SUMMARY:Ice Mass 2026 in the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel
DESCRIPTION:St. Albert the Great University Parish\, serving students\, faculty and staff of Michigan Technological University and Gogebic (“Go-Gee-Bick”) Community College\, will host the annual Masses in the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel during MTU’s famed Winter Carnival. The Roman Catholic Mass is celebrated in a chapel hand-built from ice and snow by MTU students and community members. The Ice Mass has gained international attention; it is a unique expression of Catholic faith in the deep snow country of the Keweenaw with over 800 in attendance in 2025. \n  \nThere are three Masses: 5:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. EST on Friday\, Feb. 6\, as well as at 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday\, Feb. 7. The Masses at 5:30 pm EST and 10:00 pm EST on Friday Feb. 7 will be live-streamed on Facebook (and embedded on our website\, mtucatholic.org/icemass). \n  \nParticipants may register online for the link to the Live Stream: mtucatholic.org/icemass \n  \nThe 2026 Live Stream Event Links: \n5:30 PM: https://www.facebook.com/share/1aBNfvaCtd/ \n10:00 PM: https://www.facebook.com/share/14TdJFWA97W/ \n  \nPast 2025 Live-Stream Videos: \n5:30pm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3bWU86JEz0 \n10:00pm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VnqTJVtUWs \n  \nMTU Students Transform Ice\, Snow into Chapel \n  \nBuilding a chapel out of ice and snow originally came to the attention of St. Albert the Great University Parish at the suggestion of a parent. Seeing this to be a ‘fun idea’ during Michigan Tech’s famed Winter Carnival\, a small group of students at St. Al’s decided to give it a go back in 2016 alongside their pastor Fr. Ben Hasse. They were quickly surprised by how the word spread and how excited people\, Catholics and non-Catholics alike\, were to come to such an event leading to international coverage in 2021. Eleven years later\, building the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel is a well-known annual tradition for the students\, locals\, and people from all over the world. \n  \nThe ice chapel is built each year by college students and community members in the Keweenaw peninsula town of Houghton\, Michigan\, USA. Over the course of a month\, people can be found outside shoveling\, bucketing\, stomping\, and carving from a mountain of snow. Through their efforts\, and plywood forms held together by 2x4s\, the ice chapel is brought to life. More and more students get involved each year\, and they bring with them their creativity to further add to the beauty of the chapel. Examples include stained ice panes\, a raised pulpit\, a Marian grotto\, and arched side aisles. Another unique feature is the acquisition of an ice slab pulled up by hand from a nearby bay to use as the chapel’s altar. \n  \nThe priests at St. Al’s will celebrate three planned Ice Masses in the Our Lady of the Snows Ice Chapel: 5:30 p.m.\, 10:00 p.m. EST on Friday\, Feb. 6\, and 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday\, Feb. 7. The first two Masses will be livestreamed. You may visit mtucatholic.org/icemass to register for the link. You do not need to register if you will attend in-person. \n  \nSt. Albert the Great University Parish is made up of about 50 year-round parishioners and over 1\,000 registered student members. The experience of building this unique structure brings about and strengthens friendships. When asked how much it costs to build an Ice Chapel\, Fr. Hasse simply responds “about a thousand dollars’ worth of pizza\,” which fuels the volunteers. St. Al’s parish is overjoyed to bring to life a creation that glorifies God and brings the community together through the Mass. \n  \nTo learn more about the Ice Mass or St. Albert the Great University Parish\, visit mtucatholic.org/icemass. Could they be all these things and more?\n For artist Emily Lanctot\, they are the subject and inspiration for her exhibition “Salaiset Ruokaohjeet: Secret Recipes” which will be displayed at Finlandia Art Gallery February 5 through March 5\, 2026.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMost of the paintings in this exhibition are based on recipes from people of Michigan’s Copper Country\, sourced from locals and community cookbooks.\n “In my research\, I uncovered recipes from family members and friends that I didn’t previously know existed\,” Lanctot explained. One cookbook\, “500 Recipes of the Copper Country’s Finest Cooking\,” was produced by the same church that later became the Finnish American Heritage Center where Lanctot’s paintings will be on display. Another cookbook produced in Copper Harbor\, “Copper Country Recipes\,” contained a recipe from Lanctot’s childhood neighbor and the first director of the Finlandia Art Gallery\, Phyllis Fredendall. With bursts of color and texture\, Lanctot brings people together across space and time while welcoming viewers into a sensory experience like a shared meal.\n\n“I hope the exhibition inspires people to gather and share recipes and ways of making (rather than keep them secret) from loved ones and friends and encourages viewers to reimagine how they might approach their everyday lives\,” said Lanctot.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily Lanctot is an artist\, curator\, professor and museum director at Northern Michigan University in Marquette\, Michigan. Her multi-media art practice focuses on place\, material culture\, and the everyday. Projects\, whether experiential\, painting\, performance or installation\, are often collaborative and examine memory\, desire\, exchange\, the limitations of language\, and institutional/ideological frameworks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n A reception for the artist will take place at Finlandia Art Gallery in Hancock on Thursday\, February 5 from 7-8:30 p.m. with artist talk beginning at 7:20 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Visitors are also welcome Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm. For more information call 906-370-3722 or visit www.finlandiaartgallery.com.

SUMMARY:Staged Reading of 'Tragedy Sound' Play
DESCRIPTION:Jan. 31 2026 \nSaturday 3 p.m.  \nJamrich 1100 \nNorthern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will host a staged reading of “Tragedy Sound\,” a play written by NMU alumna Karen Saari\, at 3 p.m. Saturday\, Jan. 31\, in Jamrich 1100. The reading is free and open to the public. The production follows three U.P. women who are lifelong friends as they find themselves stranded on Lake Superior after accepting a dare to embark on a canoeing trip. \n“It’s about motherhood\, friendship\, self-acceptance\, awareness and sacrifice\,” said director Keli Crawford-Truckey. “They come to a place with one another where they can all look at themselves honestly\, accept that\, and the love they have for each other when they get into dire straits; not to mention the sacrifices they’re willing to make.” \nA staged reading consists of actors reading scripts that have yet to be memorized in front of an audience. Saari will be in Marquette for four days working with the group that is bringing her play to life\, making changes and listening to feedback. She will attend the reading. \n“From an audience perspective\, readings are really interesting because it gives them an opportunity to potentially make a difference and have their voice heard by the playwright that could really alter the outcome\,” Truckey added. “There are always things that can be developed and polished. The audience plays an important role at this time.” \nAudience members will have an opportunity to ask questions of the director and playwright and provide feedback afterward. \nNMU recently collaborated with Playhouse on the Square\, located in Memphis\, Tenn.\, to showcase two finalists from their Playwriting Award contest. Saari\, a native of the Upper Peninsula\, was chosen as the winner in 2024. Following her win\, Saari’s production had its world premiere in July 2025 in Memphis. A full-scale production will be staged at NMU in May. \n
