SUMMARY:Wildcat Theatre Follies Sept. 4-6
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will host its annual Wildcat Theatre Follies Thursday-Saturday\, Sept. 4-6\, in the Panowski Black Box Theatre. The event will showcase a variety of creative performances by freshmen and sophomores in the program\, including songs\, scenes\, monologues and dance pieces.\nThe show will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday\, with an additional 1 p.m. Theater for All sensory-friendly matinee on Saturday.\n“This is great way to introduce students to the community and their colleagues right away and hit the ground running so they are prepared for the rest of the season and understand how rehearsals work for this department\,” said Kaitlyn Frotton\, who is directing the show with Kristen Ludwig. “The sophomores are given an opportunity to mentor the freshmen\, providing them with fast friends they can look up to and who will help guide them through their first year and set them up for success for the rest of their career here.”\nThis year\, NMU Theatre and Dance held a bootcamp for 64 freshmen and transfer students\, it’s largest incoming class ever\, said Ludwig. The students arrived from Texas\, Alaska\, Kentucky\, Maryland and Oklahoma\, in addition to Great Lakes region states. The Wildcat Theatre Follies also has a new format\, with four performances instead of two.\n“We are in the Panowski Black Box Theatre\, which is set up ‘in the round’ for a more immersive experience\, for the first act\,” Ludwig said. “The second act takes us out into a tent behind the Black Box\, which has been transformed by our tech and design students to embody a reception/party vibe. For all evening performances\, there will be a cash bar and open dessert table. This will create a beautiful bookend\, both for our season\, opening with this freshfolk/sophomore showcase and closing with our senior showcase\, and for our students’ experience. They get to come in with a bang and leave with a bang!”\nTickets to the Wildcat Theatre Follies are $25 for the general public\, $22 for NMU staff\, seniors and military\, $15 for youth\, and $5 for NMU students. They can be purchased in advance at NMU ticket outlets in the Superior Dome or Bookstore\, or online at nmu.universitytickets.com.

SUMMARY:Powerful Tools for Caregivers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Tools for Caregivers\, a six-week workshop\, designed for the non-professional\, informal family caregiver\, will be held on Thursdays\, August 21 – September 25th\, 1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Negaunee Senior Center\, 410 Jackson Street\, Negaunee.\nResearch studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition\, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health. The Powerful Tools for Caregivers program will provide caregivers tools to help reduce stress and increase relaxation\, make tough decisions\, reduce guilt\, anger and depression\, communicate effectively\, set goals and problem solve\, and take better care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend. Caregivers will benefit from the workshop whether they are helping a parent\, spouse\, or friend living at home\, in long-term care or across the country. The workshop focuses on self-care for the caregiver\, not on specific diseases or hands-on care-giving.\nPowerful Tools for Caregivers is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) in partnership with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited. Registration ends when the class is full or on August 8.\nTo register\, visit www.upcap.org (click on Events) or call 2-1-1 Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for assistance.

SUMMARY:Annual Marquette County Walk for Hope
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 6th\, the Marquette County Suicide Prevention Alliance along with several community organizations\, businesses and community members will be walking for the annual Marquette County Walk for Hope to benefit local suicide prevention/postvention programming in Marquette County. The annual walk will be held in-person in Ishpeming at Al Quaal. \nThe Walk Committee urges all community members to attend to honor the spirit of the event and recognize suicide prevention\, suicide loss survivors\, attempt survivors\, and family and loved ones of those who struggle. \nCommunity members are encouraged to pre-register especially if they want to order a walk shirt (deadline for shirt ordering is August 15th). Walkers can create their own “fundraiser” to raise funds and collection donations. \nAgain this year\, community members will have the opportunity to submit a picture of a loved one (at no cost) and the Alliance will have memorial signs created and displayed along the walk route. \nThe Marquette County Suicide Prevention Alliance also continues to promote community resources such as free\, one-hour suicide prevention training to any group\, organization or business as well as Survivors of Suicide grief support groups for adults. \nThe Walk Committee appreciates any news/radio/print stories and/or interviews that would like to be conducted so community members have a chance to pre-register. SUMMARY:Woodland Park Input Requested
DESCRIPTION:NMU’s Sustainability Hub for Innovation and Environment (SHINE) will host two events on Tuesday\, Sept. 9\, to seek campus and community input on the project to develop an experiential learning forest and garden at the corner of Norwood and Neidhart Avenues\, adjacent to the Woodland Park Apartments.\nThe first will be an “open house” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\, when people can drop by the actual space to see the changes that have been made\, speak to those involved in the planning and share their thoughts and ideas through conversation and an interactive survey.\nFrom 6-8 p.m.\, SHINE will hold a Design Jam hosted by Bill Digneit in the Northern Center Peninsula II room. Participants will convene in small groups to design their ideal park\, share their results\, and then revise their designs based on feedback from the other groups. Pizza will be served at this collaborative event for all ages.\nTemporarily named Woodland Park\, the site features about 20 acres of natural succession forest. The Hoop House formerly outside the Jacobetti Complex has been relocated there. Other features might include a compost demonstration site\, Indigenous medicine garden\, seed library\, pollinator gardens\, outdoor classroom\, sensory and healing forest path\, and interpretive signs.\n For more information\, visit nmu.edu/shine/woodland-park. Questions and input can also be submitted via email at shine@nmu.edu.\n \nA portion of the Woodland Park site\, with the relocated solar array (formerly near the athletic complex) in the back\, and the frame for the Hoop House (formerly outside Jacobetti).
