likely come to expect fiber art and this year is no exception with weaving\, knitting\, and felting throughout the gallery. Visitors will also find remarkable basketry\, ceramics\, instruments\, and wood carving. \nFolk School Ceramics Studio member Brooke Hilman reflects on the process of working with clay. “It grounds me in the physical world. It allows me to approach my process intuitively as a form of play\, and a form of reconnection to the body” she said. “Ceramics feels like a call toward something old\, steady\, and slow\, cultivating a deeper sense of authenticity through making.” \nThis sense of authenticity and steadiness suffuses the entire exhibition and the experience of learning and making at the Finnish American Folk School throughout the year.  \nThe opening reception on June 17 will also feature music\, with a 7pm performance by Kuparikielet\, the Folk School’s youth dance band. The Gallen-Kallela exhibit\, which will be displayed in the Martha Wiljanen Community Hall\, is the first time in nearly 20 years that these works of art by the world-renowned artist will grace the walls of the Heritage Center. Clare Zuraw\, along with archivist Joanna Chopp and Finlandia Foundation Executive Director Tommy Flanagan\, will offer brief remarks about both exhibits at about 7:30 p.m.  \n“The Gallen-Kallela exhibit will include original works\, as well as a set of signed heliogravure prints of some of his most well-known pieces\,” said archivist Joanna Chopp\, who is curating the display. Many of the pieces shown at the Heritage Center were created when Gallen-Kallela lived in the United States in the early 1920s. \nVisitors are welcome to view these and other exhibits inside the Finnish American Heritage Center Monday through Friday\, 8am-4:30pm. Next week\, special Juhannus celebrations will have the building open for demonstrations and music on Saturday\, June 20 from 10am-2pm and again for a community dance from 7pm-10pm. For more information\, call 906-370-3722 or visit www.finlandiaartgallery.com.

SUMMARY:Marquette County Habitat for Humanity First Annual Pride Build 2026
DESCRIPTION:June 19–20\, 2026 \n8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \nHabitat build sites located on Van Epps and Fairbanks in Harvey \nMarquette County Habitat for Humanity (MCHFH) is proud to host its First Annual Pride Build on June 19–20\, 2026\, inviting volunteers from across the community to come together in support of affordable housing\, inclusion\, and equitable access to safe housing. The two-day volunteer event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day at Habitat build sites located on Van Epps and Fairbanks in Harvey\, Michigan.  \nPride Build celebrates community\, service\, and the belief that everyone deserves a safe\, stable\, and affordable place to call home. While housing affordability continues to be a challenge for many families\, research shows that LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized communities often face additional barriers to securing safe and stable housing\, including discrimination\, economic disparities\, and increased risk of housing instability. Pride Build recognizes these challenges while bringing people together around a shared commitment to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in a safe and welcoming home.  \nVolunteers of all experience levels are welcome to participate\, and no prior construction experience is necessary. Participants will work alongside Habitat staff\, and fellow community volunteers on active home construction projects benefiting local families in Marquette County.  \nA suggested donation of $25 helps support Habitat’s mission and includes a Habitat T-shirt for participants. Lunch will also be provided each day.  \nCommunity members\, businesses\, and organizations are encouraged to register and participate. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work on site.  \nTo register or learn more\, visit: https://pci.jotform.com/form/261384714971161
