SUMMARY:48th Annual Big Bay Relay
DESCRIPTION:Be a Part of U.P. History  \nWhat makes The Big Bay Relay different from any other relay? It is the Upper Peninsula’s most esteemed and historic race relay event. Join the Noquemanon Trail Network in celebrating the 48th annual Big Bay Relay kicking off at the Kaufman Sports Complex Saturday\, May 16th 2026!  \nThe relay welcomes runners of all levels and we cannot wait to see what creative team names our runners come up with for the 2026 race! Teams are composed of five runners for adults and up to seven for youth teams. The relay spans the twenty-six mile stretch of Marquette’s historic 550 Big Bay Road and the finish line is in Draver Park in Big Bay.   \nIn spring of 1972\, Marquette held its first Big Bay Relay coordinated by Race Director Karen Kunkle and her husband Jack. The first race brought only ten relay teams and has grown to include over fifty teams in the past several years.  \nIf you are an elite runner who wants to compete\, or a group of friends that want to try something adventurous\, this picturesque relay is for you. For 48 years the Big Bay Relay has been uniting community members\, families and friends\, and we want you to be a part of this year’s race! It’s all about having fun\, being with friends and family while celebrating where we live and recreate.  \nFor further details or to register for the 2026 race\, visit us at\, https://runsignup.com/Race/MI/Marquette/BigBayRelay today.  \nRegistration fees are $195 per team until May 8th and $215 May 9th until May 13th.  \nRegistration divisions include five person all-female\, all-male\, or mixed teams and seven person junior division teams. Included is a “Team Spirit” award for the team that goes above and beyond. This year all proceeds benefit the Big BayPathway/Trails. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions please contact Marcia Gonstead at (906)345-0149\, or by e-mail at bigbayrelay@gmail.com. \n  \nMarcia Gonstead   \n8267 County Road Marquette\, MI  49855  \nPhone: 906.345.0149

SUMMARY:Finno-Ugric Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Finno-Ugric committee to host information session \n  \nWhat exactly is Finno-Ugric? Why is Hancock so steeped in that culture? And how can I get more involved? \nAnswers to these\, and any other questions local folks might have\, will be available at a casual information session scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday\, May 26 at Griffin Café at 208 Quincy Street in downtown Hancock. In particular\, organizers expect this event will show community members\, local businesses and civic organizations how they can get involved as this community prepares to host an international celebration of a magnitude not seen in more than a decade. \n  \nAnyone with any level of interest – regardless of cultural background – is encouraged to come to the café\, order a tasty treat and develop a better understanding of what makes Hancock and its surrounding area so Finno-Ugric that the world has taken notice. \n  \nThe headline event celebrating Hancock’s status as the world’s Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture for 2026 is Juhannus (Midsummer)\, which will take place June 17-21 in and around Hancock. This festival will feature several international guests\, including both Finland’s and Estonia’s ambassadors to the United States\, as well as a variety of programming and entertainment that’s perfect for the entire family. \n  \n“We were selected as the first Finno-Ugric cultural capital outside of Europe\, so that speaks to how authentic our expressions of our culture are here\,” said Jim Kurtti\, the honorary consul of Finland for the Upper Peninsula and the chairman of the Juhannus planning committee. “We’re excited by the many guests we have coming from away\, and want to share that excitement with our friends and neighbors here and share with them all they ways they can be a part of this unique\, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” \n  \nFor more about the Juhannus celebration\, visit hancockfinnougric.com.
