DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 4 — Color Run & Fall Festival \n  \nThe Keweenaw Color Run returns at 9:30 a.m. with a family-friendly\, untimed 5K through downtown Houghton. Participants are showered with colorful powders along the course and receive their own color packet at the start. The run is open to all ages — no times\, no winners\, just fun. \n\nRight after the race\, The City of Houghton’s Fall Fest takes over Houghton’s waterfront pier from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can enjoy tractor rides\, cider pressing (including bring-your-own apples)\, pumpkin sales\, kids’ games like bowling on the pier\, and cozy fall photo ops. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 3 — Brew Street & Plaidurday \n  \nBrew Street kicks off at 6 p.m. on Lakeshore Drive behind the Keweenaw Brewing Company (KBC). Guests can enjoy cold pours from KBC\, food trucks\, and live music from Toni Saari\, The Make Believe Spurs\, and Bob Hiltunen. Social district cups will be available\, with $1 from each sale donated to the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw to preserve local history. \n\nAt 7 p.m.\, Brew Street also hosts this year’s official Plaidurday group photo\, moving the tradition downtown for the first time. Visitors are encouraged to don their flannel and join the record-setting photo\, a Keweenaw tradition since 2023. Visit Keweenaw knows it holds the world record from Plaidurday in 2023 for the most people together wearing plaid\, even though the record book wouldn’t recognize it. Now\, we’re focused on bringing the fun experience downtown and enhancing the evening lineup! Expect delicious\, local food trucks and cold pours from the KBC! \n\nLakeshore Drive will be closed between Suomi Restaurant and the KBC parking lot entrance to allow space for the event. Admission is free; beverages are available for purchase by those 21+ inside at the KBC bar. \n\nThe Carnegie Museum will have a Brew Street exhibit on display through the event for folks to learn more about Houghton’s historic roots in brewing beer!

The closure may extend through Oct. 10 if additional time is needed to complete the work.\n\nThe Sand Point Marsh Trail\, Sand Point Beach\, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Headquarters will be inaccessible via Sand Point Road during this time. This closure will not impact access to Munising Memorial Hospital\, the Munising Falls Visitor Center\, or private residences on Sand Point Road. See map for exact location of closure.\n\nAlternate parking for backpackers planning to park on Sand Point during this closure is at Munising Falls Visitor Center. SUMMARY:NMU Presents 'Into the Woods' Musical
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will present Into the Woods\, a fantasy musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine\, Sept 25-27 and Oct 2-4. This “darkly enchanting” production blends familiar fairy tale characters with profound themes of desire\, consequence and hope. \n“Into the Woods begins with characters everyone recognizes\, like Cinderella\, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood\, but Act II gets\, as most Sondheim pieces do\, much more mature and more personal\,” said director Paul Truckey. “Everybody goes into the woods at some point in their life\, and this show explores what happens when you do.” \nAlong with its emotional resonance\, Into the Woods delivers plenty of comedy. The pompous\, over-the-top princes are audience favorites\, and the intertwining plotlines keep the action fast-paced and surprising. Truckey said the show begins with a wish and ends with a wish\, reminding audiences of both the optimism and the risks that come with chasing dreams. He explained that this shift is what makes the piece so powerful. \n“The first act shows characters who are almost one-dimensional in their goals; they want something\, and they go after it\,” he said. “But the second act transforms them into three-dimensional figures. We see them wrestle with grief\, responsibility and how to move forward when life doesn’t turn out the way they imagined.” \nMore than three decades after its Broadway debut\, Into the Woods remains timely. Its message about community\, resilience and facing the unknown strikes a chord with modern audiences navigating their own challenges. The blend of humor\, tragedy and hope ensures that the story speaks to all ages\, offering both entertainment and reflection. \nThis production also highlights the strength and growth of NMU Theatre and Dance. The department welcomed 60 new freshmen this fall\, its largest incoming class to date\, which is a testament to its continued success and reputation. \n“The cast is full of seniors down to freshmen\,” said Truckey. “They have fabulous voices and are great actors; just incredible to work with all around. We’re doing incredible things here at the Forest Roberts Theatre. All the shows we put on are just terrific every year\, and we’re doing more of them. The quality of kids that we’re getting now in the BFA programs is just amazing\, and our audience support has always been absolutely tremendous.” \nShowtimes are 7:30 p.m.\, with a 1 p.m. sensory-friendly Theatre For All matinee Saturday\, Sept 27\, and an additional 1 p.m. regular matinee on Oct 4. It also provides Michigan taxpayers a state income tax deduction on contributions and potential tax-free growth on any earnings if account proceeds are used to pay for qualified higher education expenses. MESP can be used at any eligible college\, university or trade school in the nation and some abroad.
