SUMMARY:Powerful Tools for Caregivers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Tools for Caregivers\, a six-week workshop\, designed for the non-professional\, informal family caregiver\, will be held on Thursdays\, August 21 – September 25th\, 1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Negaunee Senior Center\, 410 Jackson Street\, Negaunee.\nResearch studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition\, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health. The Powerful Tools for Caregivers program will provide caregivers tools to help reduce stress and increase relaxation\, make tough decisions\, reduce guilt\, anger and depression\, communicate effectively\, set goals and problem solve\, and take better care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend. Caregivers will benefit from the workshop whether they are helping a parent\, spouse\, or friend living at home\, in long-term care or across the country. The workshop focuses on self-care for the caregiver\, not on specific diseases or hands-on caregiving.\nPowerful Tools for Caregivers is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) in partnership with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited. Registration ends when the class is full or on August 8.\nTo register\, visit www.upcap.org (click on Events) or call 2-1-1 Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for assistance.\nPTC flyer w LSH in person 082125-092525

SUMMARY:'Murmurations' Exhibit at NMU's DeVos Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum is hosting an exhibition titled “Murmurations” through Nov. 1\, with related events throughout September. The exhibit features a diverse collection of works by 30 artists\, who all participated in Nido (Italian for “nest”)\, an artist residency located in the small town of Monte Castello di Vibio\, nestled within the central hills of Italy. \nThis residency program\, facilitated by the Poor Farm Project in Little Wolf\, Wis.\, allowed artists to explore the social and historical landscape\, land resources\, and embedded narratives of Monte Castello di Vibio and the surrounding region. \nThe term “murmuration” refers to the movement of a flock of birds expanding into various patterns in the sky in order to protect themselves from predators\, establish community and exchange important information. Similarly\, this exhibition considers the ripples and reverberations of play\, research\, and exchange. Artworks highlight a wide range of topics and sensory approaches that distill\, echo\, reflect\, and respond to a shared place-based experience. \nIn addition to the exhibit\, DeVos will host unique events with multiple artists in September\, entailing talks\, performances\, art curation and an exhibition reception. The events are as follows: \nFriday\, Sept. 12: \nA performance by Misael Soto from noon to 5 p.m. In front of the Art and Design Building; \na panel talk with Nido Residency organizers at 6 p.m. in Art and Design 165; \nand a reception with performances by Mark Jeffery\, Heather Lyon and Kristin Mariani at 7 p.m. in the DeVos Art Museum. \nWednesday\, Sept. 24: \nVisiting Artist Talk with Leslie Baum\, 6 p.m\, Art and Design Room 165. \nThursday\, Sept. 25: \nPlein Air Painting-Parallel Play Experience with Leslie Baum\, 2 p.m. in the DeVos Art Museum. \n  \nThe DeVos Art Museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and Friday-Saturday\, and noon to 8 p.m. Thursday. \nAdmission is free to the exhibit and all events.

SUMMARY:Baraga - Mobile Mammography Unit
DESCRIPTION:Mobile Mammography Unit Returns to  \nKeweenaw Bay Indian Community on September 15-16\, 2025 \n\nThe Corewell Health Mobile Mammography Unit is returning to support the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community September 15 – 16\, 2025. \nThis event is anticipated to screen 96 women in two days.  The mobile mammography unit provides early breast cancer detection services to women ages 40 – 74.  The self-contained mobile screening unit will return to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Health System\, providing no-cost breast cancer screening to health center clients\, local Baraga County community members\, and tribal government employees with state-of-the-art 3D mammography screening services.  This includes women of all races in Baraga County\, Michigan. Making an appointment will ensure that this screening is done at no-cost and at a time convenient for you. \nAs you have most likely experienced\, rural women often face challenges when it comes to cancer screenings\, and mammograms can save lives by detecting breast cancer years before physical symptoms appear.  Women who have participated in the mobile mammography event in the Keweenaw Bay have stated\, “You guys are so fantastic year after year. I can’t thank you enough for your professionalism.”  Many others have stated “Quick and easy-I didn’t feel a thing! I never had that experience\, it was great to finally have a good mammogram.” \nScreen for the future of Anishinaabe Kwe and women of all races on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Mammograms are available for insured\, uninsured\, and underinsured women.  If you are uninsured\, underinsured\, or can’t afford your insurance or Medicare Part A deductible please call or text the patient navigator\, Kiana at 231-268-1307\, or call Stacey on our Kwe Brave line at 906-632-6896 ext.106 to enroll in the Michigan Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BC3NP).  You can also contact Amanda Wiggins at 906-353-4511 to be enrolled in this program. The BC3NP program can arrange and pay for program-eligible women to receive breast cancer screenings at this event\, follow-up care for an abnormal test result\, and treatment should the individual be diagnosed with breast cancer. \nWe had a record turnout last year\, and we want to do the same this year. Appointments are strongly encouraged to ensure everyone receives prompt service.  All women interested in completing their screening at this event at the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Health System on September 15 – 16\, 2025 should reach out to Amanda Wiggins at 906-353-4511. \nThis women’s health event is a collaborative effort of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community\, the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan\, Corewell Health\, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. \n###
