Find your walking shoes and lace up those sneakers.
The 19th Annual Great Lakes Recovery Centers Run For Recovery is just around the corner. The Run/Walk, proudly presented by TruNorth Federal Credit Union, will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, in the back entrance of the Superior Dome in Marquette, with the course traversing north toward Presque Isle.
The annual event coincides with National Recovery Month in September.
All net proceeds will benefit Great Lakes Recovery Centers’ Compassionate Care Fund. Through the Compassionate Care Fund, individuals can access GLRC’s services and receive much-needed services, regardless of ability to pay. This is beneficial for clients who may be uninsured, under insured, or are not eligible for governmental or community funding. Individuals receiving assistance from the Compassionate Care Fund may be from anywhere in the Upper Peninsula. Although many clients receiving funds through the Compassionate Care Fund are receiving residential treatment, the fund can be used for GLRC’s other services, including outpatient counseling and recovery housing. Last year, the event raised more than $25,000 and 89 clients from across the Upper Peninsula utilized the fund to receive much-needed treatment.
Greg Toutant, chief executive officer of GLRC, said the walk/run has grown in popularity over the years.
“We see this as a wonderful way to get outside, enjoy the beautiful summer and early fall weather and raise money for a fund that has helped hundreds of our clients over the years,” Toutant said. “We encourage people to sign up to either run or walk and be part of something special.”
Jim LaJoie is the chief development officer for GLRC. He said the organization has kept the price affordable for community residents and GLRC supporters to participate.
“The cost to enter is $35, and all participants will receive a T-shirt and a goodie bag filled with a number of items,” LaJoie said. “Last year, more than 100 people registered for the event, and we’re aiming to exceed that number this year. This event is successful thanks to the incredible support of many sponsors across the region.”
Dr. Mike Grossman and his wife, Helen, have been chosen to be honorary captains for this year’s event. Dr. Grossman, current medical director for GLRC, has worked for GLRC for decades, providing invaluable substance use disorder (SUD) and physical health treatment.
Businesses and sponsors are also encouraged to participate and form teams. Discounts for teams of four and more are available.
