SUMMARY:Hancock - Laura Foster Nicholson Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Finlandia Art Gallery will present Foretelling the Future\, Reflecting the Past\, a textile exhibit by Laura Foster Nicholson. \n  \nThe exhibit will be held at The Finlandia Art Gallery\, located in the Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC)\, Hancock from September 26 to November 13\, 2024. \n  \nA reception for the artist will take place at the gallery\, Thursday\, September 26\, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public\, refreshments will be served.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMethane Glow\, 2022\, 23” x 43”\, Wool\, mylar\, cotton \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Climate change is not the future\, it is now\,” says Foster Nicholson in describing her work. An award winning textile artist\, Foster Nicholson uses her weavings to convey her deep concern for the environment and the effects of climate change. In her Finlandia Art Gallery exhibition “Foretelling the Future\, Reflecting the Past” Foster Nicholson will present two of her series: Venice and Containers.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Lagoon\, Flooding\, 2020\, 27” x 44”\, Wool\, mylar\, cotton \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHer Venice series strives to convey the future of damage\, dislocation and loss faced by all of us living near large bodies of water as a result of rising sea levels. “The poignance of seeing such a treasure of an artwork\, the City of Venice\, annually inundated with devastating flooding\, is a dramatic beacon\, highlighting the plight faced by cities around the world.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIl Redentore\, Flooded\, 2020\, 36″ x 30.5″ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her Containers series\, she visually distills our societies ever increasing appetite for consumer goods and the vast network of shipping and trucking routes needed to meet that appetite. “The manufacture of the goods\, the energy expended\, the end use of goods no longer desired\, all deeply affect our environment and our health.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMV Express Pearl Fire\, 2021\, 25” x 45”\, Wool\, mylar\, cotton \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFoster Nicholson is of Scottish and English heritage and had strong support from her family to study art. Her education led her first to Kansas City Art Institute where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts\, but it was her graduate education at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield\, Michigan that made her a life-long friend of Finland. \n“I went on to get my MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art which was highly recommended by my professor. Cranbrook is a very small but intensively aesthetic school\, dedicated to the hand\, critical thought and vision\, and the goals of the arts and crafts movement\, a handmade environment\,” says Foster Nicholson.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCranbrook Academy of Art\, Bloomfield Hills\, Michigan \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Eliel & Loja Saarinen\, a Finnish Architect and his textile designer wife\, designed much of the original Cranbrook community\, with buildings detailed down to the laying of each brick\, bringing in sculptors and metalsmiths and weavers to embellish and bring to life this extraordinary Finnish American environment. Their aesthetic has lived on for decades at Cranbrook\, and I became a devotee.” \n  \n“So now\, I am part Finnish\, by adoption\,” continues Foster Nicholson. “I was\, and still am\, mesmerized by the totally designed environment\, engaging art and craft and design in equal portions. When I was a student there\, I had a work-study job at the Cranbrook Museum\, helping to prepare Loja Saarinen’s rugs and textiles for a large exhibition about Cranbrook (Design in America: the Cranbrook Vision\, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art). And now\, I live in New Harmony\, Indiana\, a Utopian settlement full of art\, artists\, visionaries\, and life.” \n  \nFoster Nicholson’s artwork is in a number of museum collections\, including the Art Institute of Chicago\, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, the archives of the Venice Biennale\, Racine Art Museum\, Reading Public Museum\, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum of the Smithsonian Institution\, and the Cotsent Collection of the Textile Museum\, Washington\, DC\, as well as many private and corporate collections.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForetelling the Future\, Reflecting the Past will be on display at The Finlandia Gallery through November 13\, 2024. \nThe Finlandia Art Gallery is located in the Finnish American Heritage Center\, 435 Quincy Street\, Hancock. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. SUMMARY:Hancock - Unveiling of Sculptures at the Quincy Dry House Ruins
