DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance and the Masonic Arts\, Theatre & Innovation Company (MÄTI) announce a new chapter for The Rocky Horror Show. After successfully producing this cult classic for the past few years\, MÄTI is passing the artistic torch to NMU Theatre and Dance\, which will stage the show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday\, Oct. 24 through Saturday\, Oct. 26 in Forest Roberts Theatre\, with later 10:30 p.m. performances on Friday and Saturday. \nThe Rocky Horror Show humorously pays homage to B movies from the science fiction and horror genres spanning the 1930s to early 1960s. Intended for mature audiences\, the plot follows a newly engaged couple who\, after being caught in a storm\, find themselves at the mansion of a flamboyant transvestite scientist\, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. There\, they encounter his latest creation\, Rocky—a Frankenstein-like figure who is a fully grown\, physically perfect muscle man with blonde hair and a tan. \n“The Rocky Horror Show has become a beloved tradition under the stewardship of MÄTI\, drawing enthusiastic audiences and rave reviews. We are incredibly grateful to MÄTI for entrusting us with this iconic production\,” said Bill Digneit\, department head of NMU Theatre and Dance. “Our students and faculty are eager to bring new life to the production. DESCRIPTION:Face your fears and phobias in the Quincy Mine Haunted Hoist House this weekend. Michigan Tech University’s Theatre Department is curating lights\,\nsounds and animations to resurrect the Halloween spirit of the Keweenaw. Instead of relying on traditional haunted house themes\, this event focuses on evoking unsettling sensations through creepy elements like clowns\, mannequins and other dolls – and eerie visuals. Visitors will travel through dimly lit\, spooky themed sections\, encountering unsettling sounds\, and multiple automated effects that will heighten the scare factor. It’s a unique way to see the mine\, taking you through closed off areas you wouldn’t see on a normal tour. \n  \nThe Haunted Hoist House experience opens this Thursday\, Oct. 24 through Saturday\, Oct. 26 from 7-10:30 p.m. All ages are welcome\, but young children should have adult supervision and adults should be mindful of the event’s theme. \n  \nThe journey begins at the Quincy Mine’s gift shop/visitor center just off US-41 at the flashing light by Peterson’s Fish Market. Folks will purchase tickets here before winding into the spinetingling hallways of the Hoist House. The event is also a hands-on opportunity for Michigan Tech students to practice and refine their craftmanship and technical skills. Students get to push their creative boundaries to organize the haunted mine further each year.

The University Choir is made up of about 40 singers representing various areas of study across campus. \nSelected works are connected by the theme of “fire and ice\,” and include musical pieces based on hot and cold emotion\, such as Katerina Gimon’s Elements\, which is a multi-movement work that uses aleatory vocal techniques\, overtone singing and other effects to represent earth\, air\, fire and water. \n“The connecting theme is hot and cold emotion and how music and art can represent things such as anger\, indifference\, depression\, sadness\, love and lust\,” said Erin Colwitz\, Northern’s director of choirs. \nOther works to be performed at the concert include The Cold Demands a Silence by Stephen Chatman\, Frostbound by Marquette native Thomas LaVoy\, Fire\, Fire by Thomas Morley\, Si Ch’io Vorrei Morire by Claudio Monteverdi\, Hurt by Trent Reznor\, and an arrangement of Stevie Nicks’ Landslide created for NMU by Zach Neufeld.

