Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw Counties – The Copper Country Great Start Parent Coalition   The Copper Country Great Start Collaborative is gearing up for our annual diaper drive to help provide essential items like diapers and wipes for families in our community. Each year, the Family Coalition collects new unopened packages of diapers and wipes for the Keweenaw Family Resource Center’s (KFRC) Baby Closet. These diapers are given away to families in need throughout the year at no charge.  Last year 150 families utilized the Baby Closet and received:   829 packages of diapers and wipes 16 pack-n-plays to provide safe sleep environments 33

Our January Annual Meeting & Elections will be held at 7:00pm, (Eastern Time), in person at the Stannard Township Hall on 1/06/2025. For virtual attendance, we now have ZOOM available, along with the strictly audio/phone method. If you would like to attend virtually, please email me at this address and I will get you the connection information. Wednesday 8 January 2025 is the monthly meeting of Alfred Erickson Post 186 of the American Legion Hancock.  Social hour 6 PM , 7pm meeting.  Our annual booya lunch will be served after meeting and roll call of the members. Members, and prospective veteran members are invited. This is a change from the usual meeting night of the first Wednesday of the month. Domestic Violence & Local Businesses –Lunch & Learn Event   Baraga County Shelter Home will be the guest presenter at an upcoming Lunch & Learn event on Wednesday, January 15th, hosted by the Baraga County Chamber. Celeste Hendrickson, Executive Director of the Shelter Home, will be sharing information about how local businesses are affected by domestic violence in some surprising ways.  “Unfortunately, society considers the topic of domestic violence as a ‘family matter’ when in fact it is a societal issue that affects local businesses every day in major ways” shares Hendrickson. A People’s March will take place on Saturday, January 18, at 1 p.m. to celebrate our US Constitution and Bill of Rights. In Washington, D.C. and across our country, people will be marching to show support for our democracy. Come march with us! We will gather at Bridgeview Park in Houghton to hear introductory remarks, then walk to the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, carrying flags and signs related to Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Assembly, Separation of Powers, and more. LWV signs and attire are okay. (For visibility, signage with letters at least 5 inches in size

The event: Jam Service Winter Carnival Saturday January 18th 2025 from 2pm-7pm across the road from the JAM SERVICE IN LAKE LINDEN in the old carnival grounds. Open to all the public and there is no charge for the event. There will be the following: – sledding hill – snowmobile rides – hot chocolate – hot dogs and other snacks – bonfire – hangout and have a good time Vendors of any sort are welcome. Jam Service  just asks that they contact them just to ensure they have enough room opened up and it is free for them (vendors)  as well.

The Nature Prayer Services are opportunities to connect with God, nature, and each other in a relaxed setting. Each service has a leader who will guide the service with prayers, readings, and reflection. Everyone is welcome, no religious affiliation is necessary.
