Lunch will not be served to high school students. \n  \nMarquette Senior High School is hosting an Eighth Grade Orientation to welcome students from Father Marquette\, Bothwell Middle Schools\, and any other interested current 8th grade students from the area on Wednesday\, January 29\, 2025\, from 10:45 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. at MSHS. Busing arrangements will be provided by Marquette Area Public Schools for 8th grade students currently attending Father Marquette and Bothwell Middle Schools. \n  \nThe Orientation will include an MSHS campus tour\, a full menu lunch in the cafeteria\, an overview of freshmen classes\, a scavenger hunt\, and an introduction to organizations\, activities\, and athletics. The MSHS faculty and students will serve as tour guides and class presenters. \n  \nOn Wednesday evening\, January 29\, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. all parents of eighth grade students are invited to attend a parent orientation in the MSHS Little Theater. Topics of discussion at the parent orientation include an overview of the graduation requirements and the academic programs we provide. We will also present opportunities of support and advancement and we will provide information on the many organizations\, activities\, and athletic sports available at MSHS. There will also be time dedicated to address parent questions and concerns. \n  \nBothwell and Father Marquette 8th grade students do not need to register for this orientation. DESCRIPTION:NMU Presents Immersive ‘Alice in Wonderland’\n1/13/2025 \nNorthern Michigan University’s CO/LAB Dance Company will present Alice in Wonderland: An Immersive Experience\, described as a “mesmerizing whirlwind of color and movement that weaves through the audience like a living\, breathing dreamscape.” The performance is unique in that it will take place in an intimate downtown Marquette space that allows the audience to be more actively engaged\, interacting with the dancers and scenery elements. \n“Immersive theater experiences are the next big thing\,” said CO/LAB Artistic Director Karina Johnson. “They’re taking over New York City\, L.A. and many other places across the country. I believe we might be one of the first universities to attempt it. It requires a lot of teamwork and planning to pull it off\, and we have a very large team of students collaborating on all aspects of this show\, which is really exciting. I think it’s something the community should not miss\, because it’s on the forefront of where theatrical art is right now.” \nThe performance will be held at 145 W. Washington Street\, on the second floor (the former Vera Bar). Showtimes are at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Jan. 30-Feb. 1 and Feb. 6-8\, with Saturday matinees both weeks at 1 and 3 p.m. \nThe immersive Alice in Wonderland is distinct in plot and presentation from previous versions depicted in television and film. It features an original score by Dominic Mrakovcich\, NMU Theatre and Dance sound and media supervisor/engineer\, and contemporary ballet choreography by Johnson. \n“Sometimes contemporary ballet is more versatile for telling a story\, more relatable to an audience and a little easier to manipulate amongst an audience\,” she added. “It seems every student in the department has their hands on this project in one way or another. Charlotte Somerville\, our McNair Scholar\, spent all summer researching how to properly light costumes worn by performers. That’s a new kind of technology that our students have never used before.” \nA Wildcat Performing Arts Academy Pre-Performance Workshop for ages 12 and under will be held in advance of the sensory-friendly performance on Saturday\, Feb. 1. \n“I’m excited because the kids are going to be able to experiment with lighting and sound\, and interact with the performers and production crew\,” said Jalina McClain\, stage management supervisor and Wildcat Performing Arts Academy managing director. “Charlotte will explain the process related to LEDs and costumes at a level appropriate for those ages. They’ll also be able to see the light and audio boards—how they’re used during the production and how pushing certain buttons creates different effects—and have an opportunity to dance in different lighting to view it from the performers’ perspective. It’s going to be a different kind of learning experience. \n“A lot of young kids who aren’t exposed to theater as much don’t know all that goes into a show behind the scenes. This lets them know there are other options\, outside of being a performer on stage. They can make costumes\, light the dancers or create mushroom chairs for the set. DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University WellBeing will hold a grand opening for the new outdoor ice rink\, located behind the Northern Center\, from 5-8 p.m. Saturday\, Feb. 1. The public is invited. The event will include a food truck\, ribbon-cutting and hot chocolate bar. \nLimited free skate rentals are available\, with priority given to NMU students. The rink will be open throughout February from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Any closures will be shared on NMU’s WellBeing Instagram here as well as nmu.edu/wellbeing. Volunteers are needed; more information can be found here. \n“We are excited to offer this new winter outdoor activity option on campus\,” said Jessica Corkin\, NMU Wellbeing promotions coordinator. “A list of rules will be posted. Some include skating at your own risk\, helmets are strongly encouraged\, please no hockey or rough play\, and no skates–even with skate guards–allowed in the Northern Center.” \nThe closest parking lots to the rink are  1 and 8. Seeing this to be a ‘fun idea’ during Michigan Tech’s famed Winter Carnival\, a small group of students at St. Al’s decided to give it a go back in 2016 alongside their pastor Fr. Ben Hasse. They were quickly surprised by how the word spread and how excited people\, Catholics and non-Catholics alike\, were to come to such an event leading to international coverage in 2021. Ten years later\, building the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel is a well-known annual tradition for the students\, locals\, and people from all over the world. \n  \nThe ice chapel is built each year by college students and community members in the Keweenaw peninsula town of Houghton\, Michigan\, USA. Over the course of a month\, people can be found outside shoveling\, bucketing\, stomping\, and carving from a mountain of snow. Through their efforts\, and plywood forms held together by 2x4s\, the ice chapel is brought to life. More and more students get involved each year\, and they bring with them their creativity to further add to\nthe beauty of the chapel. Examples include stained ice panes\, a raised pulpit\, a Marian grotto\, and carved side aisles. Another unique feature is the acquisition of an ice slab pulled up by hand from a nearby bay to use as the chapel’s altar. \n  \nThe priests at St. Al’s will celebrate three planned Ice Masses in the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel: 5:30 p.m.