DESCRIPTION:NMU’s Sustainability Hub for Innovation and Environment (SHINE) will host two events on Tuesday\, Sept. 9\, to seek campus and community input on the project to develop an experiential learning forest and garden at the corner of Norwood and Neidhart Avenues\, adjacent to the Woodland Park Apartments.\nThe first will be an “open house” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, when people can drop by the actual space to see the changes that have been made\, speak to those involved in the planning and share their thoughts and ideas through conversation and an interactive survey.\nFrom 6-8 p.m.\, SHINE will hold a Design Jam hosted by Bill Digneit in the Northern Center Peninsula II room. Participants will convene in small groups to design their ideal park\, share their results\, and then revise their designs based on feedback from the other groups. Pizza will be served at this collaborative event for all ages.\nTemporarily named Woodland Park\, the site features about 20 acres of natural succession forest. The Hoop House formerly outside the Jacobetti Complex has been relocated there. Other features might include a compost demonstration site\, Indigenous medicine garden\, seed library\, pollinator gardens\, outdoor classroom\, sensory and healing forest path\, and interpretive signs.\n For more information\, visit nmu.edu/shine/woodland-park. Through the Compassionate Care Fund\, individuals are able to access GLRC’s services and get the help they need even if they are not able to pay for them. Individuals receiving assistance from the Compassionate Care Fund may be from anywhere in the Upper Peninsula. Although many clients receiving funds through the Compassionate Care Fund are receiving residential treatment\, the fund may also be used for GLRC’s other services\, including outpatient counseling\, group sessions\, and recovery housing.\n\n Great Lakes Recovery Centers is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides a variety of substance abuse and mental health services and programming across all 15 Upper Peninsula counties. DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University’s Admissions Office is hosting the Marquette/Alger Counties College Fair from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday\, Sept. 10\, in the Northern Center Ballrooms. Representatives from colleges and universities across the Midwest\, along with the Armed Forces and ROTC programs\, will participate. High school juniors and seniors and their parents are welcome to attend. \nStriveScan is a new partner with the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers (MACRO) and Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling (MACAC) fair circuit that takes place throughout the state. StriveScan helps to streamline how students receive information from colleges. \nStudents have the opportunity to register for a barcode prior to the fair at www.StriveFair.com. During the fair\, colleges will scan the barcode to send the student more information about their respective schools. The day after the fair\, students will receive an emailed report with information on all of the colleges that scanned their barcodes. \nThe event provides an opportunity for U.P. students to learn more about post-secondary options. It is part of the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers (MACRO) and Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling (MACAC) fair circuit that takes place throughout the state.

DESCRIPTION:Better Together will meet on Thursday\, September 11 at 9:30 at Zion Lutheran Church on Ingot Street in Hancock. \n  \nThe speaker will be Ginger (Hart) Loosenort and her topic will be “Extreme Makeover…Bible Style.”  Ginger and her husband Kurt have been in campus ministry for 51 years at the University of New York\, Northern Michigan University\, University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and for the past 40 years in Grand Rapids. Ginger is a Calumet native\, her father was the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Calumet for 25 years\,\, and the Director of Gitche Gummee Bible Camp in Eagle River. All area women are cordially invited to attend this fun and inspiring event. A brunch will be served and there is suggested donation of $10. All proceeds over the cost of the brunch will be donated to local charities. DESCRIPTION:Marquette -Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are partnering with Feeding America West Michigan to host a Mobile Food Pantry. Taking place on Thursday\, September 11. Food distribution will begin at 10:00am and continue while supplies last or until 11:30am. Food will be available for approximately 550 families. Due to changes with Feeding America West Michigan\, proxy pickup will be limited. This will be a drive-thru event with directions given by parking lot attendants. Guests are asked to remain in their cars and have adequate space prepared in their trunk or back seat in advance to allow the distribution team to place food boxes directly in the vehicle. Silver Creek Church and Silver Creek Thrift are located at 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey. Businesses or organizations that are interested in supporting these monthly mobile food pantries are encouraged to call 906.249.1715 for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Powerful Tools for Caregivers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Tools for Caregivers\, a six-week workshop\, designed for the non-professional\, informal family caregiver\, will be held on Thursdays\, August 21 – September 25th\, 1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Negaunee Senior Center\, 410 Jackson Street\, Negaunee.\nResearch studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition\, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health. The Powerful Tools for Caregivers program will provide caregivers tools to help reduce stress and increase relaxation\, make tough decisions\, reduce guilt\, anger and depression\, communicate effectively\, set goals and problem solve\, and take better care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend. Caregivers will benefit from the workshop whether they are helping a parent\, spouse\, or friend living at home\, in long-term care or across the country. The workshop focuses on self-care for the caregiver\, not on specific diseases or hands-on caregiving.\nPowerful Tools for Caregivers is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) in partnership with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited.
