SUMMARY:Join us for a group hike on December 13!
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a rather easy winter warmup hike. The hike begins at the large parking area across from Wetmore Landing on CR550. The first part of the hike winds its way around a series of snow-clad rock outcroppings\, with a few minor hills and a few rocks on the trail. From there the trail levels out for a quiet hike through pines and hemlocks tipped with our recent snowfall before returning to our starting point. \n  \nOur hike will be led by Marquette Area Chapter Hike Leader Dennis Fattaleh (906-360-6441)\, an experienced hiker. \n  \nThis hike will cover approximately 3.7 miles and is a loop. Except for a few rocks at the beginning\, the trail is ideal for snowshoeing. Snowshoes or cleats are highly recommended\, along with hiking poles. Proper hiking boots are required. Plan on 3 to 4 hours of hiking time.  Don’t forget to bring water and a snack! \n  \nWe’ll meet on Saturday\, December 13th at 10:00 AM at the parking area across from Wetmore Landing on CR550 (Google Map link here). This is the large parking area approximately 1.2 miles north of Sugarloaf and is referred to as “Hogback Mountain Trailhead” on Google maps. Please pull around to the back parking area unless recent snowfall makes it difficult to get back there\, in which case we’ll meet in the smaller\, front area. \n  \nThis event is limited to 12 participants and advanced registration is required. Please click here to register. Registration will be open until Friday\, December 12th or until we reach capacity. \n  \nWe hope to see you there! \n

SUMMARY:"What Are Data Centers and How will They Impact Michigan?"
DESCRIPTION:What Are Cryptocurrency Data Centers and How Will They Impact Michigan? \n  \nThe Keweenaw Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (KUUF) will host a public forum online titled “What Are Data Centers and How Will They Impact Michigan?”\, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Sunday\, December 14. \n  \nThe speakers will be Kalvin Carter and Audrey Gerard. They will talk about boom-and-bust industries like crypto mining that use up natural resources without replacing them\, and big tech operations that do little to benefit the people who live nearby. \n  \nData mining requires a lot of water to cool the operation. That’s why data mining operations have their eye on communities like ours\, near the Great Lakes. After the water cools the servers\, it drains into the ground\, where it moves through the aquifer and back to the lake\, potentially warming it. \n  \nData mining operations also use large amounts of electricity which can raise the price of power. And they create noise. \n  \nOne example is a relatively small installation of cryptocurrency servers located across from Lake Superior Academy\, a K-5 Montessori school in Dafter Township\, Michigan\, near Sault Saint Marie. The servers generate a constant noise that the school describes as “like jack hammers 24/7.” The school is suing Odessa Partners\, the Florida owner of those servers. \n  \nKalvin Carter is the director of Up North Advocacy\, based in Sault Ste. Marie\, an organization that encourages civic engagement\, amplifying diverse voices and advocating for positive change.  Since he learned about the Lake Superior Academy’s issue with the nearby cryptocurrency data mining operation\, he has helped build partnerships\, support local advocacy and learn everything he can about how these industries affect rural communities. \n  \nAudrey Gerard is employed with Michigan United\, a nonprofit organization focused on environmental protection. She has been working closely with Dr. Chloe Kannon\,  director of EUP Solidarity\, an advocacy group affiliated with Indivisible in Sault Ste. Marie\, who serves on UP North Advocacy’s Steering Committee. \nForums are approximately one hour long.
