Swimming Suffragettes: The Evolution & Revolution in Women’s Bathing Suits.

April 22 @ 5:30 pm

A beachside atmosphere will fill the Marquette Regional History Center on April 22, 2026, as the Marquette County League of Women Voters hosts its spring fundraiser: “Swimming Suffragettes: The Evolution and Revolution in Women’s Bathing Suits.” Carrie Moon-Dupree, Director of Development for the Michigan League, has been a longtime collector of vintage women’s swimsuits and has observed that their evolution parallels the progress of women’s rights. Tasty finger foods and luscious drinks will welcome guests at 5:30 p.m., and displays of the History Center’s vintage suits, along with photos of League members’ relatives in suits from their time, will entertain everyone until the presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. Members of the NMU Women’s Swim Team will help showcase the vintage suit collection as Moon-Dupree shares the lively story of how they relate to women’s evolving civil rights. Afterwards, Heidi Voigt, the coach of the NMU Women’s Swim Team, will demonstrate how women’s competitive swimwear has changed over the years as women’s participation in the sport has increased. There will be time for questions for both speakers, followed by some socializing over food and drinks.

Tickets are now available for purchase at the Marquette Regional History Center office and online at www.marquettehistory.org/things-to-do for $45 for adults, with free entry for young children. Tickets purchased at the door will be $50.
