SUMMARY:NMU Presents 'Rocky Horror Show'
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will host its production of The Rocky Horror Show Thursday-Saturday\, Oct. 23-25\, in Forest Roberts Theatre.  \nThe show will be directed by NMU Theatre and Dance alumna Maisie James (’25) under the mentorship of assistant professor Kaitlyn Frotton. \nThis cult classic humorously pays homage to B movies from the science fiction and horror genres spanning the 1930s to the early 1960s. The plot follows a newly engaged couple who\, after being caught in a storm\, find themselves at the mansion of a flamboyant transvestite scientist\, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. There\, they encounter his latest creation\, Rocky-a Frankenstein-like figure who is a fully grown\, physically perfect muscle man with blonde hair and a tan. \nAt The Rocky Horror Show\, the rules of traditional theater are meant to be broken. The show features a unique call-and-response theater environment where the audience is expected to be loud and interact with the show and its actors. \n“Since it is the 50th anniversary of the show\, I wanted to pay homage to the culture that created the callouts and the experience of Rocky that we love today\, which ultimately came from the drag ballroom scene in Harlem in the ’80s\,” James said. “I really wanted to lean into the camp aspects and add extra flair to the characters with non traditional casting.” \nThe show will have various showtimes across the weekend\, including a 7:30 p.m. showtime Thursday-Saturday and additional 10:30 p.m. showtimes on Friday and Saturday. There will also be an Opening Night Party following the Thursday show\, featuring complimentary food and drinks and the opportunity to meet the cast and crew.  \n“The energy always ends up like a rock concert\, and it’s truly incredible to be enveloped in such a safe space where everyone can fully express themselves\,” James stated. “Even if you’re not much for audience participation\, the work these actors have put in is nothing short of spectacular!” \nThis show is intended for mature audiences. Admission is $25 for the general public\, $22 for NMU staff\, seniors and military\, $15 for youth\, and $5 for NMU students. Tickets for this event can be purchased in person or online at nmu.universitytickets.com. This show is a fundraiser and does not accept flex passes or season tickets. \n \n

SUMMARY:STORM\, a historical multi-media performance on Great Lakes storms and shipwrecks
DESCRIPTION:STORM\, a historical multi-media performance on Great Lakes storms and shipwrecks\, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday\, Oct. 24\, in Jamrich Hall 1100 at Northern Michigan University. It is hosted by NMU’s Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center. Maritime historian Ric Mixter returns to his hometown of Marquette with musician Dan Hall to tell the Edmund Fitzgerald story in a unique way: with Hall’s custom music on key characters in the storm and Mixter’s exclusive interviews from those who were eyewitnesses to the search and discoveries made 550 feet below Lake Superior.  \nGordon Lightfoot turned the Great Lakes’ largest shipwreck into a legend\, but his version of the story is more fiction that fact. Historian Ric Mixter has spent 30 years interviewing people who built\, sailed and searched for the “Mighty Fitz” when it vanished 100 miles from Marquette on Nov. 10th\, 1975. His findings have led him to become the most viewed expert on the disaster.  \nWhy didn’t the Fitz make it to Whitefish Point? Mixter separates the myths of the loss with data and interviews while narrating new songs about the most famous ship to sail the lakes.  \nMixter was the media coordinator for the controversial Delta dive to the shipwreck in July 1994. He will share behind-the-scenes information on the discovery of a sailor who was wearing a lifejacket when lost. His frank discussion is done tastefully and the entire event is suitable for the entire family. \nThe duo have toured extensively with their concert series STORM\, being featured on Mackinac Island\, Cheboygan\, Traverse City and a half dozen other concert venues. Mixter has toured two countries and even NASA telling stories of the Great Lakes\, after a 30-year broadcast career that began at WMQT Q-107 and WLUC TV6 back in the early 1980s. He was born at KI Sawyer and even flew the last B-52 from that base when it closed Air Force operations in 1995. \n
