SUMMARY:Festival Of The Angry Bear Returns
DESCRIPTION:MARQUETTE – The “big bear” of Upper Peninsula festivals returns for its twelfth year after taking a brief hiatus in 2025 due to the opening of The Trestle Building. Ore Dock Brewing Company’s Festival of the Angry Bear is a spirited and much anticipated street festival that has become an annual spring tradition in downtown Marquette. Since its founding in 2014\, the festival has evolved into a weekend long celebration as thousands of enthusiastic (and often fur-clad) celebrators gather to “wake the bear” and shed their winter fur in downtown Marquette. \n“After taking 2025 off so we could focus on our expansion and the opening of The Trestle\, we are beyond excited to bring the bear out of hibernation\,” says Curated Events Manager\, Amanda Courchaine. “We could not do this without the support of our staff\, neighbors\, volunteers and all the folks who travel down the street or miles and miles to be a part of this.” \nThe 100-block of Spring St. will close Friday\, April 10\, and begin its transformation\, emerging a mere 24-hours later with a city block’s worth of live music\, food trucks\, games\, costumes\, and a plethora of kegs. The festival plays host to the annual unveiling of Ore Dock’s barrel-aged and limited release offerings with over 30 taps of Lake Superior sourced craft beer\, cocktail-inspired hard seltzers\, a variety of non-alcoholic craft beverages and new this year draft cocktails. Thirsty bears gotta eat too\, and festival goers will have no trouble finding tasty eats from a bounty of local food vendors. \nNew for 2026\, 3 music stages will be featured. Headlining the festival stage will be the Pajamas to cap off an eclectic Midwest lineup including The 4onthefloor (Minneapolis\, MN)\, Wrestle with Jimmy (Grand Rapids)\, and The Bootstrap Boys (Grand Rapids). Steve Leaf (Grand Rapids) and Marquette’s favorite surf rock band\, Ramble Tamble\, will be rocking the Community Space stage. The Trestle Biergarten will be vibing throughout the festival featuring Synergy with local DJ’s Mayple & Conway. \nThere will also be a multitude of events and collaborations leading up to the festival including: \nthe inaugural Angry Bear Pre-Pawty (4/3/26) where you can get everything needed to hit the fast-pass line on festival day.  \nSamara Floral Co.’s Flower Crown workshop (4/9/26)\,  \nRise of the Baby Bear with the U.P. Children’s Museum (4/10/26)\,  \nand the third running of Queen City’s Run 4 Your Life 5k (4/11/26) with proceeds to support the Special Olympics of Michigan Area 36. Additional festival events include a costume contest and dance-off hosted by Marquette Fringe\, a beer relay and growler holding competition with Queen City Running Co\, and keg bowling with The Fire Station. \nThe festival is 21+ and festival goers will need to purchase a $10 official Angry Bear wristband to enter. Angry Bear will happen rain\, snow\, or shine. SUMMARY:PSA - Powerful Tools for Caregivers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Tools for Caregivers\, a six-week online workshop\, designed for the non-professional\, informal family caregiver\, will be held on Thursdays\, March 19 through April 23\, from 1:30 – 3:00 pm (Eastern) via Zoom. \nResearch studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition\, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health. The Powerful Tools for Caregivers program will provide caregivers tools to help reduce stress and increase relaxation\, make tough decisions\, reduce guilt\, anger and depression\, communicate effectively\, set goals and problem solve\, and take better care of themselves while caring for a relative or friend. Caregivers will benefit from the workshop whether they are helping a parent\, spouse\, or friend living at home\, in long-term care or across the country. The workshop focuses on self-care for the caregiver\, not on specific diseases or hands-on caregiving. \nPowerful Tools for Caregivers is offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) in partnership with Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. There is no charge for this workshop\, but registration is required. Class size is limited. Registration ends when the class is full or on March 2. \nTo register\, visit www.upcap.org (click on Events) or call 2-1-1 Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for assistance.

SUMMARY:Veterans Hockey Game Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Veterans Hockey Game at Dee Stadium to Raise Funds for Tunnel to Towers and Strengthen Community Support Across the Upper Peninsula\n\nThe Michigan Upper Peninsula Veterans Hockey Club will return to Dee Stadium on April 18 at 7:00 p.m. for its annual game against the Minnesota Warriors. This year’s event raises funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation\, which provides direct housing and financial support to Gold Star families\, injured veterans\, and first responders facing serious hardship. The foundation is known for keeping administrative costs low and ensuring donations reach the people who need them most. Admission is five dollars\, with free entry for military\, first responders\, and children twelve and under.\n\nThe team’s story began with a simple question about whether the Upper Peninsula had enough veterans who played hockey to form a team. In a region where hockey is woven into daily life and generations have grown up on the ice\, the answer came quickly. That team now has a roster of more than forty veterans from across the region. Many had stepped away from organized hockey years ago\, but the chance to reconnect with fellow veterans and return to a sport that has always been part of this community brought them back to the ice. What started as a friendly challenge has become a steady\, community‑rooted program that continues to grow.\n\nPlayers often talk about how the team gives them a place where they feel grounded and understood. The locker room offers a sense of belonging that can be difficult to find after military service. Practices and games give them structure\, purpose\, and a shared mission. The team’s commitment to raising money for others adds meaning to every event\, and that mission‑driven approach has become a defining part of who they are.\n\nThe impact of the team reaches well beyond the rink. Their games have raised funds for the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans\, the Copper Country Veterans Association\, youth hockey programs\, and adaptive recreation efforts. Their partnership with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation connects local fundraising to a national network of support for veterans and first responders.\n\nOne of the most visible outcomes of their efforts is the expansion of adaptive skating access at Dee Stadium. Support from past events has helped strengthen the sled hockey program managed by Equipment Loans of the Keweenaw. These sleds are available for ongoing community use\, and families from surrounding towns regularly travel to Houghton to participate. The Dee has become a regional hub for inclusive recreation\, and the veterans have played a meaningful role in making that possible.\n\nThe team continues to be lifted by strong community support. Keweenaw Waters Resort has generously provided free lodging for visiting players\, helping make the event possible for teams traveling long distances. Level UP Apparel has contributed custom shirts\, hoodies\, jackets\, and hats\, with proceeds supporting the fundraising effort. Players often talk about how the community’s spirit shows up in countless ways: from home‑cooked food and Keweenaw Brewing Company beer to open doors and warm welcomes. That sense of local pride and generosity has become a defining part of the event\, and a reminder of how deeply this region stands behind its veterans.\n\nThere are several ways for community members to learn more or donate. The team maintains an active Facebook page where updates\, photos\, and event details are posted. A Facebook event page for the April 18 game will also include information\, along with a direct donation link and a QR code for ease. Posters around town will feature the same QR code for quick access. The team has set a fundraising goal of $10\,000 this year\, and a silent auction at the event will help support that effort. Anyone with questions about donations or the program can contact John French directly at jfrench@up.net.\n\nEvent information:\nApril 18\, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.\nDee Stadium\, Houghton\n$5 admission\nFree for military\, first responders\, and children twelve and under
