Environmental Action Week at Northern Michigan University will take place starting Wednesday, Sept. 17, with the university hosting various events to highlight the role of activism and advocacy as it relates to the environment, climate and sustainability.  The events taking place for Environmental Action Week are as follows:   Wednesday, Sept. 17 “Deuda Natal” Poetry Reading, 6-7:30 p.m. in 2315 John X. Jamrich Hall. Puerto Rican poet Mara Pastor will read excerpts from her award-winning poetry book, “Deuda Natal,” which features environmental themes.  Thursday, Sept. 18 Poetry and Environment Workshop with poet Mara Pastor, 6:30-8 p.m. in 2315 John X.

The Finlandia Art Gallery and Finlandia Foundation National (FFN) are pleased to present Northern Tier, an exhibition of oil paintings by Finnish American artist Eric Aho. The exhibit will be on display from September 18 to November 13, 2025, at the Finlandia Art Gallery, located in the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock.  A reception for the artist will take place on Thursday, October 9, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., with an artist talk beginning at 7:20 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will open a new exhibition titled “Gales of November: Shipwrecks on Lake Superior” at noon on Friday, Sept. 19, in its gallery in Gries Hall. From the earliest days of sailing vessels on Lake Superior, November has taken its toll on the maritime trade. ‘Murmurations’ Exhibit at NMU’s DeVos Art Museum

Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum is hosting an exhibition titled “Murmurations” through Nov. 1, with related events throughout September. The exhibit features a diverse collection of works by 30 artists, who all participated in Nido (Italian for “nest”), an artist residency located in the small town of Monte Castello di Vibio, nestled within the central hills of Italy. This residency program, facilitated by the Poor Farm Project in Little Wolf, Wis., allowed artists to explore the social and historical landscape, land resources, and embedded narratives of Monte Castello di Vibio and the surrounding region.