\, 10 p.m. EST on Friday\, Feb. 7\, and 10 a.m. EST on Saturday\, Feb. 8. The first two Masses will be livestreamed. When asked how much it costs to build an Ice Chapel\, Fr. Hasse simply responds “about a thousand dollars’ worth of pizza\,” which fuels the volunteers. DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University students are invited to participate in the NMU Money Games from 6-8 p.m. Friday\, Feb. 7. in the McClintock Building room 106. This interactive team-based game puts students in control of a budget as they aim for the highest net worth\, credit score and quality of life. \nStudents are encouraged to bring a team of two to four players but can also come solo and be matched with others to create a team. They will be able to enhance their budgeting skills\, win prizes and dabble in some light-hearted competition. Each member of the top three teams will win a $25 gift card. \nThis event is hosted by NMU Career Services\, which seeks to assist students and alumni with career exploration and job placement concerns. Career Services provides resources and services focused on career placement and career decision-making activities\, linking NMU students and alumni with potential employers\, teaching effective job search strategies\, and providing supportive information and resources to faculty and staff to address students’ career-related concerns.

I believe we might be one of the first universities to attempt it. It requires a lot of teamwork and planning to pull it off\, and we have a very large team of students collaborating on all aspects of this show\, which is really exciting. I think it’s something the community should not miss\, because it’s on the forefront of where theatrical art is right now.” \nThe performance will be held at 145 W. Washington Street\, on the second floor (the former Vera Bar). Showtimes are at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Jan. 30-Feb. 1 and Feb. 6-8\, with Saturday matinees both weeks at 1 and 3 p.m. \nThe immersive Alice in Wonderland is distinct in plot and presentation from previous versions depicted in television and film. That’s a new kind of technology that our students have never used before.” \nA Wildcat Performing Arts Academy Pre-Performance Workshop for ages 12 and under will be held in advance of the sensory-friendly performance on Saturday\, Feb. 1. \n“I’m excited because the kids are going to be able to experiment with lighting and sound\, and interact with the performers and production crew\,” said Jalina McClain\, stage management supervisor and Wildcat Performing Arts Academy managing director. “Charlotte will explain the process related to LEDs and costumes at a level appropriate for those ages. They’ll also be able to see the light and audio boards—how they’re used during the production and how pushing certain buttons creates different effects—and have an opportunity to dance in different lighting to view it from the performers’ perspective. An informational meeting will be held on Saturday February 8th\, 2025\, Saturday\n12 p.m. in the Lion’s Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. The Lion’s\nRoom is located on the lower level of the library.\nWhile in Japan\, delegates will live with a host family and visit sites of interest in\nHigashiomi and the surrounding area. SUMMARY:Hancock - Nordic Film Series
DESCRIPTION:An award-winning film produced in 2003 by famed director Klaus Härö will be shown on Wednesday\, February 12 at 2 p.m. at the Finnish American\nHeritage Center as the latest offering of the Center’s Nordic Film Series. \n  \n“Invisible Elina” is a riveting tale about grief\, love\, betrayal and loyalty with a 9-year-old girl as the focal point of the story. In rural Sweden of the early 1950s\, little Elina goes to school again after recovering from tuberculosis\, the same illness that killed her father a few years earlier. Elina’s family belongs to Finnish-speaking minority frowned upon by a staunch schoolmistress who starts hounding Elina for questioning her authority. Elina’s mother\, sister\, and a liberal young male teacher all try to mediate the ensuing battle of wills. \nThe film is about an hour and 15 minutes long\, and is in Finnish with English subtitles. It is suitable for all audiences. The showing is open to the public; donations are appreciated to help sustain the film series. \n“We’ve shown this film a couple of times in years past\,” said FAHC director David Maki. “As is the case with almost every Klaus Härö film\, this one’s just a great story\, not a movie that uses special effects or shocking images to further the plot. SUMMARY:Feeding America Mobile Food Pantry
DESCRIPTION:Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to host the first Feeding America Mobile Food Pantry of 2025. Taking place on Thursday\, February 13. Food distribution will begin at 10:00am and continue while supplies last or until 11:30am. Food will be available for approximately 550 families. Due to changes with Feeding America West Michigan\, proxy pickup will be limited. This will be a drive-thru event with directions given by parking lot attendants. Guests are asked to remain in their cars and have adequate space prepared in their trunk or back seat in advance to allow the distribution team to place food boxes directly in the vehicle. Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are located at 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey. Businesses or organizations that are interested in supporting these monthly mobile food pantries are encouraged to call 906.249.1715 for more information.
