DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Honorable Judge Robert Allen Edgar (Al Edgar)\, a Munising native\, will present a guest Constitution Day lecture at Northern Michigan University titled “The Supreme Court Unhinged: A Retired Federal Judge’s Perspective on the Constitution and the Supreme Court.” The event will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday Sept 17\, in room 2904 of NMU’s Science Building. It is free and open to the public. \nEdgar is a retired federal judge and Vietnam veteran. He was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee by Ronald Reagan. He served as chief judge from 1998-2005 and took senior status in October of 2005. \nEdgar earned his bachelor’s degree at Davison College and graduated from Duke University School of Law. Narcan is an opiate antidote which works in much the same manner as an epinephrine injection (EpiPen™) reverses an allergic reaction. Opioids include heroin and prescription pain pills like OxyContin™\, Percocet™\, methadone and Vicodin™. When a person is overdosing from an opioid\, their central nervous system and respiration system is depressed and breathing slows or stops. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids and reverses the effects of an overdose. \n  \n“Now more than ever\, individuals are encouraged to prepare themselves with the training and confidence they need to respond quickly in an overdose situation\,” Copper Shores Prevention Coordinator Lisa Simpson said. “Narcan training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively in an opioid overdose emergency.” \n  \nThis training is designed to provide participants with knowledge on how to use Narcan effectively and understand its role in emergency situations. \n  \nTopics include: \n\nThe ability to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose.\nTo administer the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone.\nTo understand the role of harm reduction in the overall opioid public health crisis.\n\nNaloxone Layperson Training dates\, times & locations: \n\nTuesday\, September 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Little Gem Community Theatre (700 Calumet Street\, Lake Linden)\nThursday\, September 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library (4585 W. Lakeshore Drive\, Houghton)\nMonday\, September 23 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ojibwa Community Library (409 Superior Avenue\, Baraga)\n\nAll community members are welcome to attend\, and no prior experience is required. Narcan training is offered free of charge and takes approximately one hour to complete. After completing training\, attendees will receive a free Narcan kit that can be administered in the field and save a life. Known for her soulful blues and jazz recordings\, McIntosh is no stranger to the old-time radio show\, having appeared on it twice before. Her captivating performances have earned her critical acclaim and a dedicated following. \nThe Red Jacket Jamboree is a captivating journey through the stories\, songs\, and history of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula and beyond. Hosted by the talented duo of Lena Dorey and Martin Achatz\, two-time poet Laureate of the U.P.\, the show is recorded in the heart of downtown Calumet\, inside the RPM studio at the Keweenaw Storytelling Center. With a live audience adding to the electric atmosphere\, the show transports listeners back to a bygone era. \nAccompanying McIntosh on this extraordinary musical adventure are the Red Jacket Radio Actors and the stage band\, known as the Copper Cats.
