SUMMARY:UNVEILING OF MARQUETTE'S NEWEST PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE
DESCRIPTION:UNVEILING OF THE CITY’S NEWEST PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE\n‘Seven Grandfather Teachings’ stone sculpture to be installed in Marquette\, MI \nMarquette\, MI - The City of Marquette announces the installation of the ‘Seven Grandfather Teachings’ sculpture by artist Jason Quigno to occur Friday\, September 6th. The sculpture has been commissioned by the City of Marquette Public Art Commission. Quigno\, an Anishinaabe contemporary stone sculptor and tribal citizen of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe\, has carved seven locally quarried boulders to represent each of the Seven Grandfathers and the teachings they offer. The stones will be placed in a circle at the entrance of the recent Spear Dock walking pier renovation in the City’s lower harbor. \nTo celebrate the installation\, several events are planned for Friday\, September 6th: \n\nSculpture Unveiling Ceremony: 5:30-6:30pm\, the community is invited to gather at the installation site and celebrate the addition of the Seven Grandfather Teachings sculpture to the City’s public art collection. Artist Jason Quigno will be present\, and an Honor Song will be performed by the Summer Cloud Singers.\nEvening Performance and Laser Light Show: 8:00 PM\, at Mattson Lower Harbor Park\, Waawiyeyaa (a local Anishinaabe-based rock band)will open the evening’s festivities with original music. At 8:45 PM\, the Big Drum and Teal Lake Singers will perform traditional Ojibwe music. This will be accompanied by a laser light show projected onto the Ore Dock\, produced by Indigenous artists and storytellers in collaboration with Fresh Coast Light Lab. The event is free and open to the public. Families and friends are encouraged to bring their own seating.\n\nThe unveiling events are presented by the City of Marquette with support from Superior Watershed Partnership\, Travel Marquette and the Fresh Coast Light Lab. \nThe ‘Seven Grandfather Teachings’ sculpture will serve as the centerpiece of the new City Shoreline Cultural Trail. This Trail\, honoring our community’s diverse cultural heritage\, will connect key sites along the City’s shoreline. The Seven Grandfather Teachings sculpture is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Marquette Public Art Fund. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Copper Harbor Trails Club\, the 31st Annual Copper Harbor Trails Fest takes place August 30 – September 1\, 2024. The annual Labor Day Weekend event features races\, music\, beer\, and good times over three days of action! Enjoy the best of what Copper Harbor\, MI has to offer with us all weekend! \n  \nSaturday brings our classic XC mountain bike race in the morning\, split into long\, medium\, and short versions depending on your appetite for pedaling our hilly\, scenic terrain. Later in the afternoon we kick off our Downhill race on Overflow\, the biggest\, baddest trail in Copper Harbor. Shortly after that our young riders show us what they’ve got in their quest for pint-sized XC glory. We wrap it up in the park downtown with music and beer from local and regional breweries. \n  \nSunday picks up where we left off with a rugged 10k Trail Run that will have you wondering if you should have worn hiking boots instead of running shoes.  Later in the morning we send it with our Enduro race\, split into three classes for you to choose from.  Stick around for the music into the evening along with booze\, food\, merch\, and more. It all culminates with the drawing of winners for our summer raffle and crowning of the King & Queen of the Mountain and Beast Mode Champions.  Think you’ll win big this year? \n  \nThe Sport and Expert Enduro and Downhill races are part of the Lake Superior Gravity Series.
