SUMMARY:Ontonagon - Pasture Walk - Western UP
DESCRIPTION:Pasture Walk – Western UP By Frank Wardynski \n  \nFrank Wardynski will be hosting a pasture walk scheduled for October 5\, at 10:00am ET until about noon or maybe a little longer. Location\, 18360 Firesteel Rd\, Ontonagon\, MI 49953. \n  \nMy plan for the morning is to talk about new grazing practices I have been using this year. I am implementing practices I learned at a Soil Health Academy that discusses management for regenerative agriculture. We will discuss both the grazing practices along with the tools and methods used to evaluate soil health. We will be looking at soil dug up with a spade and water infiltration and comparing various grazing practices. There are challenges and drawbacks to these grazing practices. We will discuss those as well. Lunch to follow. \n  \nWho should attend? The educational content will be directed towards farmers interested in grazing livestock and improving soil health\, however\, any non-farmers wanting attend to learn more about how their food is grown are more than welcome.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and free for youth 18 and under and NMU students. They can be purchased at tickets.nmu.edu. \nThe trio will participate in two free public presentations earlier in the day: one on music appreciation at 11 a.m.; and one on music forum at 1 p.m. Both will be held in Reynolds Recital Hall. \nHaving played more than 400 shows in 15 different countries\, The Trouble Notes have built a loyal fanbase with their unique and energetic performances. SUMMARY:Houghton - Brew Street
DESCRIPTION:Brew Street (Lakeshore Drive)\, where a lively beer garden with music and food trucks will be set up. Friends and neighbors can unwind together wearing their flannels on the pier. Expect great beer pours\, regional food trucks from across the UP and a brief history lesson about the Lakeshore’s development over the years by the Carnegie Museum. Brew Street is a fundraiser for the Carnegie Museum\, a Keweenaw National Historical Park Heritage Site. \nBrew Street opens from 5-10 p.m. and will allow all ages to enjoy the bands\, history presentation and food trucks on the Houghton Pier. The adult beverage area will be 21+ for purchasing and consuming alcohol on Brew Street. \n  \nA 1917 map over what is now the Houghton Pier shows that Lakeshore used to be called “Brew Street” from Isle Royale to Dodge. \n  \nThe history and idea behind Brew Street originated from Houghton’s original lakeshore layout.  Brew Street ran from Dodge to Isle Royale Street\, between the railroad track and Shelden Avenue.  It was located behind what used to be Haas brewery. The City of Houghton has never lost touch with its resilient spirit\, and Plaidurday’s Brew Street is a perfect opportunity to stake your claim in the Keweenaw’s fall festivities. Follow up Friday’s fun with a Plaid Color Run on Saturday and Houghton’s Fall Fest. Brew Street is put on by Visit Keweenaw\, the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce\, City of Houghton and the Carnegie Museum.

SUMMARY:"Cabaret" at NMU
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University will present the daring and provocative musical Cabaret Oct. 3-5 and 10-12. The play is set in a Berlin nightclub as the 1920s draw to a close. It explores the tumultuous life of the city’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. \n“It’s a really interesting musical—more dark and gritty than happy-go-lucky—but very fun to put on\,” said director and choreographer Kristen Beth Ludwig. “It was a time of economic depression and the rise of fascism. It’s a political musical\, in a sense\, but not about an election. Part of why we put it into our season this year is because we are in a very divided time in this country\, and that is exactly where Germany was back then. Many of the themes are still relevant today\, and that just shows we still haven’t learned from our history\, and we’re going to continue that cycle if we can’t break free from it. \n“In the U.S.\, we talk about the free love era of the 1960s\, but that was very prevalent in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s in Germany\, before Adolph Hitler came to power. The nightlife was thriving\, and the people who work at the Kit Kat Club in Cabaret are very free with their sexuality\, very open with their gender fluidity.” \nThe source material for the musical is Christopher Isherwood’s novel The Berlin Stories\, about his experience in the city in the Jazz Age early ‘30s on the cusp of Hitler’s ascent. The book inspired a previous play\, I Am a Camera\, which portrays the writer as a detached observer from everything swirling around him. In Cabaret\, on the other hand\, the American novelist character named Cliff Bradshaw is actively involved in the plot. \n“Cliff is intent on writing his next great American novel\,” Ludwig added. “He’s already tried London and Paris for inspiration\, but finds himself in Berlin. He gets seduced by the nightlife and the Kit Kat Club\, where there’s an emcee who is like a puppet master for this memory play. Cliff is immediately taken with this English singer\, Sally Bowles\, an eccentric\, fascinating woman who ends up talking her way into living with him and starting a relationship.” \nA side story involves Fraulein Schneider\, the owner of the boarding house where Cliff rents an apartment. She tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz\, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. \nNMU will be performing the 1998 Broadway revival version of Cabaret\, which was directed by Sam Mendes. It featured Alan Cumming putting his stamp on the emcee role originated by Joel Grey\, and Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles. The revival ran for five or six years and brought in several guest stars for the leading roles. \nThe choreography was by Rob Marshall\, who also directed and choreographed the movie musical Chicago. Bob Fosse had famously choreographed the 1972 Cabaret movie starring Grey and Liza Minnelli. Ludwig said she pays homage to both in her original choreography for the NMU production. \nThe NMU cast arrived on campus before classes started for a week-long boot camp to learn all of the music and staging for most of the big production numbers. \n“We have a live pit band for the first time in many years for the fall musical; it’s being conducted by my brother-in-law Matt Ludwig\, who retired as band director at Marquette Senior High School. Set designer Lex van Blommestein designed a runway that projects forward from the stage\, bringing the action as close to the audience as possible. And our cast is phenomenal. Kendyl Dahlstrom does a fantastic job playing Sally Bowles. Logan Newcomb\, who played Wayne in Puffs last season\, is our Cliff Bradshaw. And Michael Ahlstrom\, a Marquette native and crowd favorite\, is the emcee.” \nShowtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday\, Oct. 3-5 and 10-12\, with a 1 p.m. matinee on Oct. 12. A sensory friendly Theatre for All matinee will be offered at 1 p.m. Saturday\, Oct. 5. Tickets are $25 for the general public; $22 for NMU employees\, seniors and military; $15 for youth; and $5 for NMU students. They can be purchase at nmu.universitytickets.com.

SUMMARY:NMU Campus Nursery Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University will host a grand opening garden party for its new Campus Nursery as part of the 125th anniversary celebration at 3 p.m. Tuesday\, Oct. 1. Participants are invited to tour the garden and learn about native plant species and efforts to increase biodiversity on our campus. There will also be an opportunity to get hands dirty by helping with fall tree and bush planting. Light refreshments will be served. \nThe nursery is a collaboration between NMU Grounds\, Facilities and SHINE (Sustainability Hub for Innovation & Environment). The idea was an adaptation of multiple student-submitted Green Fund project proposals. \nAccording to its website\, The Campus Nursery grows native\, nativar and cultivated native species to use in future landscaping projects on campus. The Nursery is located behind NMU’s Central Receiving area\, exactly where NMU grew a tree nursery decades ago. Today there is a 150-foot x 75-foot parcel to grow plant native trees\, shrubs and bushes. A native plant intern will help to nurture the plants until they are large enough to be used in campus landscaping projects.
