SUMMARY:Celebrate the Unveiling of the Big Annie Statue
DESCRIPTION:The community is invited to a historic celebration on August 22nd\, when the Big Annie statue will be officially unveiled and dedicated in downtown Calumet. The free\, family-friendly event will take place from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. and will celebrate the life and legacy of Anna Klobuchar Clemec\, affectionately known as “Big Annie.” \n\nThe celebration will begin at 3:00 p.m. with a parade down 5th Street\, followed by the dedication ceremony at Calumet Greenspace Park. Community members can also enjoy live music\, free ice cream\, and face painting. The celebration will mark the unveiling and dedication of a new statue commemorating Big Annie’s life and legacy. \n\nThe statue honors Anna Klobuchar Clemenc (1888–1956)\, affectionately known as “Big Annie\,” a labor activist and leader during the 1913 Copper Strike. Her courage\, determination\, and advocacy for workers’ rights made her one of the most notable figures of an important chapter in both Keweenaw and American labor history. \n\nThe Big Annie Statue Fund reached its fundraising goal earlier this year thanks to the generosity of hundreds of donors\, businesses\, organizations\, and supporters from across the country. The unveiling celebrates not only the completion of the statue\, but also the community-wide effort that made it possible. \nTeam Big Annie and the Keweenaw Community Foundation extend their sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make this vision a reality. Special thanks are also extended to the Village of Calumet for its partnership in providing a permanent home for the statue. The Village’s support has helped ensure that Big Annie’s legacy will be honored and accessible at the heart of the community she helped shape. \n\nThe dedication is also a part of Michigan’s commemoration of America’s 250th Anniversary. The Big Annie Statue Project was honored to receive an AMERICA250MI History Grant\, helping support the creation of this important public monument honoring individuals who shaped our nation’s story. \nCommunity members of all ages are encouraged to attend this historic celebration and help commemorate Big Annie’s life\, leadership\, and legacy. \n\nFor more information about the Big Annie Statue Fund and project\, visit the Keweenaw Community Foundation website: https://www.keweenawcommunityfoundation.org/big-annie-

SUMMARY:Powerful Tools for Caregivers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, August 13 through September 17\, 2026\, from 1:30-3:00 pm EST\, \nIshpeming Senior Center\, 121 Greenwood Street\, Ishpeming.  \n  \nPowerful Tools for Caregivers\, a six-week in-person workshop\, designed for the non-professional\, informal family caregiver\, will be held on Thursdays\, August 13 through September 17\, 2026\, from 1:30-3:00 pm EST\, at the Ishpeming Senior Center\, 121 Greenwood Street\, Ishpeming.  \nResearch studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition\, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health. The Powerful Tools for Caregivers program will provide caregivers tools to help reduce stress and increase relaxation\, make tough decisions\, reduce guilt\, anger and depression\, communicate effectively\, set goals and problem solve\, and take better care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend. Caregivers will benefit from the workshop whether they are helping a parent\, spouse\, or friend living at home\, in long-term care or across the country. The workshop focuses on self-care for the caregiver\, not on specific diseases or hands-on caregiving. \nPowerful Tools for Caregivers is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) in partnership with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited. \nTo register\, visit www.upcap.org (click on Events) or call 2-1-1 Monday through Friday\, 8 am to 4 pm for assistance. Registration ends when the class is full or on August 3. \n

SUMMARY:Bay College Presents Sanna Vihanto\, Invisible Play Reception and Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, August 27\, 2026 at 2 p.m.  \nWhere: the Besse Gallery on the Bay College Escanaba campus \nFinnish artist Sanna Vihanto explores play\, memory and imagination through vibrant acrylic paintings inspired by movement\, wonder and fleeting moments. \nESCANABA\, Mich. – Bay College announces an exhibition\, Sanna Vihanto\, Invisible Play… Join us for an artist talk and reception Thursday\, August 27\, 2026 at 2 p.m. Eastern in the Besse Gallery on the Bay College Escanaba campus. The exhibition will be on display from August 27- October 1\, 2026. This event is free and open to the public. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nSanna Vihanto (b. 1979\, Sotkamo) is a Finnish visual artist working in the fields of visual and environmental art. She holds an MA in Arts Education from Aalto University (2012) and a BFA from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (2009) and has supplemented her studies at international art schools.  \nVihanto has realized several large-scale environmental art projects and public commissions\, including numerous works for various departments of the Kainuu hospital. She has received working and mobility grants as well as regional recognitions\, such as the Kainuu Cultural Wellbeing Award (2025) and the Sotkamo Cultural Award (2023). Vihanto also works as an art educator and actively participates in community art projects in Northern Finland. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nPlay\, time\, memories This exhibition of acrylic paintings opens up the invisible world of a child’s play: moments when a child becomes a bird\, a dancer or an explorer rise to the surface through colour\, movement and layered surfaces. The works move on the threshold – by the shore\, in the meadow\, swinging in the air – and connect the child’s freedom and imagination to broader themes: time\, simultaneous presence and absence\, bridges to another reality\, layers of memory and the fleeting moments that pass through childhood. \nBird and butterfly motifs recur in many paintings\, as do the light of water and shore\, the play of shadows and dreamlike\, translucent figures. Through these images the works also build a personal bridge: some paintings conceal my own childhood experiences and sensory memories. The process has been as much a journey into motherhood – following my child’s development and admiring play and imagination – as a return to my own childhood memories and games. \nThe works also take part in the public conversation about the value of childhood and play – an important stance at a time when their worth cannot be taken for granted. \nFunding and production: The Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) has awarded a working grant that made the paintings possible. The Finnish Cultural Foundation’s mobility grant has funded the travel and transport costs related to the exhibition. \nInvitation: Welcome to slow down and step for a moment into children’s play and the invisible world – let imagination lead you and discover the layers of time on the surfaces of the works. The artist talk and reception will be Thursday\, August 27\, 2026 at 2 p.m. Eastern in the Besse Gallery on the Bay College Escanaba campus\, and the exhibition will be on display from August 27- October 1\, 2026. This event is free and open to the public. \nQuestions about the artist or exhibition may be directed to Bay College Art Faculty and Fine Arts Coordinator Kristine Hunter at (906) 217-4252 or kristine.hunter@baycollege.edu. \n### \nPhoto Caption: Sanna Vihanto\, Alma leikkii lintua – Alma Plays a Bird. \nAbout the Bay College Art and Design Program and Gallery Spaces \nThe Art and Design program at Bay College is designed to provide students with a strong general education background as well as concentration in art and design.
