Houghton’s waterfront will come alive on Saturday, May 23 from 12 to 4 PM as the Locavore Festival returns to the Pier! Locavore celebrates the creativity, flavor, and talent of the Keweenaw. Nearly sixty vendors will line the waterfront with handmade goods, farm fresh products, small batch foods, and community organizations. This is all set to live music from Toni Saari and Matt Bradley. This year’s artist and maker lineup brings an especially vibrant mix of styles and specialties. Shoppers will find handmade clothing from Topaz’s Trinkets, UP inspired wood inlay pieces from Cedar Lake Workshop, and paintings and prints

Finno-Ugric committee to host information session   What exactly is Finno-Ugric? Why is Hancock so steeped in that culture? And how can I get more involved? SAFE @ HOME   Designed to prepare students to be safe when they are home alone.  Students learn how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies.  Students also learn a system to help them assess and respond to injuries and illnesses.   Tuesday, June 9 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm KBIC Health System-Upstairs Conference Room, 102 Superior Avenue, Baraga   REGISTRATION INFORMATION:  Class is FREE of charge.  Seats limited, registration required!  Call Ashley at 906-353-4540 with any questions.

Safe Sitter   Designed to prepare students to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting.   The instructor-led class is filled with fun games and role-playing exercises.  Students even get to use manikins to practice rescue skills like choking rescue!   Thursday, June 11 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm Zeba Hall, 16141 Zeba Road, L’Anse   REGISTRATION INFORMATION:  Class fee is FREE.  Seats limited, registration is required!  Student must bring a lunch and a water bottle.  For more information, call 906-353-4540.

Copper Range Historical Museum in South Range is holding its Annual Open House on Saturday, May 30, from noon-3:00.  Special presentation will include a display by Lucy Granroth of Copper Thread Genealogy & Research.  Refreshments available.  The museum will open for the season on Tuesday, June 2, from noon-3:00.

The June meeting of the Houghton-Keweenaw Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) will be held on Monday, June 1st at Slims in Mohawk.  The business meeting will begin at 12:30 pm, followed by a family style dinner.  The guest speaker is Ethan Deshestsky from Erickson Crawle Funeral Home who will speak on  funeral preplanning.  All members are encouraged to attend.
