SUMMARY:Join us for a group hike!
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for one more hike before the snow flies. The hike begins at the paved Sugarloaf parking lot on CR550 and proceeds to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain with its spectacular vistas of Lake Superior and the surrounding area. From the summit\, the hike will descend along the NCT spur on the back side of Sugarloaf until it connects with the main NCT trail. The hike will then proceed west crossing over CR550 and several moderate\, but beautiful rock outcroppings to Wetmore Pond. From the pond\, it’s a short hike to the Wetmore Pond parking area where we will have some vehicles spotted for the short drive back to the Sugarloaf parking.  (Note: we will be initially meeting at the Wetmore Pond parking area to spot some vehicles.) \n  \nOur hike will be led by Marquette Area Chapter Hike Leader Dennis Fattaleh (906-360-6441)\, an experienced hiker. \n  \nThis hike will cover approximately 4 miles of terrain and is an intermediate hike. Proper hiking boots are required. Expect a few wet spots and occasional steep climbs. Plan on 3 to 4 hours of hiking time. Don’t forget to bring water and a snack! \n  \nWe’ll meet on Saturday\, November 15th at 10:00 AM at the Wetmore Pond parking area located ½ mile north of Sugarloaf on CR550 (Google Map link here).  Look for the guard rail on the left side of the road at the bottom of the hill as the road curves to the right. The entrance to the parking lot is directly in front of this guard rail. Please drive to the back of the parking area. From there\, we will load into about half the vehicles to drive the ½ mile to the Sugarloaf parking lot to begin the hike. Please be open to having fellow hikers in your vehicles to help with staging cars at both ends. \n  \nThis event is limited to 12 participants and advanced registration is required. SUMMARY:25th Annual Sonderegger Symposium "Great Lakes Maritime History"
DESCRIPTION:The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will host the 25th annual Sonderegger Symposium\, which features several presentations revolving around Upper Peninsula history. The theme of this year’s event is Above and Below the Surface: Maritime History of the Great Lakes. It will be held on Friday\, Nov. 14\, in the Northern Center Ballroom IV. Admission is free\, and includes a light lunch at noon. \n  \nSonderegger25 is inspired by the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior\, but will deal with far more than just that tragic event. The speakers are noted maritime scholars\, authors\, curators and divers who will present a breadth of knowledge. There will even be a performance of maritime music to conclude the day’s activities. \n  \nThe Sonderegger Symposium is funded by a grant from the family of Richard Sonderegger\, former head of NMU’s History Department.  Find more information on the event\, including speaker bios\, here. SUMMARY:DeVos Exhibit Hosts 'SAME AS NEVER' Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University is hosting a new exhibit titled “SAME AS NEVER [anything to get out of here\, right?]” through Dec. 15. \nArtists Piper Hill\, Zerek Kempf and Shori Sims consider time\, bodies and architecture as sites of resistance and re-imagination. The exhibit offers an immersive art experience through both physical and digital mediums that aims to provoke\, move\, amuse\, and shake its audience. \nThis exhibition is curated by Snake House VT\, an artist-run collaborative based in Vermont that is dedicated to supporting underrepresented artists through exhibitions\, performances\, screenings and other events and projects. They promote the exchange of ideas through unique programming\, embracing work that presents challenging and provocative contemporary content that is outside of\, or directly eschews\, the predominant commercial system. \nThe museum is also hosting an additional exhibit through Feb. 2 titled “Critters: Representations of Animals in Art from the Permanent Collection.” This collection exhibition highlights diverse depictions of animals in art. It examines humans’ complex emotional and social relationships with animals and the environments both share. Using various media\, the artworks on view speak to the nuances of animal relationships. \nThe DeVos Art Museum is open noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday\, noon to 8 p.m. Thursday\, and noon to 5 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Admission is free.

These sessions will be held: \n  \n Tuesday\, November 11\, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. \n  \nBoth drop-in sessions will take place at the City Center in downtown Houghton and will run approximately two hours. \n  \nEach session will begin with an overview of the city’s branding initiative\, explaining why this effort is both important and timely. Residents are encouraged to join a session at any time during the two-hour period. During each session\, attendees will be asked to provide feedback on the central themes developed from public input: Home\, Views\, and Progress. Each session  marks an important step in public engagement; input gathered from each session will be used to shape the city’s brand going forward. \n  \nThis initiative builds upon the city’s first branding survey\, conducted between November and December 2024\, which generated 637 responses from 254 zip codes. That input\, representing residents\, neighbors\, and visitors\, highlighted the importance of community identity and helped establish the three guiding themes: \n  \n Home — A place where you always feel you belong. \n  \n Views — A year-round landscape that inspires. \n  \n Progress — A city rooted in history\, building for tomorrow. \n  \nWhy Branding? \n  \nIn 2021\, Houghton earned Redevelopment Ready Communities® (RRC) certification from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). This\ncertification provides the city with access to resources to advance community development goals. RRC’s mission is to empower communities to shape their future by integrating best practices in planning\, zoning\, and economic development. \n  \nBranding is identified as a critical tool for strengthening economic health\, building community pride\, and increasing investor confidence. The MEDC strongly encourages communities to develop marketing and branding strategies promoting their unique identity and sense of place. \n  \nAccomplishments \n  \n In July 2024\, Houghton’s Planning Commission formed a committee to explore branding and survey community perspectives. \n  \n By March 2025\, four additional Houghton residents joined the committee\, broadening viewpoints and sharpening the city’s understanding of its identity. \n  \n Three themes Home\, Views\, and Progress emerged as pillars of Houghton’s brand. \n  \nWhere We’re Heading \n  \nThe goal of this process is to define our story—how we view where we live\, and who we are as a community. \n  \nEconomic development requires more than business attraction; it must also embrace community development and talent retention.
