Friday also opens the Junior World Qualifier on the K90 hill\, where athletes start their pursuit of a place at the FIS Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Trondheim\, Norway! \n  \nSaturday\, January 17 6:00 PM \n  \nThe morning starts off with the Nordic Combined cross-country ski race on the Ishpeming Ski Club’s Norman Juhola Trail System. \n  \nThe evening brings the Paul Bietila Memorial Ski Jumping Tournament – Ski jumpers from all over the U.S.A. will test their abilities to fly as far as possible with the best style. Fans can also enjoy the unique Target Jump event\, where athletes compete for precision by trying to land on a predetermined mark near the K-point\, a true test of control\, distance\, and accuracy. \n  \nSunday\, January 18 11:00 AM \n  \nNordic Combined ski race on the Norman Juhola Trail System\, and then all eyes turn to the future with our Junior Ski Jumping Tournament on the K13\, K25\, and K40 hills. \n  \nTickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the gate. DESCRIPTION:Learn life-saving skills at free QPR and Narcan Trainings in Hancock on January 22 and 29\n  \nCopper Shores Community Health Foundation and Keweenaw Support 4 Healthy Minds are hosting free QPR and Narcan trainings\, on Thursday\, January 22 at 11 a.m. and Thursday\, January 29 at 6 p.m. Both trainings take place at the Copper Shores office on 821 Water Street in Hancock. QPR Training takes about an hour to complete\, with an optional 30-minute Narcan Training to follow. \n  \nAll community members from Houghton\, Keweenaw\, Baraga and Ontonagon counties are invited to attend. Both trainings are tailored for laypersons\, including but not limited to businesses\, educators\, faith groups\, healthcare professionals\, parents and caregivers. \n  \nQPR Training is focused on suicide prevention. QPR stands for Question\, Persuade\, Refer; three simple steps that anyone can learn to save a life. Those who take training learn to spot the warning signs of a suicide crisis\, including expressions of hopelessness\, depression\, giving away prized possessions\, talking about suicide and securing lethal means\, and then taught how to respond. \n  \nNarcan Training teaches individuals how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone. Those who take Narcan Training will learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose\, how to carry and administer the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone\, and better understand the role of harm reduction in the overall opioid public health crisis. \nRegistration is available at coppershores.org. Limited space is available. Registration closes on Tuesday\, January 20 at noon for the January 22 session\, and on Tuesday\, January 27 at noon for the January 29 session.

SUMMARY:Savvy Caregiver Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration is underway for Savvy Caregiver\, a nationally recognized educational training program for family members caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease\, dementia or memory loss and are living at home. \nSavvy Caregiver is designed to give caregivers relevant knowledge\, skills\, and mastery to support the person living with dementia and to take care of themselves. Topics include information about Alzheimer’s and related dementias\, the role of confusion and its effects on behavior\, the stages of dementia\, and how to keep the person engaged and involved in daily activities. Decision making for difficult issues caregivers often face and caregiver self-care exercises are also highlighted. Savvy Caregiver participants report increased confidence and ability to manage their caregiving\, as well as lower depression and burden. \nThe workshop has 6 weekly sessions\, each lasting 2 hours\, and will be held on Thursdays\, January 15 – February 19\, 2026 from 1:30 – 3:30 pm Eastern\, via Zoom. \nSavvy Caregiver is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP). There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited. DESCRIPTION:The Carson Wealth Noquemanon Ski Marathon presented by Honor Credit Union is set to take place on January 24th\, 2026. The Noquemanon has been held on the fourth Saturday of January for 27 years in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Marquette County. Races include the 50K that takes off from Ishpeming\, the 25K that starts in Negaunee and the 12K that begins in Marquette. We will also present opportunities of support and advancement and we will provide information on the many organizations\, activities\, and athletic sports available at MSHS. There will also be time dedicated to address parent questions and concerns.   \n  \nThis school year\, Marquette Senior High School has moved the Future 9th Grade Orientation to Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026. On this day\, current MSHS students will have an early dismissal at 10:45 a.m. to allow the MSHS staff to host the Future 9th Grade Orientation. Busing will be provided for our 9-12th grade students immediately following our 10:45 a.m. dismissal. Lunch will not be served to high school students.   \n  \nThe Future 9th Grade Orientation to welcome students from Father Marquette\, Bothwell Middle Schools\, and any other interested current 8th grade students from the area on Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026\, from 10:45 a.m. until 2:05 p.m. at MSHS. SUMMARY:Savvy Caregiver Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration is underway for Savvy Caregiver\, a nationally recognized educational training program for family members caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease\, dementia or memory loss and are living at home. \nSavvy Caregiver is designed to give caregivers relevant knowledge\, skills\, and mastery to support the person living with dementia and to take care of themselves. Topics include information about Alzheimer’s and related dementias\, the role of confusion and its effects on behavior\, the stages of dementia\, and how to keep the person engaged and involved in daily activities. Decision making for difficult issues caregivers often face and caregiver self-care exercises are also highlighted. Savvy Caregiver participants report increased confidence and ability to manage their caregiving\, as well as lower depression and burden. \nThe workshop has 6 weekly sessions\, each lasting 2 hours\, and will be held on Thursdays\, January 15 – February 19\, 2026 from 1:30 – 3:30 pm Eastern\, via Zoom. \nSavvy Caregiver is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP). There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited. DESCRIPTION:Learn life-saving skills at free QPR and Narcan Trainings in Hancock on January 22 and 29\n  \nCopper Shores Community Health Foundation and Keweenaw Support 4 Healthy Minds are hosting free QPR and Narcan trainings\, on Thursday\, January 22 at 11 a.m. and Thursday\, January 29 at 6 p.m. Both trainings take place at the Copper Shores office on 821 Water Street in Hancock. QPR Training takes about an hour to complete\, with an optional 30-minute Narcan Training to follow. \n  \nAll community members from Houghton\, Keweenaw\, Baraga and Ontonagon counties are invited to attend. Both trainings are tailored for laypersons\, including but not limited to businesses\, educators\, faith groups\, healthcare professionals\, parents and caregivers. \n  \nQPR Training is focused on suicide prevention. QPR stands for Question\, Persuade\, Refer; three simple steps that anyone can learn to save a life. Those who take training learn to spot the warning signs of a suicide crisis\, including expressions of hopelessness\, depression\, giving away prized possessions\, talking about suicide and securing lethal means\, and then taught how to respond. \n  \nNarcan Training teaches individuals how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and how to administer the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone. Those who take Narcan Training will learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose\, how to carry and administer the opioid overdose reversal drug Naloxone\, and better understand the role of harm reduction in the overall opioid public health crisis. \nRegistration is available at coppershores.org. Limited space is available. Registration closes on Tuesday\, January 20 at noon for the January 22 session\, and on Tuesday\, January 27 at noon for the January 29 session.
