Northern Michigan University’s DeVos Art Museum is hosting an exhibition titled “Murmurations” through Nov. 1, with related events throughout September. The exhibit features a diverse collection of works by 30 artists, who all participated in Nido (Italian for “nest”), an artist residency located in the small town of Monte Castello di Vibio, nestled within the central hills of Italy. This residency program, facilitated by the Poor Farm Project in Little Wolf, Wis., allowed artists to explore the social and historical landscape, land resources, and embedded narratives of Monte Castello di Vibio and the surrounding region. Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will present Into the Woods, a fantasy musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Sept 25-27 and Oct 2-4. This “darkly enchanting” production blends familiar fairy tale characters with profound themes of desire, consequence and hope. “Into the Woods begins with characters everyone recognizes, like Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood, but Act II gets, as most Sondheim pieces do, much more mature and more personal,” said director Paul Truckey. “Everybody goes into the woods at some point in their life, and this show explores what happens when you do.”

Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week workshop, designed for the non-professional, informal family caregiver, will be held on Thursdays, August 21 – September 25th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Negaunee Senior Center, 410 Jackson Street, Negaunee. Research studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health.
