SUMMARY:Lake Linden - Free Narcan Training Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Copper Shores Outreach & Education is pleased to announce a series of free Narcan training sessions aimed at equipping community members with vital skills to respond to opioid overdoses and save lives. They will take place on September 10 in Lake Linden\, September 19 in Houghton and September 23 in Baraga. \n  \nNaloxone (Narcan™) is a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. Narcan is an opiate antidote which works in much the same manner as an epinephrine injection (EpiPen™) reverses an allergic reaction. Opioids include heroin and prescription pain pills like OxyContin™\, Percocet™\, methadone and Vicodin™. When a person is overdosing from an opioid\, their central nervous system and respiration system is depressed and breathing slows or stops. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids and reverses the effects of an overdose. \n  \n“Now more than ever\, individuals are encouraged to prepare themselves with the training and confidence they need to respond quickly in an overdose situation\,” Copper Shores Prevention Coordinator Lisa Simpson said. “Narcan training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively in an opioid overdose emergency.” \n  \nThis training is designed to provide participants with knowledge on how to use Narcan effectively and understand its role in emergency situations. \n  \nTopics include: \n\nThe ability to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose.\nTo administer the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone.\nTo understand the role of harm reduction in the overall opioid public health crisis.\n\nNaloxone Layperson Training dates\, times & locations: \n\nTuesday\, September 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Little Gem Community Theatre (700 Calumet Street\, Lake Linden)\nThursday\, September 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake District Library (4585 W. Lakeshore Drive\, Houghton)\nMonday\, September 23 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ojibwa Community Library (409 Superior Avenue\, Baraga)\n\nAll community members are welcome to attend\, and no prior experience is required. Narcan training is offered free of charge and takes approximately one hour to complete. After completing training\, attendees will receive a free Narcan kit that can be administered in the field and save a life. The training is part of Copper Shores Outreach & Education’s ongoing efforts to enhance community health and safety. \nSign up: \nRegistration is not required\, but recommended. To register for Narcan training\, contact Lisa Simpson by calling 1 (906)  523-5920 ext. 2062 or emailing lsimpson@coppershors.org. \n  \nLearn more about training sessions and programs offered by Copper Shores Outreach & Education\, by visiting coppershores.org/outreach-and-education.

DESCRIPTION:Jazz and Blues vocalist Julie McIntosh to be featured guest on The Red Jacket Jamboree \nWest Coast jazz and blues vocalist Julie McIntosh returns to the Keweenaw Peninsula as the headliner of The Red Jacket Jamboree on Saturday\, September 7th. Known for her soulful blues and jazz recordings\, McIntosh is no stranger to the old-time radio show\, having appeared on it twice before. Her captivating performances have earned her critical acclaim and a dedicated following. \nThe Red Jacket Jamboree is a captivating journey through the stories\, songs\, and history of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula and beyond. Hosted by the talented duo of Lena Dorey and Martin Achatz\, two-time poet Laureate of the U.P.\, the show is recorded in the heart of downtown Calumet\, inside the RPM studio at the Keweenaw Storytelling Center. With a live audience adding to the electric atmosphere\, the show transports listeners back to a bygone era. \nAccompanying McIntosh on this extraordinary musical adventure are the Red Jacket Radio Actors and the stage band\, known as the Copper Cats. Led by the skilled guitarist Jerry Younce and featuring the brilliant jazz pianist Bill Carrothers\,  Jackson Peters on bass and Owen Finch on drums\, the band sets the stage on fire with their incredible performances. \nJulie McIntosh’s musical journey began in the vibrant New York City music scene of the 1980s where she explored various genres\, from jazz to rock and pop\, before finding her true calling in Rhythm and Blues. McIntosh’s talent has seen her collaborate with numerous R&B and blues legends\, including the renowned drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie\,  guitarist Billy Hector\, and keyboardist Tony Z. She has even shared the stage with the acclaimed blues and gospel trio\, the Holmes Brothers. McIntosh’s impressive career has seen her open for iconic blues figures such as Buddy Guy\, Son Seals\, L’il Ed and The Blues Imperials\, and Luther “Guitar” Jr. Johnson. \nThe Red Jacket Jamboree is brought to you by the nonprofit organization Real People Media and made possible through the generous support of the Michigan Arts and Culture Council\, the Upper Peninsula Arts and Culture Alliance\, as well as corporate and private donors. The show is recorded live in front of a live audience\, with later radio broadcasts on public radio networks\, including RPM’s WRJX-LP 94.1 (to start broadcasting in 2025). The episodes are also available for worldwide distribution through PRX Radio Exchange. Don’t miss out on this incredible experience. SUMMARY:Prize-winning Percussionist to Perform at NMU
DESCRIPTION:Percussionist Britton-René Collins\, Grand Prize winner of the 2022 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition and the 2021 Chicago International Music Competition\, will perform at Northern Michigan University as part of the Siril Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Sept. 6. She will also present two additional free events earlier in the day: a music appreciation talk at 11 a.m. and a percussion masterclass at 1 p.m. All will take place in Reynolds Recital Hall. \nTickets for her NMU concert are $12 for the general public and free for youth 18 and under and NMU students. They are available at nmu.universitytickets.com. \nCollins also won the 2020 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition\, receiving the Ambassador Prize for exceptional musicianship and demonstrating an active passion for creating social change through her music. She has dedicated her artistry to shaping an equitable community in which all musicians can thrive. \nIn addition to performing as a soloist in the U.S.\, Canada and Europe\, Collins has made several concerto appearances with ensembles including the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra\, the Valdosta Symphony and the Meridian Symphony. \nShe also enjoys life as a chamber musician with New York City-based Excelsis Percussion Quartet\, and is also the co-founder of Vision Duo alongside violinist Ariel Horowitz. As an advocate for new music\, Britton-René’s current projects involve premiering new compositions and commissions for multi-percussion and marimba. \nRecent highlights include attending the soundSCAPE new music composition and performance exchange in Italy\, making her Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) artist debut\, and participating in the Banff Centre’s Evolution: Classical program. \nCollins began playing piano at age five\, and discovered percussion at eight years old when she became intrigued by the drum set. She quickly fell in love with playing rock\, jazz and pop music on the drums\, which ignited her enthusiasm to explore various percussion instruments and styles of music. \nShe received her bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Toronto\, where she won the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. She received her master’s degree at the University of Michigan in 2023.