As an archaeological park and small town in Italy\, Cosa has endured a long history of occupation from 273 BCE under the Romans to a small settlement during the Medieval period\, and beyond. Join us at 11:30 to learn about the historical development of a colony that has been excavated since 1948. Ludke’s talk will touch on the history of the site\, the archaeological exploration of various areas in the town\, and ongoing excavations of a Roman bath by Florida State University.. Working at this site since 2016\, Ludke is currently participating in new investigations of a house and potential marketplace. DESCRIPTION:Copper Shores Outreach & Education is hosting free QPR Training on Thursday\, October 17\, 2024\, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library. The event is free\, will last about 90 minutes and is open to anyone in the community over the age of 16. \n  \n“Those who complete the training will be able to recognize warning signs of suicide\, know how to offer hope\, and know how to get help and potentially save a life\,” Copper Shores Outreach & Education Prevention Coordinator Lisa Simpson said. \n  \nAbout QPR\nThe training is called Question\, Persuade\, and Refer (QPR). Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year\, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question\, persuade and refer someone to help. \n  \nThe QPR training will teach people to be a “gatekeeper.” According to the Surgeon General’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001)\, a gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. \n  \nGatekeepers can be anyone\, but include parents\, friends\, neighbors\, teachers\, ministers\, doctors\, nurses\, office supervisors\, squad leaders\, foremen\, police officers\, advisors\, caseworkers\, firefighters\, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide. \n  \n“We hope everyone in our community will consider joining us for this training\,” Simpson said. “You never know who might need your help.” \n  \nRSVP\nThere is a limited number of seat for this training. SUMMARY:"Cabaret" at NMU
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University will present the daring and provocative musical Cabaret Oct. 3-5 and 10-12. The play is set in a Berlin nightclub as the 1920s draw to a close. It explores the tumultuous life of the city’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. \n“It’s a really interesting musical—more dark and gritty than happy-go-lucky—but very fun to put on\,” said director and choreographer Kristen Beth Ludwig. “It was a time of economic depression and the rise of fascism. It’s a political musical\, in a sense\, but not about an election. Part of why we put it into our season this year is because we are in a very divided time in this country\, and that is exactly where Germany was back then. Many of the themes are still relevant today\, and that just shows we still haven’t learned from our history\, and we’re going to continue that cycle if we can’t break free from it. \n“In the U.S.\, we talk about the free love era of the 1960s\, but that was very prevalent in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s in Germany\, before Adolph Hitler came to power. The nightlife was thriving\, and the people who work at the Kit Kat Club in Cabaret are very free with their sexuality\, very open with their gender fluidity.” \nThe source material for the musical is Christopher Isherwood’s novel The Berlin Stories\, about his experience in the city in the Jazz Age early ‘30s on the cusp of Hitler’s ascent. The book inspired a previous play\, I Am a Camera\, which portrays the writer as a detached observer from everything swirling around him. In Cabaret\, on the other hand\, the American novelist character named Cliff Bradshaw is actively involved in the plot. \n“Cliff is intent on writing his next great American novel\,” Ludwig added. “He’s already tried London and Paris for inspiration\, but finds himself in Berlin. He gets seduced by the nightlife and the Kit Kat Club\, where there’s an emcee who is like a puppet master for this memory play. Cliff is immediately taken with this English singer\, Sally Bowles\, an eccentric\, fascinating woman who ends up talking her way into living with him and starting a relationship.” \nA side story involves Fraulein Schneider\, the owner of the boarding house where Cliff rents an apartment. She tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz\, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. \nNMU will be performing the 1998 Broadway revival version of Cabaret\, which was directed by Sam Mendes. It featured Alan Cumming putting his stamp on the emcee role originated by Joel Grey\, and Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles. The revival ran for five or six years and brought in several guest stars for the leading roles. \nThe choreography was by Rob Marshall\, who also directed and choreographed the movie musical Chicago. Bob Fosse had famously choreographed the 1972 Cabaret movie starring Grey and Liza Minnelli. Ludwig said she pays homage to both in her original choreography for the NMU production. \nThe NMU cast arrived on campus before classes started for a week-long boot camp to learn all of the music and staging for most of the big production numbers. \n“We have a live pit band for the first time in many years for the fall musical; it’s being conducted by my brother-in-law Matt Ludwig\, who retired as band director at Marquette Senior High School. Set designer Lex van Blommestein designed a runway that projects forward from the stage\, bringing the action as close to the audience as possible. And our cast is phenomenal. Kendyl Dahlstrom does a fantastic job playing Sally Bowles. Logan Newcomb\, who played Wayne in Puffs last season\, is our Cliff Bradshaw. And Michael Ahlstrom\, a Marquette native and crowd favorite\, is the emcee.” \nShowtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday\, Oct. 3-5 and 10-12\, with a 1 p.m. matinee on Oct. 12. A sensory friendly Theatre for All matinee will be offered at 1 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 5. DESCRIPTION:Join thousands of people across the U.S. who are walking to celebrate the awe and wonder found on the more than 570 national wildlife refuges across the country\, including Seney National Wildlife Refuge!\n\nWalk with us on Saturday\, October 12. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m.\, and the walk will begin at 10:00 a.m. Can’t physically be there?  Register and walk in a favorite nature space near you.\n\nThe walk is free and open to everyone. It’s a great opportunity to support wildlife conservation\, connect with the great outdoors\, and boost physical and mental well-being.  A win-win-win!\n\nFind more information on the Seney National Wildlife Refuge’s homepage under events. www.fws.gov/refuge/seney/events\n\nThe walk will begin at the Northern Hardwoods trailhead on Robinson Street in Germfask\, where walkers can choose a 5k adventure loop through a beautiful forest\, or the more accessible Otter Run road route\, which lets you turn back at any point\, and is accessible for strollers\, wagons\, and other wheels\n\nThis is a fun walk! The event is not timed\, and there will be treats at the finish line. Dressing like your favorite “wild thing” is encouraged! “Puddles”\, the official mascot of the National Wildlife Refuge System\, will also be joining us. Participants can join in a BioBlitz and kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge while completing the walk route.