DESCRIPTION:Keweenaw National Historical Park\, the Keweenaw NHP Advisory Commission\, and Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association scheduled the unveiling of four sculptures on the landscape at the Quincy Dry House Ruins along US-41\, Thursday\, September 26\, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; all members of the public are invited to attend.\n\nArt has been a part of the history of the National Parks since the 1870s when Hudson River School painters captured majestic Western landscapes.  Keweenaw NHP and its partners set out to commission an art piece that captures the workers and families who were once sprawled densely throughout the Copper Country\, showing the everyday lives of those who are gone\, but not forgotten. Artist Kasey Koski has captured those themes through the metal of her sculptures.\n\nKoski is an interdisciplinary artist\, curator and educator living in Wenatchee\, Washington. From 2015 to 2023\, she served as exhibits curator for the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center and is currently serving as curator for the Chelan County Museum. Her ties to the Keweenaw run deep. She attended Finlandia University and is descended from mining immigrants to the Keweenaw.\n\nKoski and Keweenaw NHP will hold numerous events throughout September for all to attend. On Saturday\, September 21 and 28 from noon – 2:00 p.m. at the Calumet Visitor Center\, Koski will host a hands-on workshop where participants of ages can create silhouettes of their own. Join her on Wednesday\, September 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Calumet Visitor Center for her presentation on her inspiration and process for creating the sculptures.\n\nTo learn more about the program visit: https://go.nps.gov/KeweArtist2024\n\nTo find Kasey’s portfolio\, blog\, and more visit https://www.kaseykoskiart.com/

SUMMARY:Baraga - Free Narcan Training Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Copper Shores Outreach & Education is pleased to announce a series of free Narcan training sessions aimed at equipping community members with vital skills to respond to opioid overdoses and save lives. They will take place on September 10 in Lake Linden\, September 19 in Houghton and September 23 in Baraga. \n  \nNaloxone (Narcan™) is a life-saving medication that can reverse opioid overdoses. Narcan is an opiate antidote which works in much the same manner as an epinephrine injection (EpiPen™) reverses an allergic reaction. Opioids include heroin and prescription pain pills like OxyContin™\, Percocet™\, methadone and Vicodin™. When a person is overdosing from an opioid\, their central nervous system and respiration system is depressed and breathing slows or stops. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids and reverses the effects of an overdose. \n  \n“Now more than ever\, individuals are encouraged to prepare themselves with the training and confidence they need to respond quickly in an overdose situation\,” Copper Shores Prevention Coordinator Lisa Simpson said. “Narcan training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively in an opioid overdose emergency.” \n  \nThis training is designed to provide participants with knowledge on how to use Narcan effectively and understand its role in emergency situations. \n  \nTopics include: \n\nThe ability to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose.\nTo administer the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone.\nTo understand the role of harm reduction in the overall opioid public health crisis.\n\nNaloxone Layperson Training dates\, times & locations: \n\nMonday\, September 23 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ojibwa Community Library (409 Superior Avenue\, Baraga)\n\nAll community members are welcome to attend\, and no prior experience is required. Narcan training is offered free of charge and takes approximately one hour to complete. After completing training\, attendees will receive a free Narcan kit that can be administered in the field and save a life. The training is part of Copper Shores Outreach & Education’s ongoing efforts to enhance community health and safety. \nSign up: \nRegistration is not required\, but recommended. To register for Narcan training\, contact Lisa Simpson by calling 1 (906)  523-5920 ext. 2062 or emailing lsimpson@coppershors.org. \n  \nLearn more about training sessions and programs offered by Copper Shores Outreach & Education\, by visiting coppershores.org/outreach-and-education.

SUMMARY:NMU to Host Anishinaabe Lacrosse Game
DESCRIPTION:  \nNorthern Michigan University will host a traditional Anishinaabe lacrosse game—or bagodowe—as part of its 125th anniversary homecoming celebration\, at 1 p.m. Sunday\, Sept. 22\, in the Superior Dome. The game originated on a small island on Lake Superior\, just north of Wisconsin’s Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The public is invited to play or watch. \nLacrosse occupies an important place in Indigenous culture. Many communities have a deep connection and view it as much more than a sport of physical endurance. An online description states that “it is considered a gift from the creator—a ‘medicine’ used to drive away sickness and create positive energy while teaching athletes the value of community and working together for the greater good.” \nJustin Schapp\, assistant director of NMU’s Diversity and Inclusion Office\, said that many of the Native nations in the Three Fires Confederacy composed of the Ojibwe\, Odawa and Potawatomi have been healing their communities by revitalizing this medicine game over the past decade. \n“By including this game as part of NMUs homecoming events and the 125th anniversary\, we are providing an opportunity to allow our students\, faculty\, staff and community to understand this journey from Indigenous perspectives. \n“Bagodowe is a gift game organized to build community. Players are asked to bring a small gift to place on a blanket with others. When a player scores a goal\, they are invited to select a gift. At the end of the game\, the winning team is invited to select a gift from the blanket.” \nThe event will open with the following tribal representatives providing participants with knowledge about the game’s origins and instructions on how to play: Daniel Jackson\, Saginaw Chippewa; Ricky Woods\, Grand Traverse Band; Devon DeVerney\, Lac du Flambeau Band; and Chris Shawa\, Gun Lake Band. \nSchapp said Sunday’s event will also be a nod to Northern history. The first varsity women’s athletic team\, established in 1968\, competed in the similar sport of field hockey.
