Eagle Mine to offer Free Public Tours of Facilities CHAMPION, Mich., April 22, 2025—A series of public tours of Eagle Mine facilities will be offered during the summer. Tour locations will alternate between the Eagle Mine in Big Bay and the Humboldt Mill in Champion on Thursdays from July to September. The Houghton High School Alumni Association will hold a Pancake & Sausage breakfast, on Saturday August 2nd, 2025, serving 8:30am – 11:30am, featuring Vollwerth’s sausage, traditional and blueberry pancakes, and Shelby’s Finnish pancakes, w fruit, and beverages, adults $10, reduced pricing for youth at the door. The Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club will be hosting its 49th Annual Gem and Mineral Show on Saturday, August 2 at the Ishpeming Elks Lodge. Join us for a group hike on Saturday, August 2nd! Come hike with us through a beautiful hardwood forest and along an old logging road to a tall pine path on the south side of the Little Garlic River. The hike begins at the parking lot across from Echo Lake Road on CR550. (Note: we will initially meet at the Elliott Donnelly Trailhead to spot some vehicles.) A short walk up the road brings us to the NCT. After a brief hike up the ridge we will find ourselves on a level logging road. This hike is totally devoid of rocks.

Northern Michigan University will host its first BIPOC Outdoors Summit & Rest Retreat Aug. 4-8. While the events are centered on promoting joyful and inclusive nature-based experiences for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) through outdoor activities, skills workshops, keynote speakers and conversations, all are welcome to participate. August is just around the corner, which means last minute logistics are underway for the 26th Annual Honor Credit Union Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic to be held on Saturday, August 9. Last year’s race was a huge success, thanks in part to all of the volunteers who so generously gave their time and talents to a wonderful community event. If there is any way you could help us get some last minute volunteers we would be so grateful! Below are some examples of what we need volunteers for. Help us to continue this tradition of outstanding community involvement. On August 9th, the 26th Annual Ore to Shore Mountain Bike Epic in Marquette County, Michigan makes its return! As the state’s largest point-to-point, mass start mountain bike race, this exciting event draws thousands of riders and spectators to the area. From rugged trails to incredible views, it’s an unforgettable day of outdoor adventure. Courtney Lake Horse Camp and Ride August 9, 2025 ride with MI-TRALE equestrians members on the beautiful Courtney Lake Trails and Campground. The 14 miles of mostly sandy trails takes you through a diverse forest landscape, around and near two lakes and across the Firesteel River. Six of the 21 campsites are set up for horses with corrals. Marquette County Habitat for Humanity is proud to host its annual Women Build event from Thursday, August 14 through Saturday, August 16, 2025. This empowering event promotes gender equity and inclusion in construction and other skilled trades, and this year embraces the theme: “Moving Forward Together: Women Educating and Inspiring Generations.” Women Build provides an opportunity for individuals to come together to learn new skills, build confidence, and support safe, affordable housing for families in need. All genders and gender expressions are welcome—no prior construction experience is required. Food distribution will begin at 10:00am and continue while supplies last or until 11:30am. Food will be available for approximately 550 families. The Downtown Marquette Farmers Market will be turning the 100 block of W. Washington St. into a festive Night Market where you will find over 60 vendors gathered to exhibit their locally grown, collected, and crafted products. Stop by every Wednesday night from 5 pm – 8 pm to enjoy local farmers, bakers, artisans, musicians, and more! The regular monthly meeting of the Marquette County Board of Health will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 6:00 pm. The meeting will take place in Room 231 of the Henry A. Join historian and author Jim Paquette on a visit to the camp sites of Negaunee’s very first miners, the ancient people who once quarried the local Ajibik quartzite deposits on the northeast end of the lake thousands of years ago. We will follow the timeworn footpath along the north lakeshore. It will be approximately a two-mile hike on uneven terrain and hills and is considered a moderate to difficult hike. Pre-registration is required. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at www.marquettehistory.org $15.00 per person. Only 40 tickets are available for this event. Participants will meet at the Negaunee Lakeview We end our season where all great stories begin: in the space between what is real and what we dare to dream. Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week workshop, designed for the non-professional, informal family caregiver, will be held on Thursdays, August 21 – September 25th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Negaunee Senior Center, 410 Jackson Street, Negaunee. Research studies find high rates of depression and anxiety among caregivers and increased vulnerability to health problems. Caregivers frequently cite restriction of personal activities and social life as problems. In addition, caregivers often feel a lack of control over events and a sense of powerlessness which can have a significant negative impact on their physical and emotional health.
