About Art on the Rocks
On September 25th, 1951, a group of artists met at the Hotel Northland (now the Landmark Hotel) in Marquette to plan and discuss the idea of forming an arts and crafts association called the Lake Superior Creative Arts Association, later to become Lake Superior Art Association in Marquette, Michigan celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
Art on the Rocks began in 1959 when 35 artists exhibited their work on the rocky hillside site of the Father Marquette statue in Marquette, Michigan. It was an open show chaired by Anita E. Meyland who coined the title, “Art on the Rocks.”
Over sixty years later, the tradition of Art on the Rocks, one of the oldest art fairs in the state, continues with annual fairs held during the last full weekend each July. The event has become synonymous with the beautiful Upper Peninsula summer season, and every year the Lake Superior Art Association looks forward to inviting over 100 artists from around the country, representing a wide variety of artistic media, to our beloved shore.
